PART 31
It had been two days since both of them had returned back to their normal life, geet's school had taken up a speed now, as it was close to her half yearly exams while maan's bank was keeping him busy a lot these days.
He was in his office wrapping up when his cell rang. He smiled as he saw the caller ID and picked it before it could even ring again. "kasisi hai aap mom", maan said as he sat back on his comfortable chair. "am ok bte, aap kaise hai maan, do din se baat nhi hui" savitri said with happiness of hearing her son again.
"mom mai to thik hu, aur dad kha hai, unhone to wha jane ke baad mujhse baat hi nhi ki ek baar bhi", he said complaining to his mother. "chup badmash" savitri said. Maan is 26 year old now still he is a child for his mother, and they still shares that lovely bond between a naughty kid and mother.
"waise dadima kaisi hai, ab theek hai na unki tabiyat" he asked, his voice filled with worry. "hmm maan, the doctors In the village are trying their best, but her age doesn't supports them much and secondly she isn't ready to leave her village, the place where your dadu took his last breath, she wants to stay here till her last day. We are trying to make her agree but she isn't cooperating, now even your dad had lost hope", said savitri her voice low and worried.
Maan's dadima stays in their patrimonial village which is in the most backward area of Punjab, where you won't even find electricity or telephone signals. Many a times, maan's parents had asked her to come in city and stay with them but she never agreed, she had an strong emotional bond with the place, her husband was the sarpanch of the village and it won't be wrong to say that the entire village was a family for them.
But after dadu's death, she lived alone in the big house they have there, but she just couldn't part away from the memories of her husband. Now she is 80+, her health declining, and not supporting her at this age. The day after maan left for Mumbai, probably after it's one week, they received a call from village about dadima's serious condition and poor health.
Maan's parents had left the very day for the village to tend to dadima but after reaching there, they came to know that she isn't ready to leave village for taking medication in town too. So finally losing in front of her stubbornness, they had arranged a doctor to check her regularly from the nearest town they could and his parents had stayed with her since then.
Many a times, maan's father had to come back to delhi due to his job's obligation thus leaving savitri with dadima in last two months. The village had a single operating telephone in the post office which too remains dead half a time and it's the only source of connection of this village with the outside world except telegraphs and letters.
"acha yeh bata how was your birthday, geet ne to bahut sare gifts diye honge", savitri said with a teasing voice, clearly knowing how much maan loves geet. A bright smile formed on his lips remembering the day, it was so magical, just the perfect gift for him. No material gift would have satisfied him this much as that gift of his mishit satisfied him.
"ha maa, bhut accha din tha, we enjoyed a lot that day" he said but then knowing the next obvious question of his mother about geet's number, he changed the topic back to dadi.
In the last two months savitri had called maan atleast once in a week to hear from his son but could never contact geet as most of the time he used to be in office during those hours and when at home, he would fake some reason, thus avoiding any connection between geet and his mother, the very promise he did to geet at the time of leaving delhi.
Even savitri asked for their flat number too but he would change the topic to something more important thus making savitri forget about the number. His dad had called him few times and had asked about his condition in Mumbai but never specifically asked to talk to geet so that issue wasn't even a problem.
He knew over the time, his feelings for her had just multiplied but he was still scared of future and thus he doenst want to give any false hope to his mother. He knew his mother would be in pain the day she would know the truth but this distance will atleast reduce the pain a little. He could bare anything in this world, but his mother's pain was one thing he won't accept let it be given by geet too.
But what scared him was future, may be he can ignore his mother for few more weeks like that, but then what, he didn't know. He everyday wished first thing in the morning to babaji to show him the right way, the one which will be correct for her and his family too.
They were announcing the results of their maths test in the class and as always it was geet who scored full marks only. Professor was quiet impressed with the new girl, who had not only secured more than his expectations, but had also given him the respect a teacher expects from his students which isn't seen much in these days.
Geet was sitting in library as it was her free period and the whole gang had their optional subjects then. She was revising her chapters again when she felt someone sitting in front of her. she looked up to see rohan sitting there with his head down on table. Geet looked around the almost empty library and then at him, he was all alone that was quiet a surprise as he never roams and alone and his presence in library was itself a shocker.
"is everything ok" she couldn't help but ask. Rohan looked up at geet and nodded no. geet wanted to ask him his problems but then thinking it's his personal matter, and maybe he won't want to share she left the issue and digged back in her books.
Rohan was appalled seeing her not even reacting. He had chosen this time specially to talk to her as no one would be with her now but here she isn't even paying attention on him, that's not what rohan nanda was used too.
"are you the one who scored full marks in this monthly maths test" he asked after a moment of silence. 'yes, I did' geet said looking up again. 'how can you do that when the paper was so tough and that professor tried to even deduct extra marks' said rohan making a shocked face, his mind congratulated him for atleast starting some conversation with her.
'the paper was tough but it contained every point the professor taught, there wasn't ant new topic in it and secondly he had one step marking, so no extra marks was deducted for sure' geet replied not quite pleased with his accusation on professor.
'but he teaches so boringly ki pura class so jae' rohan retorted. 'math subject could never be boring, it's just how much attention you pays on topic' geet replied with confidence.
'ha you will say so na because you score highest and is favourite student of teacher' he said.
'if that's what you think, then I can't change your point of view. But one thing I will say, I am favourite of professor because I do my best and scores highest, not that I score highest because I am his favourite. These are two different things and you should never forget the difference in them.' Geet was quite offended with his words, did he just tried to accuse her of getting extra marks because of being in good list of professor.
Oops, I think the matter is going wrong way, jaldi sambhal le rohan, you won't get such an awesome chance again dude to befriend her. "hey no no, it's not like that, I clearly understand your words. It's just you know the exams are approaching and I still don't know the m of maths, thus I was frustrated. If this time I won't score good, I am sure professor will throw me out of his class' rohan said with a sigh, his face filled with worries and problems.
Bas rohan, ab dekhna she will show sympathy to you and friendship pakki, his brain did a high five, but that sympathy never came. But instead of being concerned, she simply replied, "I think instead of wasting time and cursing professor, if you start studying the subject would help you more in exams."
Rohan was impressed with the attitude of geet, she was one of her kind. Geet heard the bell ringing indicating that the period is over and stood up picking her books. 'I have to go now, byee' she said and moved away but then his voice stopped her in her tracks.
"could you do me a favour please" "a favour???" "well could you please help me in maths and prepare me for my exam, see if I start now that too without a guidance, I won't reach anywhere, so please if you could, it will be a great help" his voice was actually pleading to her.
Geet looked at him for a moment and then said, "if that could help you, I won't mind but you have maximum three weeks as after that exams would start, so do you think it would be enough???" "atleats it would be better than to fail in exams!!!" "ok then, we could start from tomorrow in library in fifth period, meet you tomorrow" saying that she went away as she saw meera outside.
"Chalo atleast kuch baat to bani and you need to desperately pass in this exam rohan, so uska solution bhi mill gya. Baat manna padega rohan, this girl has something afterall she made rohan nanda to plead in front of her."
Guys I know no maaneet moments, but you will get them soon. The story needs to mix with geet's college and maan's office life too to actually bring out the real essence of it, but I won't divert from maaneet for long.
both are drifting away...😔
