Chapter 13
Beware the Lady
Recap: "I am sorry for your wounded ego. But, whatever this is, get over it".
Just as her figure escaped the doorway, he caught her wrist in his palm. He did not know if he could trust his queen but he sure has hell could not leave her alone.
"I apologize. I said too much, I said it without thinking. You are suffering. I have noticed the three sets of alarm clocks. Your sleepless nights and running around in circles when I lay tucked away beneath the sheet layers of warmth. What troubles me is why you would consider me an outsider? I overanalyze things, I get that. Maybe he was joking with the Liz... Hell, forget what happened. Let's go. We can talk about Stanford later. Let's get there first. Kesh needs you".
Those words, that inch of remorse, a minute of empathy was all she needed. She broke down in his arms detailing the nights following the emergency.
"I am seeing things. Nightmares. There are blood splatters on my ivory coat. Numbing sensations. Dried tears. He is screaming in pain. My sunshine is fading away. I love him way too much to lose him. This. I. We must help him back to safety. Please".
"Yes, we are going there in official capacity. We shall present ourselves as the royal couple. The US diplomats will handle things much better from there. Justice must be served given how high the profile of the case is about to get".
Why did his words tense her nerves? Something was still unsaid, amiss. He could not pinpoint the change but, he knew they would never recover from this hole he dug.
"Sir, I do not want the reporters on my baby brother. He is the most important man in my life. Yes, before you. Before me. You are not inviting unwanted press junket when he is on sedatives".
Was this her actual reasoning? Rishabh did not dream of a second when he would be holding hands with the love of his life, questioning every word she spoke. Why this unwarranted mistrust?
"I am the king and you are the queen. I deal with foreign policy and you stand to my right waiving at the crowds. Your job is to smile at the cameras. I do my job just fine. I am sure you will do yours. As for Kesh, we are in the damn plane. My men are guarding his entire floor. He will be fine. Cry all you want but do not overstep your boundaries. I decide how this goes".
"I love you Rishabh but I love my brother more. I am putting my foot down. If I see as much as one flash in or around the hospital building, I walk over to the nearest women's shelter and take asylum. I will cry until the leader of the free world comes running down and shields me from my husband. If you think about harming Kesh, you are only doing it over my dead body".
Why was she so adamant about keeping the media away. He could not connect the dots much less deny his wife, what seemed like, her marital rights.
"Fine, if that is what you wish. Know that I love Kesh also. I do not want any harm to come to him and you should think twice before keeping secrets. I don't like lies and I don't like liars. I know the trouble with my mother is big. But, your troubles are my troubles. You do not keep things from me. Have I made myself clear?"
"Yes sir".
"No more fighting?"
"You have my word sir".
"King, you call me king".
"King"
