Something tells me that Vishwa will have a important role in Shyamas life. She listen to him. Their relationship is something Shyama doesn't have control over. How come Vishwa never saw this relationship in different light?
So she choose Arnav/Arjun was it because he made a impact on her or others to fail to do so? There is something about Arnav which is reminding her of Vishwa, right?

I never had any chance to read the Mahabharatam so this will be confusing for me I must say but I am ready for the ride!

Correct me if I am wrong, you said eternally in love with Krishna in your comment, it need not be the romantic love, right? Her bhakthi (devotion) to Krishna is well known, not the praying ardently kind, but valuing his words and accepting his wisdom.

So she would always be in love with someone she holds in such esteem. This love is between a devotee and her god, as I see it.

Her love for Karna, I am not too confident on that matter to comment but the jambul episode in the presence of Krishna shows, she did harbour feelings for Karna

you can see mahabharat all over again cant ya in modern times
well hope not too much like that though
khushi am afraid they might have cottoned onto the fact
what was that all about i wonder between the cousins

That is indeed right, however that is not how it starts, in my opinion. She eventually realizes the nature of her love for Krisha, but during her childhood days, she fancies him just as every maiden fancies the supreme man of Aryavart.

As for the Jambul story, I believe its a folk tale, but I haven't seen it as part of the original version, but given the creative freedom, we can have our own version here.

Read my other post on how Draupadi's love for Krishna is realized. Posted here. This is only my interpretation, but others will beg to differ.

For now, there is no one recommendation if you want to cover the Mahabharata. As for my own research, I read Yajnaseni by Pratibha Ray and is quite close to the original by Vyasa Dwaipayana. Even then, I'm finding some deviations as Yajnaseni is just another fiction. For ex: In Yajnaseni, Dhristadumma is the one who calls out Karna as the Suta putra, but in the original its Krsna herself who does it. There will always be tales from the Mahabharat, but the real story is far from this fiction.

The love between Krsna and Arjun too is one, for in the original version, Arjun is more drawn to Subhadra, Krishna's sister. That said, his one true wife was always Krsna and his strength from which he fueled his vengeance. If that is true, then it does not make sense for me to write this story, but again, this is another tale spun off the great epic - just like the others. :)
