I feel sad when someone who has lived and more importantly studied in India says they dont speak in Hindi and it made me think is Hindi still the national language ? and is it still being taught atleast in schools. I know I had mandatory hindi till the 10th std and today even after so many years ( passed SSC in 1988) am still so happy that atleast I can still manage to read hindi even if I am a little slow to read or maybe a little rusty with the colloquisms...but atleast I can still read and talk in Hindi. Then it made me wonder as to why so many states and ppl are averse to acknowledging Hindi as a national language? I know all states have their own regional language but even then why would someone not aknowledge the bond that all Indians feel and must share....from the east to the west and from the north to down south.....especially south needs to rediscover the national language. Jai Hind

Every National Language Has Its Own Importance , And This Importance Never Becomes Less. Atleast all of us Know to Speak English and many other Languages, But These Languages Never Take Place Of National Languages.
NATIONAL LANGUAGES ALWAYZ IN OUR HEARTS

well you see that is because hindi is not considered as a bond..

we are used to communicating in English..

I feel it is good enough to know your mother tongue..

If you try to force Hindi on somebody else( whose native tongue is not Hindi inspite of him being Indian,) he might not appreciate your gesture.. He is protective of his native tongue I suppose..

I suppose we are protective of our culture..

that's true. u dont become less of an indian if u dont know hindi. india's a diverse country. and um, even countries other than india have many people who cannot speak a word of their national language

I guess I am missing the point here...whats the defination of a national language? and what do u mean by saying that there arent enough hindus? also to be thankful that people still speak hindi...I guess u are right I should be thankful that someone atleast speaks it but it would be nice if there were more.....

Coming back to the topic:

Hindi is getting is due respect.Whether we are from North or South or East or West of India, learning Hindi is a necessity and so people learn it.Now English language decreased this necessity levels but still Hindi has its importance.,learning it and speaking it is definitely an added advantage.

cheers,
