Bollywood can survive beyond the Khans

After decades of domination by the three Khans (Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman), 2006 witnessed the establishment of a second generation of superstars who are set to takeover the baton.

Hrithik Roshan has clearly emerged as the next big bet in Bollywood. With two blockbusters - KRRISH and DHOOM 2 - within one year under his belt, the light-eyed hunk is being compared to Hollywood sensations Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

Hrithik's superhuman act in KRRISH has been touted as better than Hollywood's super heroes. And in DHOOM 2, he has given a blockbuster not produced by his father.

The film has also put the stamp of successive successes on Abhishek Bachchan, whose fortunes had turned for the better with BUNTY AUR BABLI and has been shinning since then.

Abhishek's upcoming single-hero project GURU is likely to consolidate his position as a performer-cum-star. One look at the reining films on the marquees and it seems that John Abraham is set to occupy top rankings in the tally of leading Bollywood actors in the New Year. Given that, he has no family ties with the industry, this is no easy feat.

John is featuring in two films on the marquees at the moment and both are as different as chalk and cheese. While one is BAABUL, a true-blue Bollywood multi-starrer about widow remarriage, the other is a rare travelogue into war-torn Afghanistan titled KABUL EXPRESS.

John is comfortable rubbing shoulders with mega stars like Salman, Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee as well as talented character actors like Arshad Warsi and Nana Patekar.

Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman have also had their share of success this year. But the norm that films featuring the Khans will be the biggest grosser of the year has been broken.

Box-office wise, Shah Rukh and Salman have not performed exceptionally this year. "DON - The Chase Begins" was Shah Rukh's calling card this year but it did not outshine all others. Salman's JAAN-E-MANN fell short of the competition.

Although Salman's BAABUL may still be a hit as it is a family oriented drama and such flicks usually take time to grow on audiences. The actor has, however, lost some of his box office draw this year.

Aamir with his policy of one project at a time will continue to be a chief attraction in the year ahead but for film trade investors investing in him is no longer a guarantee to success.

And now that Shah Rukh has signed on to do STAR's "Kaun Banega Crorepati", he will have less time for films.

Thankfully for Bollywood, a new set of stars is waiting in the wings.

lol what u said sounded more of a joke.....anywayz why cant hrithik b a superstar....this guy has always set new records...first of all which other actor ever won Best Debut and Best Actor the same year, Hrithik was the first to appear in Sci-fi movies like KMG and Krrish and what other actor or "Khan" can do that and which other actor can essay the role or Aryan as cool and hot as Hrithik...Hrithik is perect and like Bips said at GIFA...right now hrithik is the only actor who can lead bollywood and bsides hes the #1 actor of 2006 since he gave 2 back-to-back blockbusters....so hrithik can give all the Khans a good competition

I think with the new millenium, the Khans have become less dominant. Aamir was big in the 90's. Now he makes a movie every 3 years or so. SRK still sells but he has had his share of blunders with Aasoka, Pehali, and even Don getting mixed reviews. Salman had blockbuster hits in the 90s with MPK, HAHK, and HDDCS. Not so many in the 00s.

i think that the special thing about salman, amir and shahrukh is that all three of these khans have ruled bollywood together for so long which no other group of actors have ever done... they have ruled bollywood for so long all together that i think thats special in its own way, and even wen they r in their 40's they r still in the league as the best, even now ppl still luv all three of them, actors have to pass the khans to be considered stars... that itself is sumthing so special, which i think not many actors experience.... 👏 👏 👏 ......

these 3 khans have been ruling bollywood for a long time till now, and now wen they r in their 40's sum one gives them competition, thats not sumthing big, cuz they have been around for so long, that receiving competition from hrithik, abhi or john is not sumthing so huge, cuz these r actors of the new generation... they r rising stars, its not lyk amir, salman and shahrukh just reached stardom now and all of a sudden other actors r pulling them down... hrithik, abhishek and john r upcoming superstars, so one day or the other they will reach their high peaks also, but saying that they r defeating the khans is so childish... no matter wat khans have given bollywood sumthing new, and these three khans will always be big in bollywood no matter wat!

SRK's first movie that released was Deewana and that was a hit, all three of the khans had their first films as hits... SRK's deewana, salman's maine pyar kiya, and amir's qayamat se qayamat tak were all hits and they were their debut films.

Hrithik will be the first Superstar-Super actor with international appeal. He is a complete actor who even looks good and dances like a dream. Does not smoke, do rash driving or beat up his wife or have a reputation of Ghost directing.

It is after ages Hindi cinema got such an actor.
He has immense potential and range. Even in his small career, the portfolio he built is versatile, double roles, to terrorists to mentally challenged, diguises, Action Hero, Comicbook Superhero...........and now in future an Emperor..Hope he gets talented writer and directors who can use his untapped potential. This young man rocks!

u guys just watch wait and watch we will see who is the biggest and superstar forever in the begining of the year.

Khans are overrated.

Yes Bollywood has survived and will survive without them. They're all bigheaded and overhyped. Except Saif ali Khan, he's the most talented Khan.

Hrithik gave two blockbusters this year. He is the only one who WORKS for the role. I am not talking about growing moustache to fit a character. I am talking about the way he trained for Krrish, the way he did all the stunts for D2 and Krrish, the way he gets involved with the character.

He looks like an international model and has talents to match his looks. He will make it big in every movie industry because he is hardworking and has the drive and determination.

Also if the so called King Khan and other Khans (barring Saif he is truely talented) stop blowing their own trumpets and start working a bit harder, then yes I will take them seriously.

THERE ARE MANY LIKE HRITICK IN TV AND EVERYWHERE BUT THERE IS NOONE LIKE SHARUKH FIRST HE RULED ON TV AND THEN BOLLYWOOD WITHOUT ANY GODFATHER BUT WITH HIS DETERMINATION AND WORK HARD UNLIKE HRITICK WHOSE FATHER IS ALL BEHIND HIM AND GIVING HIM AND TRYING TO MAKING HIM SUPERSTAR.WHATEVER SHARUKH IS TODAY HE IS HIS OWN THAT WHAT MAKES A PERSON TRULY KING NOT SOME FATHER-MAKING-DESI-SUPER-HERO.
