Chess Rules

A Brief Overview Of Chess Rules

While virtually everyone has heard of the game chess, not everyone is familiar with the specifics of the rules of the game. Sure, most know that the object to the game is to checkmate one's opponent (you could learn that by just frequently watching TV), most are not familiar with chess rules in their entirety.

The most baseline chess rules are as follows: chess is a two player game where one person controls a white military pieces (more often than not figures based on armies and royalty of the middle ages) and the other person controls black military pieces. There are different figures (Knight, King, Queen, Bishop, Castle) as opposed to uniform (ala checkers) and the different pieces each have their own specific lines of movement. Opponents can capture the other players pieces, thus, per chess rules, removes them from the play of the game. The game continues until the King of the opposing team is rendered immobile or checkmated.

Now, the pawn has an asterisk next to its name in chess rules because it has the following special movement rule pertaining only to it. When pawns make double steps from the second to fourth row, and an enemy pawn occupies and adjacent square on the fourth row, the enemy pawn may move diagonally to the third row square that was passed over by the other pawn. That is one of the more complicated chess rules, but it has the ability to swing the game because many times players forget this rule.

Chess is a board game based more on strategy than on complicated moves or chess rules. But, this does not mean that the game is without any rules or set of order. The absence of a large amount of complicated rules, however, allows the game to have tremendous freedom in the strategies which are only limited by the skills of the opponents.
