Things differ within the divisions of Islam. Sunni & Shi'a are the two majors ones. There are more, so I wouldn't be surprised if the said "inconsistencies" occur because of this. Just like there is a concept regarding temporary marriages in Islam called mut'a that people in my circle don't practice/acknowledge.
As for the division that is more abundant, I can't speak for India. However, globally, there the ratio of Shi'a to Sunni is 3:17.
