i can understand both views but i - being in the uk can speak hindi ..n gujrati ...i think indians should kno it..after all it is a native language..all other countries are very into their languages i do think we should use more of our native language be it gujarati, hindi or any others in india as there is a diverse range and ..use english less!!! e.g. no need at home can speak in hindi, gujarati etc😳

There are many Indians who can't speak Hindi but speak in their mother tongue very well. Why would you or someone be sad if they say that they don't speak Hindi?

probably it doesn't.

1) The decision to make Hindi- the national language was disputed, remained unresolved and was forced upon some of the states.

2) The education system (not a vernacular medium school) in India lays more emphasis on English. even mother tongue takes the back seat. or as maya said, mother tongue is learnt along with english. Thus Hindi is either 2nd / even 3rd language for many.

3) Heard of unity in diversity? I think it's a myth.

This forum also demands English Only Posts. So Is Hindi getting the respect? is a mere rhetorical question.
