waititng for the next partPayal's laughter trilled on the other side of the phone.
"It's not even funny Payal. Arnav can be really immature when he wants to be especially when he is in this mood to irritate the hell out of me. And finally he accepted that Aman and I don't have a thing going on between us." Khushi grumbled.
Payal dissolved into giggles once more. "Oh? What changed his mind?"
"Aman finally, very sternly mind you, told him that he isn't interested in me. I think Arnav already knows that but he is just messing around with the two of us – me in particular. Since I didn't rise to the usual bait, he started a new tactic to fluster me, asshole that he is."
"Language, Khushi!" Payal exclaimed scandalized trying to control giggles.
"My skin is thickening and mouth refuses to be polite when Arnav's douchebag-ness is being discussed," Khushi replied amicably. "Believe me Payal, it's how I have been programmed." She added seriously.
"But you are having a good time at work, don't you?" Payal asked after all giggles were out of her system. Khushi hummed.
"These moments with Arnav and Aman are the few times when the three of us forget the stress surrounding us or the pressure for Arnav to get the work done. I have seen how Arnav works Payal – he is relentless and pours everything he has to his job. There are times I wonder I am being immature with my point of view by failing to see a bigger picture than he does as he tells me that I lack holistic approach to a given situation. However his ego walks into the room from time to time and his stubbornness drives me up the wall." Khushi ranted.
"You called me to rant on your boss?" Payal asked.
Khushi bristled at that. "I am sorry Payal…" she trailed. "I didn't realize…" she couldn't complete.
Payal chuckled softly. "What are you apologizing for Khushi? I am your big sister and I am sure listening to little sisters' crib on their bosses is pretty much in our job description," Payal said smoothing the wrinkles ruffled by Khushi's entrenchment.
Khushi sighed softly and allowed herself a small smile happy with the familiarity flowing between the two. Payal however wasn't done. "And I also know that the main reason for you to call me wasn't rant on Arnav but talk to ma and papa about Shyam, isn't it?"
Khushi exhaled loudly. "Am I being…snooty about this Payal? Shyam hasn't officially proposed or anything but he is subtly making his intentions clear." Khushi's fingers were drumming on the table and her knees were bobbing one after the other. She was jittery and there was an inexplicable need to fix the train of thoughts running rampant on her mind and she had called Payal when she believed she would go to a panic attack of she isn't talked out of the situation with Shyam.
"Khushi, if you don't like him then you don't like him. There is nothing more to it." Payal said gently. "Can you take a deep breath for me sweet heart?" Payal asked knowing the reason behind Khushi's panic ridden voice. She had eased up into the crux of the problem by raking up Arnav who successfully managed to sidetrack Khushi from path of confusion to a path of annoyance.
Khushi took a deep breath following Payal's order. "Follow my voice Khushi…Inhale" Five seconds later, Payal's voice breezed. "Now slowly exhale. Repeat this again for me," Payal's voice was soothing and Khushi found herself closing her eyes and following Payal's breathing instructions. Five minutes of breathing exercises later, Khushi opened her eyes and thanked Payal.
"I'll tell ma and papa about your inhibition towards his advancements. I'll tell them that you aren't very keen in pursuing him and see him as a man who helped our family in need and you respect and appreciate all the help and advices he has given to you. I'll ask them to stay away from the 'friend' bit too," She said insisting on the word 'friend', "Lest they give him hope. As you don't harbor any special feelings towards him except for amicable respect, they should decline any sort of proposal from him if or when he makes."
"Thanks a million, Payal." Khushi said softly.
Payal chuckled. "Don't be silly little sister. It's the least I can do." She said gently. "Now tell me how you came to lose keys to your desk for the seventh time since you joined this job." Humor laced her words making Khushi groan loudly.
"I don't know why it happens to me." Khushi whined. "I dropped my keys into a small rain trench which was covered by serrated iron bars. How do you know this anyway?" Khushi asked suspiciously.
"Ma told me last week and I completely forgot to follow it up with you. However she didn't tell me how you recovered them though."
"Superman came and helped me." Khushi deadpanned.
"Come on Khushi, don't be like that." It was Payal's turn to whine.
"Alright, I'll tell you." Khushi said defeated by her sister's gentility. It was a fond memory and she didn't mind sharing with her dear sister anyway. "Well, I was crouching on the ground and trying to get my hand in and I couldn't reach the keys. I could slip my palm after flattening it between to bars but I couldn't reach the keys. So this guy, who was watching me from afar, came in and did this neat trick – he picked a thin wire from sidewalk, hooked one of the end, dropped it into the groove and picked the keys out. It was awesome." Khushi gushed.
"Did you thank the young man properly?" Payal asked amused.
"I never mentioned if he was young or old Payal. I said 'a man'." Khushi argued.
"If it was an old man, you wouldn't be gushing as if you were talking about your crush. You sound like a fourteen year old girl seeing a teen heartthrob face to face." Payal chuckled.
Khushi swallowed. "Well…." She trailed.
Payal barked out a laugh. "Oh my God! You are totally crushing on him!"
"I am not," Khushi said stubbornly.
"Are too."
"Am not."
"Khushi."
"Payal."
"Oh come on Khushi. I hope you got a name, address, phone number, email id, twitter-"
"Payal!" Khushi interjected, scandalized.
Payal giggled. "So, name."
Khushi said breathily, "His name is Akash Sampat. And since you were being mean to me, I am not going to tell anymore about him. So boo."
Payal grumbled. "Play nice Khushi. I am-"
"Got to go Payal! We are invited to attend havan at Raizadas. Bye!"
Khushi hung up and fell on her bed, face first. She could hear her heart beating wildly in her chest. Yes, she had a teeny-weeny crush on Akash who worked in a cooperative society formed by small scale workshops which were subcontracted by bigger industries.
They hadn't talked much but just exchanged their name and where they worked. She didn't understand why he had smiled when she told him her job title.
She was hoping she would run to him again but that hadn't happened yet.
She could only hope.
