Katrina - How long does it take to learn Hindi?

After skimming through pekingexpress's thread, I started wondering how long would it take for a non-Hindi speaker to learn Hindi to a proficient level, or to learn any language for that matter.

So how long would it take for a native English speaker to learn Hindi?, surely not 10 bloody years and still remain uncomfortable enough to communicate in it.

The Foreign Service Institute of the US Department of State has a list based on data gathered on the average number of hours required to learn different languages. The list of languages are divided into three main groups depending on the relative difficulty for a NATIVE English speaker to learn them, some languages are more closer to English and thus require less time than others, although this is just a rough guide and not an absolute measure.

Category 1 are "languages are closely related to English", these are French, Germain, Italian.. roughly 23-24 weeks (575-600 class hours)

Category 2 are "languages with significant linguistic and/or cultural differences from English" - Greek, Turkish, Farsi, Hindi, Russian, Tamil etc... 44 weeks (1100 class hours)

Category 3 are the hardest for native English speakers, they are Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean etc... 88 weeks (2200 class hours)(about half that time preferably spent studying in-country)

Coming back to topic.
Well she doens't need to because her chikni chameli thumkas and hot legs are more than enough for her movies to work.
Who cares if she cant act or doesn't speak our language.

That's not surprising, what would be surprising is if you couldn't speak English. 😆

Well I come from a non Hindi speaking family. We're Gujju so the primary language we speak in the house is Gujju (or English). I've never learned the language of Hindi or taken any classes. I have not lived in India. Only visited 3 times in my entire 23 years of my life.

I learned to to speak it and understand it simply through tv shows on Indian channels and Bollywood movies. Honestly I don't know when I started to really get the grasp of the language but it just came naturally after listening to songs, watching movies, watching serials.

The language isn't hard to learn. But you got to put some sort of effort into learning the language. You have to have interest. As a singer, I always wanted to know about the language. I've grown up around Hindi speaking people so I've tried to speak with them in Hindi rather than English so I could grasp the language better. Especially when speaking to elders, I always speak Hindi (if they don't understand Gujju). To learn it, you should practice it. If you just speak your native language all the time, you'll never learn. And if you're especially in the Indian Film Industry, you should know how to speak a decent amount of HIndi. SOmetimes I feel like I can speak a lot better Hindi than Katrina when in reality she should be knowing how to speak better than me. 😆

no idea...how long it takes...but I a native dutch speaker and weak english writer learned to understand arabic within weeks. I just really badly wanted to know what my Kadim said in his interviews. So I just listened intently...suddenly basic stuff like good morning/evening, how are you, hello, thank you, sweetheart, just words he repeated often i started to understand. A few weeks later i could understand like 30% of what he said...and now 5 years later i understand 90%...

Can't tell you whether I could speak it though, because i never got the chance to speak it to someone (yet).

Anyway: KAT = DUMB.

I didn't do anything special...i just listened to a lot of arabic spoken interviews...today i can watch arabic movies/dramas etc.

It's not that hard to learn a language. The worst part is Kat is actually LIVING in India...how can one not pick up the language then?
