Ramaiya Vastavaiya
By Taran Adarsh, 19 Jul 2013, 11:12 hrs IST
Boy meets girl. Falls in love. But family doesn't endorse their relationship. Determined, the lovers resolve to win over the displeased relatives through hard slog, willpower and integrity... Aah, haven't we visited similar themes numerous times in the past? But storytellers the world over tend to replicate stories -- with modifications and alterations, of course -- interpreting the yarn in their individualistic way.

After regaling spectators with masala entertainers like WANTED and ROWDY RATHORE, Prabhu Dheva unleashes his new outing RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA. Clearly, the promos give an inkling that Prabhu dwells on the age-old formula in his third Hindi outing, a genre that's oft-repeated post MAINE PYAR KIYA [1989]. Come to think of it, not only does RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA bring back memories of MAINE PYAR KIYA, but also ANARI [1993; Venkatesh - Karisma Kapoor, with Suresh Oberoi playing the strict older brother], DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE [1995; SRK - Kajol, with Amrish Puri as the stern father] and PYAAR KIYA TO DARNA KYA [1998; Salman - Kajol, with Arbaaz enacting Kajol's authoritarian brother].

In reality, RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA is the remake of Prabhu Dheva's directorial debut NUVVOSTANANTE NENODDANTANA [Telugu; 2005], which was subsequently remade in other languages. The query is, why tag on the oft-repeated premise for a present-day film? But let me also add that romance is eternal and if one looks at the success ratio of this genre, the results have been fantastic, with almost every top name today having commenced his career with a love saga.

RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA may bear similarities with above named movies, but the drama unfurls way too differently here. Sure, there are deja vu moments, despite the germ of thought being analogous, but Prabhu and screenplay writer Shiraz Ahmed ensure that they pack several novel and mass-friendly punches, introduce new characters, besides packaging it well enough for the entertainment-seeking spectator to lap it up.

Ram [Girish Kumar], the Australia-returned youngster, meets Sona [Shruti Haasan] at his cousin's wedding and falls in love with her. He follows her to her farm, run by her brother [Sonu Sood], who is against this match, since Ram is too affluent for them. He throws a challenge at Ram if he has to win Sona's hand in marriage...

The emphasis is solely and absolutely on providing entertainment in movies such as RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA and Prabhu Dheva has mastered the art since the time he donned the director's hat. The aiming-at-masses director struck the pot of gold in his first two Hindi movies and in RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA too, he ensures he ups the entertainment quotient in every frame. Of course, unlike WANTED and ROWDY RATHORE, where romance was the second-most important ingredient, the love story is the focal point of RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA, but Prabhu is not at sea tackling the genre. Furthermore, this may be atypical love story, with the spectator knowing beforehand what the wrap up would be, but the journey in the second hour specifically is pleasurable, with Prabhu and writer Shiraz Ahmed blending episodes to cater to every strata of the movie-going audience.

RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA is not without its share of blemishes. To start with, the sequences between the lovers don't work in entirety. Note the sequence at the bath tub; it only adds to the length of the film. Besides, the narrative tends to stagnate in a few sequences, while a few episodes have been stretched for no particular reason. Cinematography [splendid work by Kiran Deohans] and the action [invigorating fights by Kaushal-Moses] are in tandem with the content of the film.

With Kumar Taurani [Tips] in the producer's chair, obviously, the soundtrack has to be rich. It's a given, right? And Sachin-Jigar, the talented jodi, doesn't disappoint either. 'Jeene Laga Hoon' is lilting and has already attained tremendous popularity, while 'Jadoo Ki Jhappi' and 'Rang Jo Lagyo' are wonderful compositions as well. Priya Panchal's lyrics compliment the melodies, while the choreography is eye-catching as well.

Obviously, RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA is the launch vehicle for Girish Kumar and the actor gets the opportunity to sing, dance, fight, emote, display varied emotions... in short, the film is meant to be a showreel that shows off his acting credentials. Of course, Girish being a first-timer, there are some rough edges, but the fact is, he's photogenic and goes through the rigmarole with confidence. Whether it his introductory sequence [surfing in the sea] or breaking into a dance, whether he's exposing his chiseled physique or wearing desi outfits, whether he's asked to look innocent or flirtatious, Girish gets it right.

Shruti Haasan looks gorgeous and is akin to a breath of fresh breeze. She radiates innocence, but can be naughty the next minute and conveys a lot through her eyes. It would be great to see her in varied roles in times to come. Sonu Sood is exceptional. In fact, this is amongst his finest performances. The film has a gigantic supporting cast comprising of Vinod Khanna, Randhir Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Govind Namdev, Satish Shah, Zakir Hussain, Nasser, Sarfaraz Khan, Mushtaq Khan and Paresh Ganatra and each of them enact their respective parts with proficiency. Jacqueline Fernandez and Prabhu Dheva's song is high on energy.

On the whole, RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA is a simplistic love story narrated competently. Besides, the chemistry between the lead actors, the gripping second hour and of course, the Hit musical score should contribute to its triumph. Recommended!

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Review

July 19th, 2013 by Mohar Basu

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Movie Poster

Rating: 2.5/5 stars (Two And Half Stars)

Star cast: Girish Kumar, Shruti Haasan, Randhir Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Vinod Khanna, Poonam Dhillon, Satish Shah, Govind Namdeo, Zakir Hussain, Nassar, Anchal Singh, Pankhuri Awasthi

Director: Prabhu Deva

What's Good: Designed to be an obsessive crowd pleaser this film doesn't leave any stone unturned to be obviously funny!

What's Bad: The film tries too hard to be funny, loud and ridiculous, not to mention cliched!

Loo break: Innumerable

Watch or Not?: Ramaiya Vastavaiya is for people who have a taste in juvenile comedy. This Prabhudeva directorial works unabashedly on regular formula of a hero, a heroine and her staunch elder brother. Expect an average entertainer, this one is a stylishly silly, regular masala rom-com that expects you to leave your brains at home!

An Australian born NRI Ram flows down to India to attend his cousin's wedding and falls in love with her friend Sona. Despite other women eyeing him, her nave charm makes our hero go gaga on her.

But one insulting scene between his mother and girl's brother shatters his perfect picture. Now he must impress a conservative and robust brother, who is fiercely protective of his only sister. The film attempts to celebrates the triumph of a love story that must mend a few impossible fractures to win.

Girish Kumar And Shruti Haasan in Ramaiya Vastavaiya Movie Stills

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Review: Script Analysis

I would have shamelessly said 'What Story?' but that would be unacceptable and so I will care to elaborate on this. This movie is a cross between Salman-Kajol starrer Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya and the classic Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. What lacks here is the innocence and elan of those films! The one-liners and gags are simply stupid and leave no impact. The term subtle has no relevance in such films and hence its best you don't expect it. The gags don't seem to exhaust themselves as they begin to stench more through its runtime, making it even more tedious to bear with. The heavy borrowing from Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kiya just proves that there is such a dearth of innovation in dishing out old ideas!

Prabhudeva manages to make the story sleek in extraordinary ways but his efforts are half baked as every frame of the films will remind you either of the afore mentioned films. This film is invariably stale with no earnestness that is what fails it.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Review: Star Performances

Girish Kumar has innocent eyes and that's all I managed to notice about him. It was bearable sitting through his chimp like acting because he is endearing!

Shruti Haasan is the striking shadow of her mother, in beauty. However, her acting has way to go before it evolves to that! She has a pleasant screen presence to aide her shaky performance which works in her favor.

Sonu Sood is robust and scorching! Yes, it indeed doesn't match up to the charisma he lent to Chedhi Singh in Dabangg but he is undoubtedly good!

Randhir Singh is wonderful as Girish's father and Vinod Khanna is just as appealing. And both Poonam Dhillon and Satish Shah deserved better roles!

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Review: Direction, Screenplay and Music

Prabhudeva's signature flamboyance is what the film reeks of. His first tryst with making a romantic comedy is as good or bad as the rest of his repertoire. However, the film lacks the enigma of his previous films, for the obvious lack of actors that colossal. The screenplay is colorful and doesn't go insipid but the grotesque sense of humor it imbibes could have been avoided. The music is strictly fine and Jaadu Ki Jhappi is what prevails for Prabhudeva's maverick like dance.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Review: The Last Word

Ramaiya Vastavaiya is strictly a mediocre entertainer that despite its loud and garish ways manages to hold well. Its childish and regular formulaic affair works if have the appetite for standard entertainer. I am going with 2.5/5. If you lock up your logic, this one will do for you!

D Day And Ramaiya Vastavaiya Poor Start Bhaag Milkha Bhaag To Dominate

Friday 19th July 2012 11.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The two major new releases of the week D Day and Ramaaiya Vastavaiya both opened to a poor response of 15-20%. The collections are weak at multiplexes all over and single screens are not likley to be any better although Ramaiya Vastavaiya may do better in single screens of small markets like CP Berar and CI.

The weekend is set to be dominated by Bhaag Milka Bhaag and it could also turn out that Bhaag Milkha Bhaag may be the front runner on Friday as well unless one or both of the new releases pick up well later on today.

In Delhi city and East Punjab the 8th day morning collections of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag are much better than the opening show collections of D Day and Ramaiya Vastavaiya.

Even if Bhaag Milkha Bhaag remains a bit lower than one or both of the new releases on Friday, the weekend should be a different story as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will show huge growth on Saturday and Sunday as it is an established film with appreciattion.

amaiya Vastavaiya and D-Day Box Office Opening Update for Friday

Both Ramaiya Vastavaiya and D-Day has released today at Indian Box Office. Ramaiya Vastavaiya is a Romatic Comedy film starring Girish Kumar, Shruti Haasan, Sonu Sood and directed by Prabhudeva. Whereas D-Day is completely different genre starring Rishi Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Irrfan Khan, Huma Qureshi and Shruti Haasan and is a crime thriller.

Coming to the buzz of the film before the release. There is some kind of buzz for both the films, but can't be said great. As far as Opening in Box Office is concerned on Friday Morning, both film has started slowly in Morning shows. From early reports, D-Day has registered an occupancy of 15%. Whereas, Ramaiya Vastavaiya has registered a slightly better opening of around 15-20% as it stars newcomers in lead. But still opening is just below par. With such slow opening both film will definitely register growth through the day. But will that be enough to collect a decent total for first day is another big question.

Both film will depend on word of mouth power of the film and if that is good then expect business to multiply through the weekend. There is also another hurdle called Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which is flying at the moment in the box office, which might dent the business of both the above mentioned films. BMB has able to retain a very good number of screens and it might again be the first choice for moviegoers in this weekend also

The film is barely halfway into the first half at this point of the narrative, but the audience has already clearly drifted away, as the loud sniggers, snide comments and audible fidgets in the auditorium indicate.

Indian Express | Shubhra Gupta

There really is nothing more to say other than I really felt each minute of the nearly three hours hang like lead. Every single clich in the book is thrown into the mix, with poor Poonam Dhillon as the mother-of- the- boy-from-hell, and Randhir Kapoor as the father-of- the-boy- trying hard to act sensible, having to mouth the most inane lines. I had not an iota of interest in the leads, neither in the first-time Kumar, nor in Haasan who appears a veteran in comparison. My heart goes out to Sonu Sood who is a good actor, and who gets stuck in this kind of tripe.

NOT RECOMMENDED
Nowrunning | Mansha Rastogi

The formula caper has its elements of sugary sweetness but there's no amount of painstaking labour that saves this film from being a rehash material. Even the loud over the top comedy can only work for the people who find amateurish attempts funny or derive sadist pleasure in unintentional humour.

NOT RECOMMENDED
Zeenews | Mekhla Singh

As for the actors, Shruti Hassan fails to captivate the heart with her performance and delivers her dialogues at the same pace and with the same emotion no matter what the scene is. As for Girish Kumar – who has debuted with this movie – India may have literally found a "jumping jack". Weather he's dancing, or flirting or just walking, he is always "jumpy" about it. Sonu Sood, on the other hand, does manage to portray a farmer to perfection – from his clothes to the way he speaks.

NOT RECOMMENDED
Glamsham | Martin D'Souza

Girish is a confident lad who delivers in style. A few more films and this guy will be ready to rock and roll. There's sincerity in his approach. But for a few scenes in the beginning, he is well adept with the craft of giving a fluent take without being self-conscious.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya movie review

Cast:Gaurav Kumar, Shruti Haasan
Director: Prabhu Deva

SPOILERS AHEAD

A farmer's beloved sis and an NRI tycoon's boisterous son fall in love in the course of the garish wedding of the latter's cousin who happens to be the former's best friend.

All hell breaks loose when the family elders find out that the lovebirds have been getting cosy on the sly. The girl is accused of trying to ensnare a wealthy boy.

The young lovers are separated and the girl and her brother are thrown out of the party.

All this plays out to accompaniment of an ear-splitting background score. There is also a song-and-dance set piece at every turn. It is all predictable and tiresome.

If the plot reeks of Bollywood of the 1980s, it isn't surprising at all: Ramaiya Vastavaiya, Prabhu Deva's remake of his debut Telugu hit, owes its primary inspiration to Maine Pyar Kiya. Yes, this wine is that stale. No wonder it stinks.

Nothing in Prabhu Deva's directorial style suggests that he is interested in the least in imparting a fresh coat of paint to this old construct.

To make sure that the past weighs heavy on the proceedings, the cast has actors like Vinod Khanna, Randhir Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon and Satish Shah.

Ironically, they are the only ones in this infantile romp who manage to stay just a little above the morass.

The rest of the film is so raucous and utterly tasteless that it is difficult to believe that any established producer would want it to be his son's launch vehicle.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya opens in a jail, where a prisoner, Raghuvir (Sonu Sood), on the eve of his release, narrates to the warden the story behind his imprisonment.

Like much else in the film, it isn't explained why the prison official needed to wait for the very last day of a lengthy sentence to find out why this man got here in the first place.

Cut to a village temple. A boy's mother asks the priest to offer a coconut to the deity on behalf of her son and an infant daughter. It turns out that coconut is rotten on the inside – a bad omen.

The woman, abandoned by her husband, dies. The orphans are left to fend for themselves under the benign eyes of the local station master (Vinod Khanna).

By the time the credits end, the boy and the girl have grown up into an ideal brother-sister pair who vow to be by each other's side all their lives.

The stage is set for the love story to unfold.

Thousands of miles away, in Australia, the boy, Ram (Girish Kumar) emerges from the sea, his gym-toned body bared for the camera, and then proceeds to frolic on Bondi Beach with a bevy of biki-clad girls as his hen-pecked dad (Randhir Kapoor) calls him to check on him.

The old man is a successful businessman, but loses his nerve before his foul-tempered wife (Poonam Dhillon).

At the other end of the spectrum is the heroine, Sona (Shruti Haasan), whose vehicle of choice is a bullock cart.

She has been brought up in a village by the afore-mentioned doting and hard working elder brother, who now owns a thriving poultry farm.

For the first time in her life, Sona leaves her brother alone and travels to her friend's home for the latter's wedding.

Ram arrives, his supercilious mother in tow, and falls head over heels for humble Sona even as a construction magnate (Nasser) has his eyes on him for his daughter, Dolly.

Dolly is the kind of bimbette that no right-thinking boy, even a spoilt brat like the one we have here, would touch with the end of a barge-pole. The frisky Ram, who prances about the house like little puppy freed from its leash, keeps her at arm's length and inches closer to Sona.

The film is barely halfway into the first half at this point of the narrative, but the audience has already clearly drifted away, as the loud sniggers, snide comments and audible fidgets in the auditorium indicate.

Girish Kumar, producer Kumar Taurani's son, hides behind a four-day stubble in a bid to look more mature than he really is. His gawky ways give him away.

Shruti Haasan is only marginally better but she, too, has miles to go before she can breathe easy as an actress.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Movie Review : It will make you laugh, cry and fight...

Ramaiya Vastavaiya
Director : Prabhudheva
Music : Sachin-Jigar
Lyrics : Priya Panchal
Starring : Girish Kumar, Shruti Haasan, Sonu Sood, Randhir Kapoor and Vinod Khanna

Send to Friend

This is a launch vehicle for Kumar Taurani's son Girish Kumar Taurani. And what better way than to go the traditional way.

By traditional I mean, a love story with all the ingredients that go to make it snappy, soppy, and action oriented.

view RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA videos

Kumar Gaurav, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, to name a few, all took this route. The formula is simple. Boy meets girl. Boy is rich but in love, his parents are aghast that something like this can happen. Girl is insulted. Enough ammunition for the movie to move forward.

Raghuvir (Sonu Sood) has singlehandedly brought up his sister Sona (Shruti Haasan). Their father had turned his back on them, while his mother dies of shock and humiliation. Raghu is a simple hard-working farmer who wants to give the world to his sister.

She has a friend, who is like a sister to him. She comes from an affluent family. Sona stays for over a week in their house since she is getting married. Visiting her 'sister' is her cousin from Australia Ram (Girish). The two fall in love. But when his mother realizes this, she sends Ram on an errand and finds a way to humiliate Sona. Raghu walks in at that precise moment and he too is humiliated.

CHECK OUT: Shruti Haasan - I deeply admire and respect Prabhudheva

Ram understands what his mother has done and instead of taking the flight back to Australia, he hoodwinks his mother at Singapore and returns to India in search of Sona. To win her hand, Raghu puts him through the grind in the fields... literally.

Raghu realizes that Ram indeed loves Sona. But will the lovers unite? Will Ram manage to reap more harvest than Raghu (as is the bet) to marry Sona?

Prabhudheva moves on from fast-paced action films (WANTED and ROWDY RATHORE) to a simple love story. The movie is honest and so are the performances. 'Jeene laga' is a track that is beautifully used throughout the movie

Girish is a confident lad who delivers in style. A few more films and this guy will be ready to rock and roll. There's sincerity in his approach. But for a few scenes in the beginning, he is well adept with the craft of giving a fluent take without being self-conscious.

GIRISH KUMAR and SHRUTI HAASAN in RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA wallpapers

Sonu Sood as the elder brother, as expected is good. Nassar, in a completely different role, surprises with his versatility. This guy can also do buffoonery. Brilliant. Shruti Haasan as the girl in love and in awe of her brother displays the right shades of emotion, keeping herself back in key moments, not making this an over-the-top romance.

CHECK OUT: RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA - Prabhudheva redirects his debut directorial film

Full marks to director Prabhudheva for keeping the youngsters in check and giving the movie the precise dose of love, emotion, action and dance. He does not even overstay the time limit. And that is another huge plus that will work in favour of the film.

RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA will make you laugh, cry and fight with the heroes.

Go for it.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya Has A Good Opening Day Occupancy At The Box Office

Prabhudeva directorial Ramaiya Vastavaiya opened to a good occupancy in most key circuits on its opening day at the Box Office. Aimed mainly at the single screens, the film's initial pick up has been good given the track record of Prabhudeva's popularity from his last stints.

Shruti Haasan And Girish Kumar in Ramaiya Vastavaiya Movie Stills

The film is up for competing with the highly charged action film D-Day which will grab a good share of the multiplex audiences given its sensibilities.

Both the films this week will face hard competition from last week's Bhaag Milkha Bhaag that is doing great business too. Given the good occupancy, it will all depend on the word of mouth to help Ramaiya Vastavaiyagrow or fall accordingly.
