THAT. That is what Asad is trying to do. Push away Zoe so that he can fight and shut down his own feelings.He may or may not acknowledge what he told Zoe that night about his feelings and his conflict over her in his mind and his heart. But he has taken a decision - that he will not let these feelings of love take over his sanity and his rulebook of 30 years. He may steal glances at her, tear the world apart if something happens to her, cringe everytime she is pained, look here and there while being rude to her - but come what may and how, he is going to fight his love for Zoe at any cost. Earlier, the strategy was to scream Miss.Faarooqui at every second and give her a lesson tameez and tehzeeb. Now, it is to avoid Zoe , be subtly but pointedly rude to her and to tell " himself" more than Zoe that just how imperfect she is.
The look exchange between Asad and Zoe when the song came to an end spoke volumes about their intense but suppressed sentiments for each-other. While Zoe seems ready to plunge into love once her dimaag-ka-flashbulb and dil-ki-tubelight gives a signal of clarity, Asad would rather die a bachelor than give into his heart that stubbornly demands Zoe , like a kid demands a lollipop.
No. Asad's resolve to un-love Zoe is not as weak as we think. A harsh self-conditioning of 30 years will not melt that easily. But again, his heart has its own sheath of arrows. It would rather leave Asad and rush to Zoe. That frustration, internal conflict, the tug of war between his mind and heart gives rise to this studied but simmering attitude that he is giving Zoe.
Asad is neither foolish nor is he isolated from his feelings for Zoe. It was so difficult for him to say that 'Aadat' line . It was not for Salwaar-Kameez or Zoe. It was for his own self - he was trying to tell himself that if i try i can un-love Zoe no matter how much i want her. The shifty look in his eyes and his sudden frustrated discomfort said it all.
And Zoe? A woman falling in love., Many may think that why Zoe should do all these attention-seeking antics and why cannot she just ignore Asad? Fair enough. Its easy for an outsider to say it but put yourself in Zoe's shoes and see the picture. These past months , Asad has become her center of existence . Sometimes, to a point where she has forgotten why she is in Bhopal. She has been falling in love with Asad for quite sometime, taking a step forward from seeking his attention and her obsession with him. And then... one fine day... a designer churidaar doll walks in and unintentionally tries to take Asad away from her. Ego and anger surface later. Injury and a helpless heart comes first. She doesn't want Asad to sit in front of her and write poetry on her. She only wants Asad to give her the 101% attention that he has been giving. She wants his attention and his 'Miss.Farooqui' songs back. That's her life, her right and nobody can take it away from her.
Don't think of Asad as a criminal and Zoe as a desperate puppy. NO., That is not what they are. Sit in their chairs and realize that while Asad is desperately trying to save his heart, Zoe is desperately trying to save what is hers.
Asad remembers everything that he said that night and he knows he opened his heart to Zoe , or else the 'aadat' line would have never come. So, it has suddenly become a battle for him to hide his heart and his vulnerability from Zoe. What is the best way to do it? Hurt her. Push her away. She will forget me i will forget her and life will go on.
Zoe consciously knows only one thing. No woman, be it in a churidaar or a micro-mini has any right to stand next to Asad. That's her Mr.Khan. That's her Phoophi. That's her Najma . And this home is her home no matter how cranky Mr.Khan goes.
You may feel Zoe was a despo today but i don't see it that way. It was her cute, innocent but very very strong way of conveying to Salwaar-Kameez- Whether Mr.Khan agrees or not, this is my territory and you BACK OFF.
Its actually a very very weird love story.
A man who knows in complete 100% consciousness that he is in love , yet he wants to forego it. A woman who has no conscious idea that she is in love and yet, she is fighting an unconscious battle to save it.
The only people standing in the way of Asad and Zoe into becoming AsYa are Asad and Zoe themselves. Enemies are still on the periphery.
And signing off, i have to say it. Zoe is definitely the kind of woman who would not only fight FOR her man , she can even fight her man Asad until he confesses that he loves her and her shaayris! You gotta give this chick some credit. Asad said so many nasty things to her but she was not the kind to be taken down . I loved her "Oh really, Mr.Khan?"
P.S- Salwaar-Kameez thinks Zoe is Pyaari? Asad , tera oil nikaal degi ye churidaar waali tehzeebdaar naari., Kal cylinder ke chakkar mein tum Zoe ki lagaa doge and writers have been smart that we cannot even blame you when you scream your lungs out at Zoe. Zoe! Kisne kahaa tha superwoman banne ko? Uff!😆
