Week 1: First Impressions
Saraswatichandra -
A self-flagellating pessimist, Saras is neither arrogant, nor vain when he refuses to take a chance with Kumud. A man so impacted by the loss of his mother that he feels foreign to all other emotions. He takes comfort in grief and reminiscence and wants nothing to get in the way of spiritually connecting with God and thereby his mother. Connects with the spiritual and grieves the loss of his father to this conniving woman. The marriage is a distraction he refuses without a thought or glance before quickly realizing his feeble letter missed - an apology! He sees his shortcoming, his shyness keeps him from wording his regret in inflicting pain on anyone. Embarrassed when people are in awe of his wealth or looks, he does not see what the fuss is all about. To him, his father is rich, not he. Is intrigued by the sensuality and Saraswati-like kanak of Kumud. He's left flabbergasted by her force and sense of justice.
Kumud -
A first for TV. Pure as pearl. A dignified, proud, serious, commanding and unapologetic intelligent woman doing social good. Feet firmly on the ground and a cut above the rest. She dresses simple, hardly ever does makeup or her hair more than strictly necessary. Her ornament is her arch and grace. Notice how she stands, head held high, back arched and eyes unwavering. The type of woman who makes a feminist and society hardly ever feels comfortable with. Most are intimidated by her - men of her confidence, women of her strength and society of her will. She's a swan who will not grant herself so easily to anyone who asks. First comment by her was why Saras would take her part of the decision. She seeks depth and sincerity in her other half and that is why she cuts into Saras by calling it as it is - a cowardly act. She challenges men and most hate her for it, but Saras is intrigued. Meaning - he can take a strong woman.
Sanjay Leela Bansali -
Still the maestro. He can make music with a story and move it forward without stalling. He knows that the actors need time to grow into their characters and he's giving them time to adjust. The acting in any new show is always half-baked, it does not have the time luxury of films. But they had a strong start, Gautam especially did a great job. Jennifer shined today with her speech.
Unlike most serials creatives, Sanjay wastes no time on useless intrigue and fillers. He understands that a story needs to develop every second with every character. This will not be a director like other soaps whose plot is obvious from the start (even though there is a book on which it is based)! For those worrying about the fast pace, this is how it is supposed to be according to the original story. SLB knows what he's doing. He's creating a tension and letting with simmer with sensuality. The pangs of love are most strongly felt in vulnerable, righteous hearts - like Saras' and Kumud's.
Hope his TV launch makes TRP history. Good luck to Saraswatichandra!
Waiting to hear your views on this first impression. Till next week!
