Well, as always, here I am with the review after just finished watching this week's action-packed episode of Supernatural - The Great Escapist.
It's a Ben Edlund episode so I had great expectations. *Nerd Alert* That reminds me of Charles Dickens "Great Expectations." Pretty interesting book if you haven't read it. Anyway, back to the point, so I guess mostly, Edlund didn't let me down. It did seem like a lot happened in the 43 minutes. Edlund bravely answered many of the questions that were hanging in the air since last few episodes. Like what happened to Kevin? Where's Cas with the angel tablet? What's up with Naomi? Though Naomi's intentions are still largely left to speculation, we got pretty good answers for the former two questions.
Starting with the beginning, I right away knew something was wrong when "Sam" and "Dean" talked to Kevin. Especially Sam gave it away. We just know them too well, don't we? 😳
The way Dean always takes care of his "little big man" never ceases to warm my heart. It's like what he had said seasons ago, it's job.. it's one job. Even John didn't need to tell him, he always knew that Sammy was, is and will be his responsibility. In more ways than one, Dean has been more of a father to Sam than John. And as with all parents, they never stop caring, do they? Doesn't matter if their kid's a year old or a few decades old, their worries never end.
Some pretty interesting (and somewhat funny) conversation there:
Dean: Want me to do the whole air playing thing with the spoon (that made me go awww).
Sam: Where did you get that?
Dean: When you started throwing off heat waves. 😆 (The issue is of course very serious, it's just Dean's language that cracks me up).
Sam: I'm not going to be okay until we start moving again... until I can start the third trial.
Dean: Trial? I wouldn't let you start a moped. (Again, the way Dean says it and what he says is just funny 😆).
Kevin's video left me emotional too, even though I knew he wasn't dead. The way Dean lashed out when the video finished broke my heart again.
Okay so the whole angels mess. Can I say that I hate the Supernatural angels more than the demons? How brutal of them to kill everyone in that restaurant. And how ruthlessly Naomi snapped the woman's neck. Outside of the Supernatural mythology, I do believe in angels but for me, they are always the protective kind. Certainly not like Naomi. It's like angels and demons are equally brutal, just worried about themselves.. humans can die in the process. Doesn't matter. The reason I hate the angels more because it was their job to look after humans. Demons were always there to make sure that the humans went stray and suffered. But just because angels' father left, they thought that making humans suffer for it is the best solution... regardless of the loving way God made them.
Cas's showdown with Naomi, again - Brilliant. Love Cas's courage. Even though he's an angel, he always does do what he believes is right. Even Naomi said that in disdain, he never would do anything he thought was wrong. "In the words of a good friend, bite me!" This made me fall in love with Cas all over again.
Can I just say...Crowley playing Dean would be awesome?!! Could the writers please give us a sequence where this does happen. 😳😆
And isn't the drunk Sam so frickin' adorable?! 😳 I've said it before and I'm saying it again, I love the scenes when Sam's drunk or high on meds 😆 The way he talks and the things he remembers is just too cute! Donkey rides 🤣
Did you notice how careful Dean was when he and Sam were walking down the hallway, looking for Metatron? He kept his hands in the air, always keeping an eye on Sam, wanting to support him if in case he needed it. No matter how many times I say it, it's just not enough. Jensen Ackles is one brilliant actor. The guy deserves an Oscar, Emmy and every single award they have out there.
This episode had several points when my heart broke into several tiny pieces... Sam and his pain about being unpure with the the demon blood was one of those moments. Jared Padalecki was brilliant as usual. The way he related Sam's pain to the audience was nothing short of perfection. The trials purifying him... that's what I thought. That's what I first mentioned when Sam became the chosen one to do the trials. THIS is why Sam needed to do the trials. Even though Dean and Sam are working as a team, Sam is the one who has to physically do them for the this very reason... he was the chosen one by the demons to end the world so it's only karmic justice that he shuts the Earth's door on these 'sonsofbitches.'
Sam: You haven't heard of us? What kind of an angel are you? We are the frickin' Winchesters! Okay, that cracked me up. 😆 Again, of course, it's in the middle of a very serious conversation and revelations, but I just thought it was rather cute because the way he said it sounded like a celebrity throwing a tantrum when someone didn't recognize them 😆
Kevin's "screw you" to Crowley made me the biggest fan of him. LOVED his attitude. That was awesome!
It was interesting the way the whole Lucifer-Michael story was explained through Metatron. After seasons, they're tying the loose ends. That's what I love about Ben Edlund, his writing is flawless.
Sam and Dean leashing out to Metatron was another highlight of the episode... it's amazing how it's actually the boys who are doing the work that was supposed to be done by the angels... looking after the prophets, saving people, helping them. The entire time, I was 'go tell him, boys!"
"It's your choice. That's what it's all been about. The choices your kind make. But you're gonna have to weigh that choice. Ask yourself, what is it going to take to do this. And what will the world be like after it's done." Even Jeremy Carver talked about this in his latest interview. This seems to be the theme of the last few episodes. Now what will the world be like after it's done, that's a no-brainer. How could the world not be a better place without the demons? BUT what is it going to take to do this? That's a different question all together... Do you mean it's foreshadowing on maybe Sam having to die to do this? And that's when Dean would decide that maybe it's not worth closing the gates of hell if he has to lose his little brother in the process? The Sacrifice, which is the finale episode, is I'm sure all about this. What are you willing to sacrifice to do something?
The third trial is to cure a demon?! Seriously?! This is getting more and more absurd! What does it mean to cure a demon anyway? Is it what Ruby pretended way back? Like actually remembering what it was like to be a human and repenting? Is Crowley going to be that demon? We really don't know any other demon that well... Meg's dead 😠And it would be sorta impact-less if they just choose a random demon to cure. It's gotta be a demon who's had a history with the Winchesters... Well, I guess we'll see about that in the last 2 episodes of the season. I can't belie we are so close to the end.
"But we're heading somewhere... The end." These words of Sam hit me hard... he didn't just mean it for the boys but for us too... Season 8 is almost ending... we're reading the THE END. :(
And the boys finally find Cas. What a cliffhanger to finally leave us with. So I, for one, can't wait to see the next episode!
BTW, was it just me or was there more action in this episode than we got in the entire season? Seriously, crazy twists and turns and all. Nevertheless, I'm happy that Kevin's alive, Cas and the boys are reunited, and Crowley's definitely freaking out. Let's see what happens now.
I, for one, would really enjoy a demons vs. angels showdown. Let both evil sides destroy each other.
Well, IF SPNers, this is it from me. Please do leave your comments, love discussing the episodes.
