Brilliant post...SP should propagate their 'Nayi Soch'...domestic abuse, alcoholism is prevelant world wide...but media should take the opportunity to spread proper message to the masses..be it through daily soaps...which is a popular form of entertainment..

Today Kumud's outburst at Saras was her subconscious mind (remember Freud?) venting out the irony of her predicament. Saras reflects all that she could have had if she had not in her pride insisted on getting married to the first available person. I think it was very apt that Kumud mentioned Saraswati because right now Kumud like Saraswati is behaving and feeling trapped in a loveless marriage; abused by a selfish husband who favors his mistress while belittling her; bound by old world thinking that she has to grin and bear it until death separates her from her husband; and too proudly weak to admit her entrapment!

She harps on relationships because relationships are strangling her neck as if held in a vice ... On one hand she does not want to shatter her parents happiness and on the other she does not want to admit to her in-laws that she cannot handle-n-reform Pramad.

Is it not an irony that a teacher in modern day India is unaware that addicts need a detoxification program?

Is it not an irony that a forward thinking political leader is unaware that addiction is a mental health problem and needs medical intervention?

The book was written before detoxification programs were common knowledge. On one hand the CVs are aware of Skype but on the other they are unaware of common medical advances!

All the posts here are so mature and intelligent. I feel the cvs are confused in which period is Saraswatichandra being depicted. At one point they show all the latest technology, and then the next point they use archaic reasons for marrying off Pramad to Kumud. In the past, the tendency has always been to marry off a rogue with the hope that the responsibility and the wife will do the job.

I agree with your post. On one end we get iPhones and FaceTime and on the other side we have alcoholics and wh**emongers being married off to for wives to "reform" them? What is this the 18th century?

I don't think showing a self respecting girl like Kumud putting up with domestic abuse as her "fate" is the right way to go. One of the main reasons I liked Kumud was her no nonsense approach and never say die attitude. She has an ego, and she had a lot of self worth. Not your typical "crying Bahu", or a typical goody two shoes "martyr" type!

I understand that she is trying to hide the truth from her family and her in laws for her worry of what they will think and also for her pride! But how long can she hide abuse? She needs to tell the Dharamadikari's what Pramad is doing, so they can intervene! After all, it is THEIR responsibility! They got Kumud married to their son...knowing full well what a wastrel he is? Therefore it is only right that they intervene and resolve the issue! They put an unsuspecting girls life into misery! They should take some of the blame!

As for Kumud and Saras...she resents Saras as the reason that she ended up married to Pramad! She thinks she got this life courtesy of Saras betrayal of her! She has yet to think that she also agreed to this marriage on the rebound! But I DO empathise with why she did it! It will take her time to stop the blame game and move on in life!
