2013 Still Awaits The First Hit

Wednesday 10th March 2013 10.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The first quarter of the year has nearly finished and the first hit film of 2013 has yet to come. There have been a handful of successful films in 2013 led by Race 2 but none of them have gone onto to be a major hit. Last year in the first quarter films like Agneepath and Kahaani had emerged huge hits.

The first quarter still has Himmatwala to come which should do the trick while second quarter looks much stronger than the first with potential hits like Ek Thi Daayan, Shootout At Wadala, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 and Ghanchakkar and there is always a chance of a small film or two surprising.

The major problem in the first two months has been the non performance in the North of most films. Today business is such that if a film works in Mumbai and North the job is done as it forms 60-70% of the market depending on the film. Even a film like Special 26 without doing too well in the Gujarat belt (which is 35-40% of Mumbai circuit) has managed to outperform in Mumbai circuit as it heads to a near 12 crore share compared to near 7 in Delhi/UP..

yes and i hate varun. i don'y know why everyone is mad about him especially the fact that he harassed and tortured the two girls. i know its in nature of females not supporting females. but i do support and want justice for vinnie and ella both. varun should be punished. no doubts on that

on the topic : no i don't think ABCD and kai po che are hits. BOI hasn't given them clean chits for being 'hits' but they are successful films. and that's what matters.

Can somebody here please tell me how it is decided whether a film is hit or not? Like, how many times the budget should a film make to be declared a hit? For example: KPC was made at a budget of 12-16crores and has earned almost 60 crores (overseas + domestic) so
will it be considered a hit, superhit, average or just successful?
Just wondering cos Taran Adarsh wrote the other day that KPC is a hit and doing excellent business overseas as well :-S

^^^Welcome to the fascinating world of box office business. Here is an article for your understanding. if you understand please explain to yours truly.
For more details pls contact other knowledgable members like db_reloaded, -radhe-.
PS: If I remember right BOI had given KPC's budget to around 30 crs. To be declared a hit it has to make atleast twice the amount it was sold to distributors. In other words it has to make 60crs assuming that the producers sold it to distributors at no profit no loss 30 crs. If they sold at higher price say 35 cr then it has to make 70 cr.

Q. What is the budget of Kai Po Che and Zilla Ghaziabad?

A. The budgets including print and advertising are 30 crore for Kai Po Che and 36 crore for Zilla Ghaziabad.
