Renowned for its finely woven cotton textiles, the Tamil Nadu Dresses industry represents a vibrant and flourishing apparel sector. Comprising of silk, muslin and cotton fabrics, the region's textile industry efficiently produces a wide range of contemporary as well as conventional Dress materials.

The world famous Kanchipuram silk is a product of deft imagination and creativity of the craftsmen of Tamil Nadu. The design input of this famed Dress form is inspired from the architectural elegance of various temples of the region.

Chettinad saree is another major Dress fabric of Tamil Nadu that comes in mustard, black and brick red colors. Mostly the rural womenfolk of the region are found wearing this kind of saree.

Clothes made of cotton are yet another significant Dress type of Tamil Nadu. With excellent cotton weaving techniques, the place produces an extensive range of Dhotis with gold bordersalong with other daily wears.

Visha- Shall we can start with Ladies first like always???

Abhi-

The traditional costume for the Tamil Nadu women is saree and blouse In Tamil Nadu, sarees are available in various materials like cotton, chiffon, silk, georgette, crepe silk, organza, Pattola silk, micro silk, etc.

Kanchipuram silk sarees of Tamil Nadu are very famous, and are worn by women on important formal occasions or occasions of celebrations, like wedding. Village ladies wear same Pattu Pudavai in a different style called pin kosavam.

Moreover,In South India, especially Tamil Nadu, coming of age ceremony or rites of passage is celebrated when a girl reaches puberty. She wears a Pavadai Daavani given by her martial grandparents, which is worn during the first part of the ceremony.
And the little girls wear Pattu Pavadai which is made of silk and this is similar to Pavadai Daavani but instead of a oni, they wear a blouse above it like ghagra choli

Viz- Wow,I never knew this. What about the men folk ?

Abhi-

For the men, the traditional costume comprises of Veshti or Lungi as the lower garment, and Angavasthram as the upper garment. Lungi is worn like a sarong. However, nowadays, angavasthram is frequently replaced by a shirt on the top.

For the upper part of the body,a scarf known by its Sanskrit name of 'Angavastram' or -body-cloth' or by the compound expression of 'uramalivesti' or 'wrapper' was sported by the upper classes. This piece was however generally wrapped around the waist ,more or less in the manner observed on the sculptures of Sanchi, Amaravati,by Brahmanic classes when within temple or actually bowing to the deities therein installed

Veshti is usually white or cream in colour, although colourful hues are used for specific religious occasions or sometimes to create more vivid ensembles.White or turmeric-yellow is the prescribed hues to be worn by men at their weddings and upanayanams.

Lungis are sewn into a tube shape like a skirt. They are especially worn in hot regions. There are also cheaper "open" lungis, in identical dimensions but not sewn into a tube shape. They are normally woven from cotton and come in a variety of designs and colors.

Visha-But do these attires have a particular design or style? 😳

Abhi- Yes it does, that is the uniqueness of our attire. The style of wearing and the design is wore according to the work people do.

The Veshti is a simple wrap around the waist and resembles a long skirt and is usually 4 yards long. It will be folded in half up to knees while working. The second style consists of folding around the waist in the middle of the garment and tying the top ends in the front like a belt and tucking the falling left and right ends in the back. It is usually a 8 yards long cloth. This style is popular across south Indian men while working in the fields.

Along with Veshti, the angavastram or thundu (an extra piece of cloth) will be draped depending on its use. Farmers carry it on one shoulder and treat it as a sweat towel. Bridegrooms use it as entire upper garment. It will be folded decoratively around the waist while dancing. South Indian Hindu priests wrap about the waist as the extra layer.

For the ladies,Kanchipuram silk sarees are a very popular choice worn on different occasions like weddings ,get togethers, outings and so on. Sarees in Tamil Nadu generally have lengths of five or six yards. There are also nine-yard sarees, which is used mostly by the Brahmin community of the state, after their marriage.

As for the girls,Pavadai Daavani comprises of a lehenga or Pavadai which is tied around the waist using string and an oni or Daavani, a see through fine cloth usually 2 to 2.5 metre in length which is draped diagonally over a choli (a tight fitting blouse, same as worn for saree) and is usually woven with cotton or silk. This is worn in the first part of the coming of age ceremony,as I mentioned before.

Viz- But what is so special about this ? Why should we go for this attire, why try something new ?

Abhi-

Well Madam, quite often we see that an attire is judged by its gaudy looks and complicated design but here is the place where we stand apart and above other attires.

The main attraction of our attire is its simplicity. It is simple yet elegant, a combination which is not too easily found in all attires of the world. Moreover our attire like Veshti,Lungi,Angavastram etc are best suited for the humid areas of southern India.

Moreover, our textile is made from the best quality raw materials available and that is precisely the reason why our garments are globally renowned for theircomfort and texture.

The design in our clothes reflect an aesthetic mix of tradition and modernismreasoning for their unmatched popularity in national and international markets.

*Viz ,Jenny and Visha have a conference*

Afterwards..

Visha- We have learned quite a lot today and we feel that we are ready for a wardrobe change ,what say girls ?

Viz and Jenny-Hell yeah !!

Abhi- Let me show you what you want ,please come with me .

*After 4 hours three happy and satisfied girls are seen emerging from the showroom*

Abhi- Job well done Gals!!! 😎
