Are TV stars working to death?

TV stars have the most punishing schedules in entertainment. What used to be said of Bollywood actors like Govinda in the 80s -- double shifts and no holidays -- is now applicable for a huge army of actors and production people, who work around the clock without even a weekly off to churn out the serials that populate television.

Shifts can be 15 hours long and sometimes go on for 20 hours. Are the stars being punished for their success and are they ignoring family and health at the cost of stardom? We ask them.

Achint Kaur
Mandira of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Nikhila of Karam Apna Apna says:

"I took my first holiday in two months today! There are phases when work gets very hectic, but usually I work in 12 hour shifts from 9 to 9 or 7 to 7. And I take Sundays off,
but now for the next three months I'm going to be very busy with no offs whatsoever. After that it will be back to my normal routine.

"It doesn't get unbearable as we have proper breaks for food and all. We go on the sets and have breakfast. We also get our lunch break and evening break. I usually take my own food to the sets and the whole crew gets together and eats.

"My last real long holiday was two and a half years ago when I was planning on starting my salon. I was on holiday for eight months! I'm not an out door person so when I get home, which is about 9:30, I catch up with my family and friends. They come over or I go to someone's house and we sit down yapping.

I get into bed by 11:30. By 12 o'clock I'm out! I wake up usually at 7:30 because my body clock is tuned to getting up regularly at that time. I think it depends from person to person but generally TV actors have more stressful lives than film actors. I'm in the middle of three
projects right now so it's very busy. I guess if you're a film actor and you have many films to do it is the same."

Gitanjali Tikekar
Aparna of Kasauti Zindagi Kay and Maya of Karam Apna Apna (Gitanjali Tikekar) says her last holiday was four days off in December:

"Everyday I wake up at 7 and do stuff around the house till I leave for my shoot, reaching the sets at 9 sharp. I carry my food which includes dal-rice and roti-sabji. In these 5 years it has become natural for me to manage my schedules on such a tight program.

"My last holiday was in December, and lasted four days. That time the entire unit was on holiday for New Year so we had built a bank of episodes allowing us with a little free time. I'm planning to take an off again this month, but I'll have to speak to my production house.

I work 14 hours every day and reach home at 10. Dinner is generally very light and vegetarian. I work out a couple of times a week, depending on my schedules."

"Most of my friends are in entertainment, so they understand me well and also the fact that if one wants to continue with this profession one has to sacrifice, so I don't have any regrets. Whenever I want to meet a friend I asked them to visit my home so that I can spend time with my family as well as with my friends."

Yash Tonk
Shiv of Karam Apna Apna Yash Tonk says:

"There is much fluctuation in my schedule. Sometimes work begins at 7 AM, other times at 9 AM or 2 PM, and then going on to 6 PM or till 10 PM. One thing I manage to pack into my day is my exercise, even if I get only 15 minutes of time. Participating in Nach Baliye 2 was a big time break for me and now I have very little time off. We get a lunch break of 45 minutes
during which I have my packed lunch, which includes dal, roti and chicken. We don't get a weekly off and I work for seven days.

"If I finish my shooting at 10 PM then me and my wife go out to dinner with a friend. I'm working for my family, so that they will get money. I don't believe in stress, stress is the product of thinking too much about stress! I go to bed only at 2.30 AM even if finish my shooting at 10."
