Everyone wants a piece of Yash, don't they? Gayatri needed his unconditional support in integrating Akash into the family which is why she steeled herself for him to leave, even though it was breaking her heart. He wanted to leave to make her acceptance of Akash easier, for there no longer to be a conflict in her that caused her to act out of anger and irrationality, and to preserve his wife's honour because he could not stand to see Aarti hurt any more. He was willing to go out of his way, and out of his house even, to help Gayatri ensure that Akash knew his place in the house, felt secure in the love and acceptance of the family and therefore let go of his anger and desperation and learned to be part of them. It is a different matter that neither of them could foresee the extent of damage the years of slander and poverty had caused Akash and how Ishita was capitalising on those issues precisely to manipulate him into carrying out her agenda against Yash.
Yash's first priority, having taken responsibility to integrate Akash and on seeing that Gayatri was the only one who was with him in taking some initiative, despite the fact that she was going a little overboard, he supported her completely. However, this cost him Aarti's dignity and in order to be a good husband, he decided to leave the house so he could keep his promise to his mother while also keeping his promises as a husband, not to let anything hurt Aarti. However, in this decision he found that he was breaking his children's hearts and forcing them to leave the home that either signified their security and belonging, in the case of Ansh, or was the only home they had ever known, in the case of Palak and Payal.
Finally, it was SP, in his need to see his business and family maintain the stature and unity it always had, who pulled Yash in one direction too many and Yash reached his elastic limit and snapped. In the spur of the moment, because of SP's suicide threat, he had to choose to stay and accept the property and when Akash overstepped the boundaries once again, Yash had to fight. In a way it was symbolic and foreshadowing what was to come: Yash had to grow out of the idea that his mother could do no wrong. Of course he will be no less grieved by her death now, but the last minute revelations of her humanity prepared him to go on without her from day to day. At the last minute, with SP's decision and Akash's behaviour, Yash was forced to see that Gayatri's promises were not doing any good and that they were holding everyone back from doing what was just. He rose as a leader today because he found it in him to realise Gayatri's humanity.
All of it really comes down to SP. He did admit that it was his mistake yesterday, but only to those people who would not blame him... thinking about that in retrospect, it is a little too convenient for my taste. Is there courage in confessing your sins to people who will never hold you accountable? Instead of doing what he should have in the first place and taking responsibility for Akash's situation, SP passed on the entirety of the responsibility to Yash. My question is, why? He could have gotten Yash to stay without making him take all the property and instigating Akash's extreme rage. But he didn't because he is still not willing to accept Akash as his son, his blood.
For this reason, I continue to see SP as more reprehensible than Gayatri even though he might seem like the more sensible one. Gayatri made huge errors in judgment because of the conflict raging within her, but there was never a doubt that at some point or the other, she would see the light because there was no doubt at any point that her love for Yash had disappeared. It was merely suppressed in her guilt and desperation to compensate Akash. I do believe she felt guilty that she loved Yash so much when her own blood had suffered for thirty years so she tried extra hard to push Yash away... but still, just like she realised today, it would have dawned on her eventually because she chose to accept Akash, hoping that Yash would understand her intentions. All her reactions were those inflicted by anger and emotion, but invariably backed by the best of intentions.
SP on the other hand, made a conscious, calculated choice not to accept Akash, ever, and he is still convinced that he is right. Why is Akash so obsessed with the wealth that he is willing to disturb the peace of a woman on her deathbed? Because he has still not gotten what he came to this house for: the acceptance and name of his father. Not only did he prove that he was SP's blood, he also proved that he was the legitimate son of the Scindias and still he got nothing from SP, who leans ever more in Yash's direction. Akash's demands keep growing because he is not getting what he wants and his attitude is getting more and more bitter because the wall that was beginning to come down when Yash agreed to all his conditions has gone up again, only to be fortified by Ishita's well placed instigation.
So in some ways, I think losing Gayatri is SP's punishment for choosing at all between his sons. No matter what the circumstances of his birth, his son by Radha should have been as precious to him as his sons by Gayatri, or at the very least, as much his responsibility. He chose to draw a line between Yash and Akash and it causes me to wonder if Gayatri's death is divine intervetntion, a sign that SP does not always get to choose what he keeps and what he doesn't. Even in the case of Gayatri, he chose what to take seriously and what not to; he never really loved and accepted all of her for what she was. His acceptance of Akash remains a path to redemption for all these sins committed in his pride. Even today when Gayatri was lying on the hospital bed, there was no humility from SP. It was almost as though he was angry with her for getting hurt. It is only when she is gone that he will realise what his pride cost him.
What was nice, however, was to see Gayatri leaving this world with grace and peace of mind. She was able to see clearly the love that Yash had for her and do right by him in her testimony to the police. She didn't blame Yash as Akash had told her to, nor did she blame Akash: in short, she did what Yash's mother would do and allowed him to place her back on her pedestal. She didn't talk about SP or Radha's mistakes, but apologised for hers and thanked them for the good things they gave her. This is exactly the kind of closure I was hoping for and her death will give Yash inspiration, rather than vengeance or dejection, to make sure her death was not in vain.
