April 08, 2013, (Sawfnews.com) - Hrithik Roshan's superhero film Krrish 3 will break from past precedent and release on Sunday, Diwali, November 3, a measure perhaps of how much faith the Roshans have in their work of passion.
Most filmmakers attempt to make bank on the opening weekend, relying on hype and a relaxed weekend mood to lure movie aficionados to theaters in droves, without waiting for word of mouth feedback.
As a result, even when their films turns out to be box office duds, filmmakers recover much of their costs.
The Roshans seem to be breaking ranks, relying on good word of mouth to draw crowds daily through a long run.
Explaining the Diwali Day release, Rakesh Roshan, the film's producer and director, says, "It's an auspicious occasion, so why not make the most of it by releasing Krrish 3 on the same date? Plus, my distributors have informed me that no big film is releasing pre-Diwali."
He adds that he has taken the decision with Hrithik's total support.
Rakesh Roshan last directed Krrish, the sequel to Koi Mil Gaya, in 2006. Both sci-fi films were Hollywood standard.
The industry seems extremely confident about Krrish 3. Asked if he feels similarly, the filmmaker responded with a smile, "Absolutely not. If the film is good, it will work. I don't believe in pre-empting results."
According to a trade insider, the Roshan's decision to release on Diwali, instead of the Friday two days before, may well be an astute financial decision, rather than an emotional one.
"People are reluctant to leave their homes a few days before the festival. So if the film releases on November 1, it might not get as big an opening as it would if it released on November 3," says the insider.
So are the Roshans being smart, or foolhardy, we asked Abhijit Mhamunkar, a Mumbai based industry observer and media analyst.
Abhijit says that since no big film is releasing before Krrish 3 and for two weeks after, it was easy for the Roshans to release the film on Diwali day itself, instead of Friday.
"Krrish 3 is a proven blockbuster brand and by releasing the film on Diwali, when the whole country is on a spending spree, is likely to land the Roshans the biggest ever opener so far.
"Its vacation time in schools in India. Kids form a large fan base of the Krrish franchise and there will be a lot of cases of a single kid pulling both the parents to the theater, multiplying footfalls.
"The Roshans will make good money via Diwali specific merchandising. Apart from Krrish 3 toys, expect Krrish anaars and fuljhadis too!
"Krrish 3 is the perfect big ticket cinema to release on Diwali as its aimed at both the single screens and multiplexes.
"Also I think the film will be dubbed in regional languages bringing in added income."
