Totally agree and I really liked that dialogue. One thing I like about this show is that the dialogue writer gives really succinct dialogues when he. she wants to...in any other show this line would have been a whole lecture but I loved how it was just so to the point here. The water thing reminded me of my grandmother who would give me a nominal sum of money every time she ate in my home because it was a sin to eat in a daughter's home. My grandmother I oculd understand as she was old byt even my educated parents hold on to similar beliefs - they won't pay me directly but in roundabout ways - they always make sure the balance of what they give and what they receive from me is always in my favor. I guess as times change all these old customs will also change and I epecially see it with my peers who have been born and brought up outside of India. What do young people in India feel about this...do they hold views similar to CC? If so then these customs will die out in India too. I have no such qualms and my kids have been told that they can give whatever they want😃I guess though more than the gifts it's the concept of being lesser than the boys family because your daughter's happiness depended on them.Education and independence in girls shoud take care of most of these customs with time because they simple won't apply anymore.

I was born and brought up in India, although I have lived abroad for most of my married life ... times are changing, but mostly among the educated more liberal urban families that the Sarabhais represent. My Nana never ate a single meal at my mother's house ... while my parents visit me for 1-2 months every year ... they stay at my house, eat and drink at my house ... my husband has absolutely no problem, in fact they usually used to come when we need them to babysit my kids, when I am busy or going out on work ... my husband trusted them more with my kids than he did his own parents.

And neither did my in-laws have any issues with my parents visiting us either ... although they were conservative in other ways, but they always gave a lot of respect to my parents and to their other samdhis ... which is why both their DILs gave them respect. It works both ways ... if a girl's inlaws and husband respect HER parents, she finds it much easier to respect her inlaws too.

Education helps a lot in this aspect I feel ...
