Was RDB an Aamir starrer or an Ensemble film?

Rang De Basanti!
Aamir was the only star in the film...the rest were character artists (won't count Siddharth here...it was his debut and he is a star in South) / lesser known stars.
While the film was promoted as an Aamir starrer, when it released, it gained attention for all the actors in it...right down to Atul Kulkarni and even Madhavan, who had a cameo in the film!
Though Aamir had a prominent role, almost every other actor in their film had their share of limelight too...especially Siddharth, who garnered a lot of praise for his character and the way he enacted it!
So what do you guys feel about RDB? Did it work because of Aamir's presence or because of the entire star-cast and hence, should be called a typical Ensemble cast film!
What other films like this come to your mind, which can be categorized as an ensemble cast film?

Same case scenario with 3I too, no? That movie was what it was because of all three characters of Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman. Come to think of it, even Lagaan wouldn't have been so memorable without the whole ensemble cast. Hmmm. Aamir seems to blossom with more characters by his side than going solo.. like the Dabangg Khan.

Even Raajneeti...though Ranbir was the main star in it...I think it worked because of the entire star-cast...Arjun (he was fantastic in the film!), Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgun, Manoj Bajpai and Katrina!
Yes...3 Idiots is a good example of ensemble casting...all the three of them had almost equal footage and role!

DCH,RDB,3I...shows Aamir isn't insecure about his co-stars.He gave his best in such films...

Edit-It got posted before I could finish!
RDB maybe termed as ensemble but it was his name mainly which grabbed eyeballs.Though the film worked, cast was praised but for me the film was weird.Too much was happening in it! But 3I was out an out Aamir film, yes Sharman,Madhvan were good too but these 2 can't bring ppl to theaters.Rancho was soul of the movie & Aamir undoubtedly the hero of the film.

RDB was an ensemble cast film in every way. All the characters were well fleshed out, had equal screen space, everyone's tracks were dealt properly. In fact, Siddharth, Soha, Madhavan and the narrator had slightly more important roles, IMO, their roles seemed to contribute more to the story than Aamir's. Aamir's character didn't sideline everybody. I remember when I came out of the theatre I wondered if it should be Siddharth who should be called the leading man, rather than Aamir!
But yes, it was promoted as an Aamir Khan film more than an ensemble cast film (even the poster showcased him prominently with very little of others) and it was good in a way cos that was what attracted the audience to go to the theatres and the media to give it importance and hype. Later on the WOM grew bcos the film was good and made the film a bigger hit.

There are quiet a few films that worked DESPITE Aamir's presence in a role which didnt suit him. RDB is one of them. 😆

@bold: I don't think I agree with this. Rancho was out and out shown as the 'hero' in the story in every way. He had the heroine, he got more songs, he solved everyone's problems, he messed with the villain, he preached about the message of the movie, he was the 'right' one all the time, he was the one who ruled the climax. This clearly made him come out as the lead of the movie and the others to come out as supporting actors in the narrative. They may have got equal footage, but it was still not the same as DCH or KPC or RDBwhere all the leads actually got almost equal importance.

While the film worked bcos of everyone involved and wouldn't have been the same even if one of them hadn't been there, but.. I don't know, 3 idiots doesn't come out as a proper ensemble cast story.

RDB was an ensemble film it had other male strong characters who had equal screenspace as Aamir. Siddharth's character,Kunal, Sharman and also atul kulkarni had their own stories linked to the main story.
