Saali—Aadhi ya poori gharwali?

Wives in Indian soaps now have their own sisters to deal with, as they do the souten act on them!

The present trend in television soaps is veering towards females usurping their own sisters' husbands. In other words, they do the souten act on their own siblings! In Saat Phere, Tara who cannot conceive, requests her sister Urvashi to become the surrogate mother to her husband Brijesh's child. But Tara is shocked to find out Urvashi has designs on her husband and is out to replace her position in Brijesh's life. Producer Sunjoy Wadhwa says, "These kind of situations are necessary to keep the track interesting. Obviously, the viewers want to know who wins and how." According to Ashlesha Sawant who plays Tara, "In smaller cities where joint family is the norm, I guess this kind of a thing happens. But not among the educated as they would prefer to adopt a child."
Kasamh Se, revolves around three sisters where the elder one Bani essayed by Prachi Desai, is the responsible one. Of late, the track shows the middle sister Pia falling in love with Bani's husband Jai to the extent of seducing him and is now pregnant with his child. Prachi opines, "This kind of a situation does take place in real life, especially where there are many sisters. The middle daughter is always the neglected one and she vies for attention." Earlier too, viewers have witnessed similar situations. For instance, in Sony's Kkusum, step-sisters Kumud and Kali fall in love with the same guy Garv. Chetan Hansraj, who played Garv avers, "I am sure it happens, especially when they are step-sisters, there is rivalry and it is not uncommon to snatch the others' love."
In Sahara One's Solahh Singaar , Alaknanda is in love with Shantano but marries his brother Kumar to fulfill the death wish of her lover's father. Mrinal Kulkarni, who plays Alaknanda says, "Tying the knot with your lover's brother is not unusual, and in a small town like Banares, where tradition rules and women are not advanced, it happens."Well, as long as the audience laps it up, and the TRPs keep soaring, our serials will have a field day dishing out unfaithful husbands and sly saalis. After all, it is a known fact that saali hai aadhi gharwaali!
