Television has been commercially available since 1920s. In India, Television made inroads into every household in eighties with series like Ramayan and Mahabharata though experimental transmission had happened as early as 1959. A part of All India Radio (AIR) in 1965, television in India become a regular transmission though until 1975 only seven cities including Mumbai and Amritsar enjoyed this service. After separation from AIR in 1976, National telecast commenced in 1982 with Doordarshan as the only channel. Today, Television sets are present in more than half of the Indian households. From one channel we now have choice of over 500 channels and growing.

With the way metamorphosis that television and television programming has undergone, we as audience are spoilt for choices in terms of range and content. With the advent of Daily Soaps, television has seen a new phenomenon in Indian households. There is a social change, with people organising life around their favorite series to avoiding interaction with friends and family when their show is on air. What used to be a Sunday morning phenomenon in the days of Ramayan and Mahabharat; where cities literally came to a standstill, now, rush to get back home to their favorite character is something that can be heard in office pantry conversations, at bus stops or in elevators.

Life it seems to be revolving around television. A little de-addiction has happened with advent of Digital Video Recording, however, missing the telecast of one's favorite show sometimes feels like sacrilege to many.
