"Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" marks the coming together of Ranbir+Dharma Productions+Ayan Mukherjee after the very much loved film "Wake Up Sid". For this youthful rom-com flick, Pritam takes the mantle of the music director who has always given great music for Ranbir Kapoor. Lyrics have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Kumaar. The three songs promos currently on Air are instant chartbusters which further accentuates our expectations from this album. The buzz is already huge, so let's find out how the entire album turns out
Before listening to the 1st song in the album that goes"Badtameez Dil", I would request you all to put your dancing shoes on ! This quintessential Party number starts with trumpets and drum beats, sung by Benny Dayal (Tu Hi Toh Meri Dost Hai fame) this one's a highly additive number that is full on energy! The lyrics ———->
"Paan mein pudeena dekhaa, naak ka nageena dekhaa, Chikni chameli dekhi, chiknaa kaminaa dekhaa"
are quite whacky & senseless, but that's precisely its meant to be. Benny's energetic singing with fast beats has already made this song an instant hit with masses & classes alike. That's a dhamakedaar beginning(4/5).
The next song "Balam Pichkari" is a fusion of Indian & Western music. It starts off as a folk song with tablas playing around but as you go 21secs into song it changes gears. Sung by Vishal Dadlani & Shalmani Kholgade who rose to fame with 'Main pareshan' seems apt choice for this number. Special mention to the Chorus that elevates this track. The song, though made for the festivities of HOLI, will rule the discotheques for the next few months. Also, after "Holi Khele Ragubeera" from Baghban; there were no other tracks dedicated to HOLI. Come 2014 and after years you will 'see' people 'dancing' away to this fabulous high octane number on HOLI (4/5)
After ROCKSTAR, how can you not have Mohit Chauhan singing for Ranbir? The next song "Ilahi" sung by Mohit is a number that is heavily guitar based. This is quite different from the 1st two songs in the album. A happy go lucky song that describes the protagonist's views about life, it perhaps is the introductory song for Ranbir. With children singing the chorus part, this is a likeable number
"Ilahi" has a reprise version crooned by Arijit Singh with same beats and guitar arrangements, if one has to choose amongst these two, Mohit's version has an upper hand due to the fact that after Rockstar he has become Ranbir's 'voice' (3.25/5)
Now the album goes into the melody route with the song "Kabira". There are two versions of this song. Both versions are different.
1st version sung by Tochi Raina & Rekha Bharadwaj has the Sufiyana touch with guitar and drum beats. Their sublime vocals lifts the mood and feel of the song. A delight to listen !
The other version is sung by latest singing sensation Arijit Singh & Harshdeep Kaur (Katiyan Karun fame) has Punjabi flavour and Indian musical arrangements that makes 2nd version an absolute delight. A situational song, the lyrics & music hints at a wedding scenario. This one's my favourite song in the album. The lyrics also deserve a special mention in this song. Both the versions are good (4.5/5)
With "Dilliwali Girlfriend", the album again takes the party mode. This 'desi' bhangra based number is fused with electronic musical arrangements. Sung by Arijit Singh & Sunidhi, the song though an ordinary composition, never loses its tempo with thumping beats and energetic singing. The song promo is on Air & has already caught the fancy of youths. (3.5/5)
The melody makes a comeback with "Subhanallah" which has vocals from Indian Idol season 5 winner Sreeram & Shilpa Rao. This romantic song is very easy on ears with Sreeram's fresh sounding soothing voice and some wonderfully written lines by Amitabh Bhattacharya. A love-duet that describes the feeling of falling in love for the 1st time. Sweet song. (3.75/5)
The last song in the album "Ghagra" is picturised on Madhuri Dixit & Ranbir. Sung by Rekha Bharadwaj & Vishal Dadlani is folksy track which has some very interesting use of Tablas & harmonium. The lyrics are just plain OK ! This song does not gives you feel of playing it on a repeat mode. As a standalone song, it sounded average to me. May be the video can be a game changer. But I feel the 'Queen of Dance' Madhuri Dixit deserved a better track. (2.5/5)
To close the review, the album doles out the songs according to the theme of the film and it has the potential to attract music lovers across the length & breadth. Pritam makes a perfect balance between dance numbers & melody and once again justifies his innate talent. This album will be amongst biggest hit musically for the 1st half of the year as the three song promos on Air have already done the job. Go Grab the album, worth a listen !!!
