Should India build special schools for HIV + children? This came to me when I heard of the discrimination being shown towards some kids who have been diagnosed of carrying the deadly virus. I believe this was reported in the Indian Media but more so in the Western Media. How 2 kids from Kerala went on a hunger strike just to be readmitted to school, but there are fears among other parents that it will spread to their kids. One more case reported in Andhra Pradesh, where a little boy was thrown out of school.

What should be done? Is this fair to the child? Where is India going with this burgeoning problem?

Thanks,

Velu

It looks like a knowledge defecit problem. The answer should be EDUCATION not SEGREGATION!

Having separate schools would only increase the discrimination against them and stigma will continue. Instead of beign integrated into the society the children would be segregated out of the society. Awareness and social empathy is the key here.

Agree with Sudha and Lavanya!

AIDs is not a contagious disease. Segregation will only increase discrimination further against these students.

No, that would be uncalled for discriminatio against HIVp children. Moreover, the knowledge that some of the kids in class could be HIV positive will keep many high-schoolers from getting irresponsible with their sexual activity.
Yes, it will be harder for parents, perhaps a cause of anxiety, but isn't parenthood supposed to be that way?

But what about dignity? as someone pointed out to me, leprosy was stigmatised the same way decades ago.

Will the state ensure that these kids are not ill-treated and indignified in schools and public life?

Will teachers ensure that they are not called names and avoided?

Is it not better to live with dignity rather than go through constant humiliation and insults?

When the elders themselves are being ill-treated in our country, how can you all say that the youngsters will not be?

Will their little hearts take this trauma?

Who is to protect them?
Who is to prevail with better sense?
Who has the time and patience to safeguard the child's right to an education and a better livelihood, despite being HIV+?

It is good to be idealistic, but will idealism find solutions?

Both hav a point... And true... Partially functioning solutions are better than non functiona ones...
We can have alternate education... But only for those students who have been thrown out... Not for all those who have been diagnosed with AIDS...

That's pure discrimination! I despise that.IF you seperate them, they'll feel more left out and may not even get to enjoy the short life span that they will have!
