"JUST LIKE THE MOVIES" - AN ASYA OS
*********************
Queenfisher Air-hostess Tina Sharma smoothed the creases on her skirt as she gracefully walked across the checking area of the airport. The fourteen hour flight from London to Bhopal had been a gruelling one, and Tina was glad to reach home base. Time to tuck in some food and hit the bed straight, she pondered, lost in thought.
As she was about to take the elevator to reach the main lobby with her co-hostesses, she saw a man, well-built, six feet tall and striking in appearance. Talk about some very delicious eye candy! But what drew Tina's attention was not his looks, but his demeanor.
The man kept running across the airport at an unbelievable pace, screaming agony from every pore of his body. His hair was a wild mess, and his obviously expensive coat was askew. But more than this, it was his eyes, deep set and chocolate brown, which suggested a profound sense of loss. It was almost as if the man had lost all the meaning in his life, searching desperately for something that would make him feel whole again.
Tina felt a sudden pang in her heart. She thought, "Poor guy. I wonder what has made him so sad and ...lost!!! "
The man stopped abruptly, gazing wildly in all directions around him. He closed his eyes for a moment, drawing in a deep breath. He then screamed with all his might. "ZOYAAA!!!"
Curious onlookers turned around, looking the source of the commotion and locating the hapless man. All of them gathered around the man, uncertain about what he was going to do next.
That explains it, Tina sardonically thought. It's what it usually boils down to...a girl! It was obvious that the man was searching for his ladylove.
Suddenly, a horde of cops and airport officials appeared out of nowhere, carrying guns, all prepared to tackle the mysterious intruder.
"Uh oh", Tina thought. Seems like loverboy forgot to buy a ticket in his hurry!
But the man wasn't paying attention to all these immaterial details. His eyes suddenly lost their focus, as he kept staring dazedly at a distance. Tina followed Adonis' gaze and found a very pretty girl in her early 20's, dressed in a green top and wearing a blank expression similar to that of Mr. I-am-Devdas-dressed- in -a- three- piece-suit.
Tina observed how the man didn't even blink, as if he was afraid that the beautiful vision in front of him would be lost forever. He reiterated his earlier cry, but this time, it sounded more like a prayer. In a soft and pleading voice, he called out- "Zo...ya!"
Tina felt a sudden clenching in her heart. This is what true love looked and sounded like, she thought.
The girl turned suddenly. When she saw the man, she kept looking with immense wonder, as if she couldn't believe her eyes. She involuntarily let out a small gasp, as tears flowed from her eyes. "Mr. Kh...Khan?", she said, making it sound like a question.
"So that's his name", Tina bemusedly noted.
This gesture was enough for the man as he stepped out of his trance, frantically running towards the object of his quest. The girl kept staring at him, beckoning him silently towards her with her kohl-lined eyes.
Tina gave a quiet smile at this happy sight, only to replace it immediately with an expression of alarm. As the man drew closer, a bunch of cops leaped on him, preventing him from reaching his woman. An elderly man wearing specs, who was evidently accompanying the girl to her flight, also tried to pull her away.
But all the spoilsport cops couldn't restrain the man as he frantically extended his hands to the girl, trying to draw her towards him with whatever might he had left. The girl also reciprocated his gesture, trying to shake off the elderly man who was trying to pull her away from her lover's grasp.
The young man suddenly fended off all his detractors and pulled the girl into a passionate hug, while muttering constantly, "Mat jao Zoya...Mat jao Zoya..." Tina noted how everyone in the vicinity, including the cops and the elderly man, stood transfixed by the sight before their eyes. It was obvious that this was a couple whose love was true and abiding. No one simply had the heart to separate them any further.
The man suddenly went down on his knees, fumbling in his coat pocket for something. The girl simply narrowed her eyes; she couldn't understand what he was attempting to do. Suddenly, the man gave out a squeal of recognition and drew out the mysterious object from his pocket.
Tina gasped. It was a ring!!! The man was about to propose!
The girl looked dazed as the man shoved his ring-holding hand near her face, making sure that she understood what he was attempting to do. The man hesitated for a moment, before asking softly, "Ms. Zoya Farooqui, will you do me the honour of being my wife?"The girl kept silent, but she conveyed her acquiescence in a gentle gesture as she closed her hands around the man's hand.
It was a yes!!!, Tina exclaimed, as her heart danced with excitement. The onlookers erupted in glee, and even the stern cops and the girl's elderly companion let out helpless, accepting grins. As the man drew up from his knees, almost snatching the woman into his loving arms, people hooted for the young pair, celebrating the beginning of their journey. Some even clicked pictures and took videos of this unexpected sight.
Tina sighed to herself. Life is weird, she thought. I believed that such intense gestures of love existed only in the movies. Seems that I was wrong.
She straightened immediately and grinned. Maybe there's someone out there for me too...she wistfully affirmed to herself, as she continued her progress towards one of the exit gates.
