See below. This is what I had to say on Sony before in that previously discussed Meta Topic. Sony still maintains the class while Colors fell down by its own standards and its shows soaps like Uttaran and SSK

FQ,
Your question to PGM about Sony Shows. Sony Channel always wanted to be different from STAR and ZEE in its content. That's why their content is one of the most progressive on Indian Soap Arena.
This channel along with Colors is where I feel that their executives go by a Rulebook based on the Org' s VISION.

Sony even today, keeps some shows like CID, Adalat in its portfolio. It is the same reason why of all EKTA heroines, Gauri of Kutumb was the one lead with whom we all can relate. I still love her character. Loveable without going deep into FANDOM, FEMINISM, TRADITIONS etc etc. She is a character who evolves herself with time well-within her acceptable and irritable flaws. She makes it believe that her husband Pratham is not a prop, but her support and likewise for Pratham, Gauri makes it all meaningful. Now that is not a regressive soap. It had the content to please the youngsters, middle-aged.
I feel Sony's Vision has a noble attitude towards Art unlike Star or Zee. They are the cheapest sort, trading class without any sophistication or knowledge of what ART means.

However, sad it is that both Sony and Colors are being forced to follow-numbers driven business economics.

9L PER episode...the ballu scene was 24L

ps: if ritu deora is the designer...y does the rolling title say ZARA??

Zara Studios was engaged in the earlier months from June to September for RK's costumes exclusively to promote his Superstar Image.

Later on they changed to regular ones fitting Nautanki's budget.

The current Cast and Crew engaged are these. That is my info from my blog (starting from May Launch to Current Creative Team. You will see the stylists and Costume Designer Name.

As to 9 lacs per episode...it is because, its setting is quite different from regular Saas Bahu Serials. You don't need a Vanity Van, Studio Equipment, Designs changes for Shooting scenes requirement...and also action scenes in other Saas Bahu serials.

Here you see, the set is same place, but they keep changing one or the other thing...like the latest addition is the Red Mask like Structure...and so on and so forth...

Look at the Hawa Hawaii song and actual car driving scene when RK was talking to Madhu. You can see road moving as he talks to MAdhu.

Really nice and worth reading article on Rishbala love hate realation
Nice article on MB
http://www.fuzionproductions.com/love-its-complexities-madhubala-ek-ishq-ek-junoon/

Love is strange, love is weird and love is complex; but yet this simple four letter word has feelings and emotions which fills the heart with happiness . There are times when love can make one act differently. Lost in love or love which is hidden and expressed in a different emotion, often pertaining to anger is usually strange love. The emotion of love exists even when love is expressed by the way of showing care or by shouting in anger . Love is purely present without means of normal expression, that people seek for. It's simply expressed differently by different individuals. Nautanki Films popular television soap, 'Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon' on Viacom 18 Colors is the show where the emotion of love is underway wrapped within different shades of expression, but yet the love remains buried deep down in the hearts of the lead protagonists of the show.

The story of Madhubala depicts the dramatic feelings of obsessive love and hate which engulfs superstar Rishabh Kundra (Vivian Dsena) and a common girl, Madhubala Shamsher Malik. The story had showcased RK and Madhubala's transition from hate to love, but with some taste of revenge. Audiences and Madhu received the shocking truth of Rishabh's revenge which was fulfilled as he trapped Madhu within the web of his fake love. Viewers also witnessed Madhubala fighting back and giving superstar 'RK' the deserving fruits for his egoistic deeds. The viewers also witnessed the emotions of jealousy, hurt and anger, along with confusion, pain, tears and guilt which was actually hidden within the hearts of Rishabh and Madhu. All this has kept the interest of the viewers intact.

It is said that you realize a person's importance in your life only when you are at the verge of loosing them. True to this, the audiences also witnessed Rishabh's jealousy track when he realized that he might be loosing Madhubala forever to somebody else. Though Rishabh himself distanced himself from Madhu, currently he is at phase where he does not want to loose her. The way Rishabh puts it, is he has 'Haq' or 'Right' on Madhubala, though he may not voice his love for his wife, but it is the emotion of love which is making him react this way. At the end of the day it is his possessiveness, his love for his beloved which has made him force Madhu to come back to his home. Many may disagree saying that if it is love Rishabh would never keep her tied to him forcibly and rather set her free but it is indeed love. Rishabh is expressing his love in a rather weird way, but if it was not love then superstar Rishabh Kundra would never go to different depths to woo Madhu and to make her smile. Whether it is Rishabh trying to feed her with food or whether it was him leaving all his superstar inhibitions and dancing on the road around his wife just to woo her.

On the other hand there is Madhubala who loves Rishabh but was hurt by him.Yet she continues to love him but is not willing to express the love she feels for her husband, rather she has masked it with the emotion of indifference. Whether it is anger or indifference in whatever way the love of Rishabh and Madhu is expressed, the love they feel for each other comes as clean as the purest forms of filtered water where their eyes speak volumes of the love they have withheld in their hearts for each other.

Love and Hate are the two sides of the same coin, they say that when you love someone you love them with all your heart and when you hate the person you love, you hate them with the very same heart. The emotion of love and hate reside in one's heart and the minds act based on the emotion from the heart. Rishabh and Madhu's love and hate story currently depicts the confusion of the past and a better tomorrow calling the two of them. If only the two of them leave behind their past, they can build a life together. The to and fro between the emotions of love and hate which Rishabh and Madhubala are undergoing is really entertaining for the viewers. True to the tagline of the soap, 'Ek Ishq Ek Junoon', the phase 'Ishq' was seen earlier but it crumbled when Rishabh's real revenge motive was out in the open and now currently it seems like it is the phase of 'Junoon' in love for the two of them, where they can go to any extent to win the other back. This phase of 'Junoon' comes as a refreshing change for the ardent followers of Madhubala.

'Sometimes I Hate You..Sometimes I Love You..But At The End Of The Day My Existence Is An Empty Soul Without You' – Surya Ravi

The quote I have written above depicts Rishabh and Madhubala's situation perfectly well, where they can hate each other or love each other but without the other's existence in life, their life is meaningless and incomplete. Love is a emotion such that subtracting it from the heart is never possible and though Madhu or Rishabh might say they hate each other, but the love always remains. We believe that sooner or later Rishabh will realize the mistakes of his past and win over his beloved Madhu, his wife right-royally, it might take time but it will happen. When and how only time will tell..

For now the audiences can sit back and enjoy 'The Junoon and Indifference' phase in Rishabh Kundra and Madhubala Rishabh Kundra's lives.

Don't forget to watch 'Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon'; Monday to Friday at 8:30 PM, only on Viacom 18 Colors.

Shri,

I thought this could be meta discussion related so I am responding to your latest post on EDT regarding Madhu character here.

I am in agreement with your post about Madhu character's growth in this serial. This is not really bashing Madhu but we as viewers trying to understand why is it the case.
We want her character to grow in some sense based on the experiences that she has gone through. That makes logical sense to all of us. The characters around her are getting more affected (RK, Sultan, Aryan, Padmini, Radha, Dipail, Bittuji) and showing change/growth in their behavior from before. Madhu however is like a guiding light which shines with the same intensity on all the travellers here. It neither dims nor becomes intense. It seems to be constant, steady.
I have not seen any of DD's or VD's earlier work so not in the position to comment on it. If we as viewers are feeling this, is the creative team not aware of it? What is their purpose in keeping this character constant through out. Is it actor's fault for not enriching this character further or does the story demand that she remains relatively stagnant and let the rest of those around her (including us 😆) go crazy, grow in their understanding and feel the effect of being in her vicinity.

Is she supposed to be the storyteller here which is why she cannot really change but will make others change/grow as the story unfolds further?

Interesting discussion... If nothing else comes out it, I will say it is helping me think and look at things beyond what meets the eye.

Thanks as usual to you for making me think.

SAVING A META TOPIC

What could be the winning strategy of a winning soap ?
Question Tabled by river 123

Background:
SD speculated heroine track, which many suggested is not a good TRP gainer track

River,

Very good question. This is NOT regressive or Progressive Track discussion. As that discussion really sickens me in my stomach. Even in US, we have shows like Criminal Intentions with Detectives, Police, Attorneys etc etc...and yet they are soaps. Everyone one of us know the type of detection is highly questionable and BS...and yet we watch them for kicks.

So , even India needs to come out of the mindset that only Saas Bahu show formats are winning. People can sell a lot as long as shows provide Entertainment and Inspiration. One needs to be inspired by characters to watch them again. There should be that HOPE in that character which recalls audience back. And likewise there should be that staple entertainment that makes you enjoy. And lets not forget...everyone likes to see DRAMA...and not for months...but periodic dramatic tracks that can let you forget entertainment and inspiration for a while...until the climax ...then viewers as they let loose their tension, they look for reliefs...which means filler tracks or pure slap stick entertainment.

Its always about build-up - interest - climax - catharsis - relief - arrest - new build-up - interest ...and it goes on

And there is never hard and fast type story that sells. Sorry to say...but being Indian, I know how we poorly think of our creative skills and also how low we guage our audience's intelligence.

It sickens me to hear that we need to be fed Saas Bahu and husband sitting on sofas and taking to women...just to get TRPs. There was a good way of doing it back in Doordarshan days and even in Literature. What does it take to be just bold and be enterprising about any idea.

Why people should be so afraid of being different ? afraid to experiment ? Ofcourse ...

There is BUSINESS ANGLE to this,
and There is CREATIVE ANGLE to this.

Numbers vs Aesthetics

  • In TV numbers matter more and aesthetics are just tools to win numbers
  • In Films numbers are dependent on Aesthetics

"I think the heroine track will happen for sure but not till the CVs exhaust all other possible tracks. Because there would be hardly anything left after that. Or the CVs will use the heroine track prematurely in case the TRPs drop alarmingly. Actually they have two major TRP booster tracks up their sleeves - Madhu-RK's suhaagraat and heroine track. They will keep putting off both for as long as possible.

As for the TRP audience, MEIEJ's audience does not consist of the regular soap watchers. It is mostly big-cities based with a mix of young and old. The kind who enjoy the complexities of relationships. For eg. my mother does not watch MB as she finds it too confusing. She is a regular soap watcher and her favourite show is Diya Aur Baati Hum. And I don't watch any serial except MBEIEJ.

Also, nobody will mind the heroine track if Madhu and RK are working together and we get to see their daily spats on the sets - like the 3-day challenge track which got 3.9 TRP. It will surely not be about Madhubala's career graph and how she struggles to reach the top."

More than agree with you on the points you made, so am not re-quoting the entire post. I'm just putting in some of my additional thoughts. I think TV is a particularly hard medium, especially when compared to film. The continuous need to repeat the "build-up - interest - climax - catharsis - relief - arrest" cycle that you talked about., on a consistent and long term basis.

Its great for a show to be different (indeed, that is the reason why we all watch MB) and I don't think a show needs to be in the saas-bahu mold to be successful. I think that what I was thinking about, was something along the lines of core values that underly a show. Love, trust, hope, relationships, family. I'll draw an analogy to Greys Anatomy (since it seems to be one of GH's favorites!) The show is twisty, drama filled, yet the sense that I get when I watch it (which I don't do so much of these days) is that under all the craziness and twists and turns that the CVs churn out, there is a consistently enduring respect for friendships and relationships (even if the DNA of those relationships change over time.)

And then going back to the business perspective, TRP's are a quantitative measure of audience satisfaction with the show. TRPs matter, because that is what drives the revenues for the show, pays the salaries of everyone who works on it, and ensures quality production values.

River,

And I believe that you would agree to it that...MEIEJ starts with absolute madness and craziness and ends that track in a way audience is satisfied.

Its just that the show works on destructive or deducive logic rather constructive plot.

Here every character is mad and wrong, but you cannot discard them. You have to accept them. And how do you accept them as those characters mutually break each other from their moulds.

In so far, they have had success...its just that we need to keep patience.

GA that you talk about...its is Preet's fav show as well. And she said when CVs changed, they never cared for audience sentiments and showed what they want.

Thing is on TV...we don't pay. So we don''t get to judge. We have only two choices. We remain dumb and idiot and watch or we refuse to remain dumb and idiot and switch to something else.

And the other points from CV's creative and business angle, you already mentioned.

All they have to do is concentrate when they want to...keep running it...let people talk about ot positively or negatively, which means audience in interested ...and come back when they have to sit and run the story.

We discuss here and think the whole world is behaving emotional fools like us. Hell no!!! No one analyses a TV show this much as we do.

Then why I am writing ? I had time, I wanted to get back into writing, analysing, making friends and undertand the survival of a new PH, a new show and creatives. All the shows I watched since end of 2011 - DABH, HD, AB and now MEIEJ...I have seen for same analytical reasons. The PH and the storywriter cum Producer attracted me in all four cases...as how the producer and creative in him/her manages to manage the conflict between business and creativity. I am sure it is not at all easy. I saw a big failure in Village Roadshows - Rakesh Paswan as he exhausted his story just in 4 months. And surprisingly ST of Nautanki as Fiction Head did manage Rakesh Paswan for his Colors and Imagine shows. And yet...the stories, the concepts by these writers is gripping and INSPIRING enough to have attracted me. I don't think I can be easily pleased one in the audience.

ETA:
All the four shows have won awards in one or the other category 😉 😃 😆 That's my choice...there should be something inspiring and imaginative.

absolutely ! no one analyzes TV this much. it's just an illusion that only saas bahu drama sells..at some point, everyone thought that only Ekta kapoor style of story telling sells...then it reached a stagnation point and people came up with different concepts which were well accepted by the audience ! like this serial Bidai broke the Ekta kapoor tyranny..new shows on colors like Balika Vadhu, na aana is des (although i was never a fan of these shows) , but they carried a social message with them and audiences liked it..the current flavor of the season are romantic stories , simple girl and arrogant rich man and diff. kind of stories spun around them..some saas bahu family drama , some thrillers like MB, some light hearted ones like is pyar ko kya naam doon..

Star plus and Sony tried something different and they succeeded..the reason why saas bahu soaps like DABH are successful is that it maintained the positive element in it's story..it's well balanced..if there is bhabho, sandhya gives a tough competition ..the heroines are no longer shown as doormats...Veera was not a regular saas bahu soap, yet it's a success..Bade ache lagte hain and Chanchan are breezy kinds ...TG Ekta kapoor rejected the sadist kind of story telling..it's not getting good TRP's but it's up and running..better than these ultimate drag stories of Colors like Uttaran and SSK ..

the only problem with the possible future plot which you mentioned Shri, is that for a long long period, they will have to show RK in a negative light ..the story will get sadist (nothing new with the colors shows) ..why will the audience be glued to MB if they only get to watch rona dhona? RK pulling Madhu in Bollywood and both working together will be the best option (since Feb i'm saying this) but for that, they need to bring RK to a point where he's bearable and not portrayed as a black character but a gray character..

PS which r these shows? AB and HD?😕

Interesting discussion. I have loads to say bt no time. Just want to add that I keep gauging my mom's reactions to MB. She watches serials, and she is also not exactly TRP audience, in the sense she switches off if they have festivals, illogical tracks and all. She is still continuing to watch MB and is actually intrigued by RK, Madhu's way of dealing with him.

So also I mentioned separately in a PM that my house help also watches MB and discusses it everyday with my mom😆. So television audiences are changing, MB appeals to a wide spectrum of people, its craziness is actually a novelty. And like SD says, the tracks tie in to make sense, a few months later so everybody is relieved😉
We are crazily involved that is our problem 😆...

yes, i was surprised to see that my mom watches MB ! 😲 it was a shocker for me bec. she's too much fed up with the television..my dad only watches tarak mehta..he's too repulsive about all these shows...this time when we met, i asked her whether she finds MB illogical and weird ?? she said "all the soaps are like that , what's the difference"? she said she's watching MB from a long time , it's just that she's free during 8-9 so she only watches BV and MB...therez something in it which intrigues the audience otherwise my mom and MB 😆..

Agree with both. There is something about MB which attracts viewers across ages, classes and social strata. The 10am slot is time for my daily helps to line up before the TV with their chai-nashta. They finish their work in such a manner that they get to catch the show. I love to watch their reactions ... they react the most to RK and get disgusted with Sultan. I've observed everyone from kids to the elderly hooked to this show ... even when what is being shown is disgusting.
