"Swayam, I'm scared."
"Scared? Why should you be scared when I'm right here?"
They were standing on the terrace of a 70 floor high building, the newest and most extravagant building in Mumbai. Swayam had brought Sharon to the 5 star restaurant on the terrace. They were alone, it being a Monday night. The two of them were standing near the edge of the terrace, near the railing
"It's so high up. I don't wanna look down." Sharon said, shutting her eyes and digging her head into Swayam's chest.
Swayam looked down at Sharon's curls nestling into his shirt and smiled lovingly. He held her hands and slowly turned her around to face the city and its views. Sharon still had her eyes closed adamantly.
Swayam encompassed her in his arms and brought his face closed to hers. He gently whispered into her ears. "I'll protect you. Always"
Sharon opened her eyes and looked at him and smiled. He brought his lips close to her face and gently kissed her cheek, his nose nuzzling hers.
Sharon turned to look at the light of the city of dreams. It was beautiful. With Swayam's arms around her, she felt extremely safe and secure in his arms, as if nothing and no one could harm her if he was around.
They stood staring down at the city until Sharon had enough. She turned and looked at Swayam. He was busy admiring her rather than the view. She gently lifted her hand and moved it through his hair. He held the same hand and kissed it gently. They then walked back to their table. Swayam seated Sharon and then settled down himself.
"Thank you Swayam."
"For what? Scaring you?" He said, jokingly.
"No...For taking away the scare. Thank you. Now I know you always will be around to make sure I don't fall off the edge of the building right?"
"Always. And no thanks', please. I should never hear that word from you again, get that?" He said, extremely seriously.
Sharon just looked at him, blushing a little at what he had said.
"I can't believe this is just our first date!" she said, once the waiter had taken their order and left. "I feel like we've been together forever, I don't know why."
"Maybe we have, Sharon. Maybe we just didn't know it. Maybe..maybe our hearts were always connected from the time we were born but we just didn't realize until we met each other." He reached across the table and took her hand in his.
"Maybe." Sharon smiled, thinking about what he had said. He slowly rubbed her hand as they stared into each other's eyes. Unknown to the other person, both were silently thanking God they had met each other.
Swayam realized how much he had changed because of Sharon. From being a useless, good-for nothing rich son, he had become a hardworking, ambitious man. He could proudly say the money he was spending on the date was the money he himself had earned. Of course, it was still his father's business, but thanks to him, the company had raked in huge profits. With Sharon around, he actually wanted to see a smile on her face constantly. He wanted to make her happy. Her happiness was what made him happy. And right now, seeing her beautiful smiling face in front of him, he couldn't help but feel content.
"So let's get to work." Sharon piped up suddenly.
"Work?"
"Yup! We need to send these emails by tomorrow and I-"
Swayam gave her a look. Sharon stopped.
"No work, Sharon. Please. I want it to be just you and me today."
"Only today?"
"Duh of course! Tomorrow I'll check if your sister is free or not!" Swayam said grinning.
Sharon lunged across to hit him playfully. The thought of Kriya reminded her about what had happened in the afternoon. She realized Swayam hadn't even mentioned it.
"Um Swayam did your parents tell you anything about marriage?"
"What?" said a confused Swayam. "Our marriage? Already? I'm mean sure of course, but we haven't even told our parents about our-"
"Uffo, not our marriage silly. Didn't your parents tell you that they were planning to marry you and Kriya?"
Swayam nearly choked on the lemon ice tea he was drinking.
"Wh-wh-whaat? I was just joking about your sister now!"
"Swayam I'm not talking about now! Apparently your parents met mine and wanted the two of you'll to get married. Thankfully I managed to talk dad out of it. And it's good in a way , if your parents didn't tell you. Lesser embarrassment. Kriya was nearly on the verge of crying!"
Swayam had calmed down by then. His playful mood had returned. "Why..would I make that bad a husband?"
"No" Sharon said seriously, "She..um..she has feelings for Rey-"
"Oh thank God! Thank God! That guy has been bugging my head since so long trying to make me find out if she likes him too! He's head over heels over her, man! It's crazy!"
"OMG I'm so happy for the two of them. But what a minute. It's crazy if Rey is head over heels over Kriya, huh? So what about me? Are you not head over heels over me?"
Swayam bit his tongue. "Oops. Of course I'm head over heels over you. I love you, more than anyone or anything else in this world. It's just that I don't keep bugging my best friend about it."
Sharon laughed. Just then her phone beeped. It was a message from Kriya.
"Need you home ASAP. URGENT. CAN'T TALK. HURRY!!"
Sharon was confused. What was wrong. She was just going to call Kriya when her phone began buzzing. It was her dad calling. She picked it up fast.
"Hel-"
"WHERE ARE YOU SHARON?" Sharon turned pale. Swayam noticed the change of expression and asked who it was.
"Sharon are you there?" Her dad was bellowing into the phone. "And who is that person with you. Tell me now!"
"Dad, dad, what's wrong?"
"I'll tell you what's wrong. Your sister has been spending time with a male friend of hers these days. "Friend" would not be the appropriate word here though.Reyansh or something. How come we didn't know about this? Please don't tell me you knew about this and kept us in the dark too?"
Sharon didn't say anything. She was too stunned to reply.
"Oh of course you knew about it. Isn't that why you didn't want her getting married to somebody else? And may I ask who you are with. It's 11 PM!"
"Dad, dad I can explain. I'm coming home, ok? I'm coming home..just please calm down."
"Calm down? My two young daughters are lying about their personal lives and you expect me to stay calm? And you'd better bring along whoever is with you right now. I don't want another lie to come from your mouth. "Sharon gulped and looked at Swayam who was frantically trying to judge what was happening.
Before Sharon could even reply, her dad had hung up the phone.
"WHAT HAPPENED?" Swayam asked loudly.
"I'll explain everything. We need to leave NOW." Sharon grabbed her bag and took Swayam's hand in hers, pulling him up off his chair.
"Is your mom fine? Something happened to Kriya? WHY are you crying?" Swayam said, as he struggled to keep pace with the half running Sharon. Tears had begun to spill out of Sharon's eyes. In the lift, she broke down in Swayam's arms and told him everything that had happened over the phone. Swayam re-assured her everything would be fine.
They quickly got into the car and drove to Sharon's house. All the while, Swayam was whispering comforting and calming words to make Sharon feel better. Sharon had stopped crying but she still worried about her parents' reactions.
They reached the house and Sharon ran out of the car. Her dad was standing right outside, as if he had expected her to arrive just then.
"Where's you companion?" He asked, almost sarcastically.
Swayam emerged from behind, having parked the car. It was dark and he could barely see Mr Rai Prakash's face.
But Sharon's father had seen who it was. His eyes went wide open.
"Swayam Shekhawat?"
