Backbone a.k.a. boldness, guts, strength of character, etc. is not an inherited quality.
There are many kids who come from wishy-washy parents and others who are wimpy in spite of having strong parents.
It is, in part, a personality trait.
It can be honed or not, depending on the person, the circumstances, the environment, and guiding influences.
In the case of both the brothers, circumstances played a huge role in shaping this aspect of their nature.
The older brother is stronger because he was not shielded from the harsh truths of life and had to become parentified and responsible at a very young age.
The younger one is not as strong - though he is trying - because he was sheltered by his parents and by his brother through the tough times. His brother was also a guiding influence in him
He did have the personality trait to recognize good aspects in his brother instead of learning the wrong stuff from his own father.
It is only now, when the situation is again demanding hard choices that the younger brother is able to test his inner strength of character.
A person's personality is set by the age of 4.
How their character is shaped depends on all the above mentioned and other factors.

Nature vs. Nurture debates are so DIFFICULT.
I agree somethings can be inherited, but I truly believe that individuals are by majority shaped through their experiences based on the environments they live in and the situations they encounter.I think Asad and Aayan are shaped by the situations they have been facing since youth whether its personality or behavioral characteristics. Some traits seem as if they come from Rashid and/or Badi Bee, and/or their mothers (Dilshaad/Shireen). But I think those traits are either STRONG or WEAK based on the environmental and situations the individual faces. For Asad, his harshness, rashness, impulsiveness, obsessiveness, rage, confusion, some cowardice, has been impacted and developed by the what he faced as a child.
