The Malayalam film industry woke up to heartbreaking news on Tuesday as Santhakumari, the mother of legendary actor Mohanlal, passed away at the age of 90. She breathed her last at the actor’s residence in Elamakkara, Kochi, leaving behind a family, an industry, and countless admirers mourning a quiet yet deeply respected presence behind one of Indian cinema’s tallest figures.

A Quiet Farewell at Home

Santhakumari had been undergoing treatment for neurological-related health issues at Amrita Hospital for some time. Doctors confirmed her passing on December 30. Mohanlal, who was in Kochi at the time, rushed home as soon as he received the news. The loss marks a deeply personal moment for the actor, who has often spoken about the grounding role his mother played in his life, even as fame and accolades followed him across decades.

The Bond That Shaped a Superstar

Those close to Mohanlal frequently recall the emotional bond he shared with his mother. Santhakumari was known to be deeply affected by his on-screen struggles. Watching scenes where he was beaten or hurt would often leave her teary-eyed. During the early days of his career, when Mohanlal portrayed intense and negative characters, she reportedly found it difficult to watch his films at all.

Earlier this year, on Mother’s Day, the actor shared a rare old photograph of the two of them, offering fans a tender glimpse into their private world. That moment now carries even more weight, echoing the quiet love that defined their relationship. Perhaps the most moving example of this bond came recently when Mohanlal received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Despite the celebrations and national recognition, the first person he chose to meet after returning to Kochi was his mother.

Santhakumari hailed from Elanthoor village in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district. After marrying Viswanathan Nair, a former Law Secretary to the Kerala government, she moved to Thiruvananthapuram, where their Hill View home in Mudavanmugal became the heart of the family for decades.

As news of her passing spread, members of the film fraternity gathered to pay their respects. Megastar Mammootty, along with his wife Sulfath, visited Mohanlal’s residence, reflecting the shared grief and long-standing bonds within the industry.

Santhakumari’s mortal remains will be taken to Thiruvananthapuram, where her funeral is scheduled for December 31, 2025.
