TV actors sweat it out with long work hours

Fame comes at a price, at least for TV actors. Even though they're paid well, a common grouse is that they have to sweat it out too often thanks to the long work hours. This has driven many actors to even quit their shows. 'This is how the TV industry works, and there is nothing that can be done to sort this out', some say, who've come to terms with this work culture, but actor Barun Sobti, who recently quit 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon' for this very reason, doesn't take things lying down. He recently said, "There is a labour law in the country which allows you to work for 45 hours a week, but TV actors, specially the lead actors, on an average, work close to 84 hours a week. I think there should be strict labour laws in the country." But why such long hours when the duration of the episode that's finally aired is just 15-20 minutes? Here's what lawyers and the industrywallahs have to say.

Labour laws don't cover TV actors
While Barun might be seeking stricter labour laws for TV actors, the fact is that they don't cover them. Says Anurag Tomar, a lawyer at the Supreme Court, "The Industrial Disputes Act doesn't cover TV actors. Drivers, skilled and unskilled labourers are covered under the act. TV actors and the producers don't share the relationship of an employee and employer. The actors work on a contractual basis and are not on the permanent payroll of the makers. If they have to sue the makers for any damages, they can do so under the civil law."

Hasan Anzar, lawyer at ANZ Lawz , a law firm in the capital, agrees, "In their case, the agreement or contract defines the relationship. The actors can approach civil courts for the addressal of their grievances provided their contracts don't mention the fact that they are required to put in these many hours at work,or for payment issues. These contracts are personal in nature."

With daily production there are bound to be issues
Industry people say that it's a case of 'what cannot be cured, must be endured.' Says Jay Soni, who's playing the lead in Sanskaar - Dharohar Apnon Ki, "At times, it so happens that there is an important twist in the show, and you have to spend long hours shooting for it. An actor usually spends 20 hours a day at work, with only four hours of sleep. Out of these 20 hours, 12 hours are reserved for shooting, around four hours go in commuting, and our job requires us to be fit, so we can't afford to miss the gym. But the industry functions on the mantra 'the show must go on'."

Shashi Mittal, producer of Diya Aur Baati Hum and Punar Vivah, says,"We have to churn out episodes daily. Writing, shooting... everything is going on simultaneously. There is nothing that can be done to solve this issue. The making of a TV show is just like a marriage where 100 people are involved in various things and there are bound to be issues."

Technology is to blame
While technology has made life easier for most of us, it has made the lives of TV actors tougher, as they have to shoot for the same scene from different angles. Ankit Gera, of Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, explains, "Technology is also to blame. There are several angles which are taken for a single scene. Plus, if you have a mahaepisode that is airing on a weekend, then your entire bank of episodes gets over. There have been instances when for Monday's episode, we have shot on Sunday, and even in the morning of the day the actual episode has to be aired."

His views are endorsed by Pratyusha Banerjee, who recently quit Balika Vadhu owing to her mother's and her own ill health. "You don't have a personal life. Retakes, various camera angles and other things take up a lot of your time. And if there are special episodes, then automatically your shoot timings increase."

Lack of script bank
"The lack of a script bank makes the job hectic. If the script bank is strong, the workload of every single person will be reduced. For any track, you have to get a go-ahead from the channel. This process involves a lot of meetings and to and fro. And there have been instances when you have to suddenly change tracks because your current track isn't getting you TRPs," informs Sudhir Sharma, producer of Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha.

The situation is getting better now
TV actors might be putting in long working hours, but people from the industry feel that the situation is actually improving. "Some time back, the situation on every TV set was really bad. Actors were shooting for 30 hours at a stretch. But when CINTAA (Cine and TV stars Association) passed a rule stating that no TV actor will work for more than 12 hours a day, the situation changed drastically," opines Sharma.

Contracts mention working hours
Industry insiders say that the contracts usually state that the actor has to put in 12 hours of work every day for the TV show, and that if they work extra, they will be paid overtime as well. The pressure on lead actors is more as compared to second leads or supporting actors as they are present in almost every second frame.

Why only Salwar Kameez/Anarkali/Sarees for Madhu?

This topic has sprung in my mind due to my general disgust for the awful anarkali DD was wearing this entire last week; and a comment someone made in EDT that while Trishna wears western outfits Madhu doesn't.

Pardon me if this has been discussed before in this thread or elsewhere.

The only other Indian soaps I've watched are IPKKND and BALH - in all three (these two and MEIEJ), the heroine is always dressed in salwar kameez or saree. Anything else is an aberration - heroine is drunk or it's a dream or even if she wears a western outfit she's very uncomfortable in it. Others in the serial wear western outfits - the vamp, friends of the heroine etc. I've seen the same trend in the promos of other serials that I catch.

Why this dichotomy? Is it ingrained in TV land that the "susanskrit" heroine must be always clad head to toe in Indian clothes? Are our TV makers so regressive? Or, do they think their audiences are that conservative?

In India today, I see young women even in smaller towns and villages sport jeans. In big cities, it is common for teenage girls to walk around in capris or shorts. Western clothes are the default outfit for young people, especially those of the upper middle class, but even the lower "aspiring" classes sport them without drawing comment.

What will it take for TV to catch up??

In the Sony shows, the female characters do wear jeans/t-shirts/kurtas etc as well as traditional outfits. In Sab TV also I think they show women wearing modern clothes.

By female characters, I mean the lead as well as the side characters.

MAKE-UP, HAIR-STYLING and COSTUMES

Discussed in Media Articles and Future Track Discussion

Reg Madhu's Make-Up, Hair-styling and Dresses

Make-up
DD is so beautiful that light make-up accentuates her beauty.
So i don't want heavy eye-make up and garish lip colors and rouges that are not blending in with her face color

Worse make-up for DD was on two days for me
  • Post Marriage first Day in that yellow-green designer dress. Her rouge is badly done that it keeps showing an orange tinge which actually looks like a binge...shining oily mess on her face...and eye shadow making her look as if she suddenly got transported from being Chawl girl to being the Queen Cleopatra. Prior to bottle-breaking scene, when Madhu gives her lecture to RK, I ended up looking at her make-up, more than anything.
  • Karwa Chouth Day - the red garish dress with Red lip color on those heavy duty botoxed lips, and heavy eye-make up. I needed to tell my mind, don't look at her make-up, just imagine a much more simpler Madhu and go with the flow.

Hair-Styling
How come every other TV female actress hair style is better than DD's. How is it even possible ?

What is immensely wrong about her hair style, in every style, she bundles in the hair in front be it is braided or left open in straight or ponied in curls.

God! I so wish, DD's fetish with this habit is fixed permanently in JDJ. There, the marks do get of dance is not danced with abandon forgetting what happens to your hair. So I am all up for DD participating in JDJ to to have her fix her hair-styling issues. I wanna see what different hair-styles she can really go for, without touching the hair while dancing and without bundling the hair onto one side of her right shoulder. I am sick of that one-sided bundling of her hair, 🤢

Costumes & Dressing
Showing her back and covering her Front...that is her trademark when she is in RK Mansion
Or wear simple kurtas as night dresses or when living in Chawl as Simple Girl
Sarees - dresses like she is dolled up for a party.

Do DD's constume designers, even know that she can be dressed up in Georgettes and Chiffons minus the garish, laces and sequin type shimmers over god knows what material is that...wish I could extend my hands into the TV and feel the texture of the saree and see what material it is made of !! 🤢

If they do not know...I will give an idea...Go look at Kajol's sarees. Simple and Elegant and never garish.

Or better...here take a look at this song, check Sridevi's chiffons. How classy they are. The blouse could be amended to suit DD's preference.

Go to any good store...you can get these high-end chiffons. You don't even have to find them in Designer Boutique stores. You can find them in any Wholesale markets of Mumbai and Delhi...anywhere.

tere mere honton pe meethe meethe geet mitwa HD 1080p ( chandni ) - Sridevi changes 5 sarees.

@Shri,
Agree 110%. DD is a natural beauty and its a shame her makeup clashes with her looks sometimes. I checked out her previous show, and her makeup was much better done there. She looked prettier.
I do wish they would focus on the details a little more. Maybe they are saving all that for the heroine track?😉 Like: OMG, look how beautiful RK's wife actually is!! Gasp!!
Sometimes, I think Padmini looks younger and her makeup is better done. Only sometimes though.

Awesome post shiri and agree with you being a DD fan i always have these complains from Geet days i hope in JDJ her stylist and she herself tc of these things😊

Shri, agreed, she is a very beautiful woman. Too bad the makeup seems to detract from her beauty, rather than enhance it. Remember that interview that she and VD did recently - she was truly looking quite lovely.

And yes, hopefully the hair touching fetish will be cured in JDJ (incidentally, how long does that run, and wonder how that is going to impact her screen time on MB)

Outfits, they can certainly do better. The Karwa Chauth outfit - if I'm not mistaken, it's the same red one that was used in IPKKND. I quite liked it then, just the way it was draped in MB wasn't great. Her sarees aren't great - seem more garish than classy. I can understand RK rejecting all of those for the sangeet! BTW full disclosure - I loved both the studio KC saree, and well as the unwedding saree. Even the sangeet night saree was quite pretty. Chiffons are lovely and quite sensuous - in a way much more revealing that those deep, almost backless outfits..

Maybe as AA said, they are saving everything for the heroine track (which, like they like to remind us, isn't coming anytime soon..)

Thank you all, AA, Mona, River

I have liked the unwedding saree and Sangeet Night saree.

They match the occassion.

Even that Party Night Black saree as also the one as done for occasion. It was good - sophisticated look for the star's wife.

The worst saree has been the Jagraata Evening sarees.

People forget that saree is worn to look beautiful. The way Dipali wears. Like its her everyday attire and yet she wants to look classy. And doesn't even wear any expensive sarees. But costume designers of MEIEJ give Madhu-DD wears Saree as if it a dress that is worn only on occasions. They make her look like a Gauri Khan to me, Saari ka A B C D bhi nahin pata. And it is worn like a slip in dress for an occassion.

But yes...the unwedding saree...it was the best. Why DD was comfortable in it ...because it was a thick, silk or pseudo-silk or rayon material. Rayon is lighter than Satin. And at the same time it is opaque. DD must have felt comfortable in letting the saree flow down...it befitted her image or the woman in agony not caring how she looks...and as an actor with her personal preferences, she was okay to carryon.

If she is comfortable with that kind of material, then why not order some rayon based saress. Or go for Bombay Dyeing kind of good designs. She needs to look classy like a Star's wife. How difficult is that ? Ritu Deora is the costume Designer. I am not that very happy with her. She gives very stock kind of costumes for all the actors in the show. Thok type..as in Wholesale style.

Anyways...I am a saree buff...there are some basic rules about saree. You cannot call it designer saree, even if boutiques sell you that way.

Ah, the "dressing Madhu" discussion! I put something related to this in the meta thread, but I so agree with what y'all are saying, especially you Shri. Why is she the worst dressed among the ladies of MEIEJ? Are they saving it for later???!

Undoubtedly her anarkalis are the ghastliest examples of her dresses, the one last week being one of the worst. Some of the salwar kameez or chudidhars are ok, the black one she was wearing the day after holi was good. But why no classy chiffons like Shri says? And, why no western outfits at all? Her older sister Trishna wears Linking Road ka footpath ka westerns, surely Madhu can pull off a few too - DD has an awesome figure?

If only DD's costumer were on Twitter too, we could ask her!

Oh!! that one !!!! 🤣

But honestly I liked it. BECAUSE it was not her regular style. As I am usually sick of her hair style, so that hair-style was a relief to me. Anything is better. 😆

We can hum this song for that saree and hair-style...reminds me of old movies and all those heroines with that kind of braid.

O Meri Chamak Chalo, Chale Thaane Chalo 🤣

I remember that one. Quite memorable. Didn't even have to go back to the old video...🤣

I like her natural curly hair (which she used for dropping water on Sultan 😆). Not sure why she was not allowed to keep it right after her 4 phere ki shadi. Her overall getup changed overnight from the simple chawl girl to this completely different looking person. I somehow feel she was looking better (both her clothes and overall persona) before she got married to RK.
By the way I liked her hair style on that mata rani puja day when she was wearing that green costume. That somehow made her look like a gaon ki gori. At least that is how I felt it. Her hair for a change was not on her right shoulder.
Frankly, in this scorching Mumbai heat, how is hair able to remain on one side that too upbraided and not sweaty at all?
The only woman in this serial wearing non-Indian clothes is Trishna. But I frankly don't like what she wears. It looks either gaudy or not well put together at all. I think Padmini and Dipali have much better dress sense amongst all these women in this serial.

There I said all I had to regarding someone else's dress sense, clothes, hair etc. 😉

Originally posted by: 0-SD-0

MM, you mirror my thoughts there.

Trishna is made to dress like a tramp. She befits the Chawl mein rahne waali junior artist. If you see, all the extras from Prod Crew Team, in spoiler videos or the extras in shoot scenes, they are dressed as Trishna.

Madhu in Chudi-salwar-kurta looks very odd. But then she is soap heroine, so she will need to have traditional get-up.

I like Shama Deshpande's dressing and her blouses. But her sarees are of very low-standard material. Infact, these costume designers should go for Old serials and check out those matronly ladies used to dress. One can really find good sarees without resorting to go for polyestyer, or pseudo-silk or Art-Silk material.

Since when people started thinking cotton is cheap? 😕 Cotton is actually expensive.

Balaji PH is good in that sense. Then, it just means that NAUTANKI is very stingy on spending Make-up, Costumes and Hair-Styling.

Costumes are worst.

We are just critizing Madhu's costumes. If we start on RK costumes, we will write a thesis.

His shirts never end. Increasingly his shirts becoming Executive Style. Is this woman Ritu Deora even paying attention to anything or busy catering to 10 different soaps ?

I think, I should just take it all to META thread.

P,

This has been an extensively discussed debate by us in September. You would see a variety of views here from experienced Indian soap viewers across the world from a long time...growing up since Doordarshan days.

Here is the the link and summary of it.

META chai party: women in soapland
Today's topic is: Are female roles in Indian soaps regressive? Are they promoting dangerous gender stereotyping that adversely affects how generations of female viewers form ideas of their roles and reponsibilities? Could the medium of television be used more effectively in promoting ideas of equality?

RK costumes - yeah, he really needs to vary these front buttoned shirts. I don't mind them (I think he looks great in anything ) but the same style all the time is no good. I think the costume designers need to take some pix of SRK, Salman or Hrithik and get some ideas.

PS: I am grateful (indeed, deeply so) that they do not make him wear those waistcoats - most Indian actors end up looking like waiters in those (two exceptions- Hrithik and Barun Sobti.)
