I read a very interesting article in the local newspaper today, and I thought it would be rather interesting to see your views on it.
Here's the article:

List your dreams and start living them

By Marilyn Gardner, The Christian Science Monitor

'Someday' is a word filled with promise and possibility. "Someday I want to..." we say dreamily, finishing the sentence with a variety of specific or vague plans. There are books to read, trips to take, projects to start or finish.

But then clocks tick and calendar pages turn. Months and years go by, and "someday" never quite comes. Caught up in careers and families, duties and interruptions, we become masters of postponement.

For Carrie Tuhy, a former magazine editor in New York, that realisation finally prompted action. After losing her job as editor of Real Simple magazine three years ago, she began considering her next step.

"I had always said I'll do certain things when I have time," says Tuhy, who is in her 50s. "Suddenly I had time, but I wasn't sure what these things were that I had been planning to do."

Afraid she might squander this opportunity — "dribble it away on things that didn't seem significant" — she began compiling a 'life list'.

'Life skills'

"We all have to-do lists," Tuhy says. "Pick up the dry cleaning or work out three times a week. They tend to be the kinds of things that aren't very nourishing. When I sat down to think about it, I made a list of things that were nourishing for me."

That list included nature, travel, spirituality and friends. In addition to being nourishing, she says, those broad categories were "empowering."

Under each heading, she wrote specific activities. Her list grew to 25 goals. Some were big: "It wasn't just 'Take more trips.' It was 'Go to India.' "Explaining her desire to visit India and Turkey, she says, "I wanted to see the world through Muslim eyes."

Other destinations were more modest. After moving to New York as a young journalist, Tuhy stopped driving. But she still has a driver's licence, and the open road beckoned. She wanted to take a driving trip.

Some items on the list were small and practical. She classifies them as 'life skills' — things she wanted to know to feel competent.

She enrolled in Spanish language classes, broadening her view of other cultures. She also mastered Microsoft Excel and learned to make her own business cards on the computer.

"The world requires different things of me than in the past, and I wanted to become proficient in them," Tuhy says. In the process she found pleasure, satisfaction and accomplishment.

Making a life list is an idea gaining popularity and visibility. Ellen DeGeneres, host of a daytime talk show, encourages her celebrity guests and members of her audience to list things they'd like to accomplish.

In similar vein, novelist Stephen King recently told a New York Times reporter, "You get older, you find out time is shorter, and you read stuff you've missed before. You say, 'I can't wait forever anymore to read Eudora Welty.' I finally got to Eudora Welty."

Tuhy emphasises that nothing about her list was done with the notion of mortality. "It was more about making the most of each day," she says.

More cognisant

In an achievement-oriented culture, she found that drawing up a list made her "more cognisant of the real achievements of being alive." She adds, "It made me recognise the things that will both feed your soul and engage your mind."

Today Tuhy has completed 23 of the goals on her list. But merely checking off each accomplishment isn't her point. "It wasn't just to do them, it was to dream bigger dreams." The result? "I'm much happier with the person I've become."

Ask friends and relatives what they'd like to do "someday" and the responses can be intriguing: Start painting again. Take piano lessons. Visit the Great Wall. Trace family genealogy. Attend an opera.

So many dreams, so little spare time.

Still, even the simple act of putting pen to paper and listing those dreams can spur hope that the simpler items, at least, could be carved out of moments that might otherwise be frittered away. From there, who knows? Even the grander goals might begin to take shape.

If it's never too early to start a life list, it may never be too late, either. Someday could come tomorrow, or even today.

Wow, Nimsta, you have truly found an amazing article...lol and very inspiring too, i saved it as soon as i saw it...hehe...

My To Do List
1.To be able to expand my cooking, and cook dishes besides just Indian food, such as Thai, Chinese, and Italian (besides easy-to-make pasta).
2.To finally be able to become more content with myself, rather than constantly being so critical and harsh. (everyone, including all my profs always yell at me about that)…I have a habit of assuming I can't do something, before I even try.
3.To go to an amazing grad school, with a perfect GPA.
4.To travel all around the world, and not just India every time I plan a vacation somewhere..and that too go to OTHER places in India, rather than the same places I always go to to visit my family..i'd like to see what goa, rampur, and like even Mumbai look like…oh and ofcourse Venice, Italy…and omg New Zealand!..and well Hawaii too….and Switzerland..everytime I go to Switzerland its only for like THREE hours, I wanna stay there for atleast a week!..and omg London, i definitely wanna study a semester there..
5.To take piano and violin lessons again, I still remember them pretty well..but I've lost touch with both for five whole years.
6.To be able to express my thoughts and feelings with more ease, and to be able to write stories like the nimster….
7.All my life, I've had people come up to me and refer to me as my parents' daughter…one day I'd like people to look at my parents and smile, and be like that's "her" parents!=)
8.I know this is silly, but well okay I know its impossible to be perfect…but alil more than a year ago, I met someone…who became my best friend, I always refered to her as my reflection, but the truth was..she was way better than I can ever be, I've never met anyone like her before, and I know I never will…she was truly an angel, and there were so many things about her, that made her so special…I never even knew such perfect people could even exist…in my eyes she was perfect, unfortunately that best friend of mine, who I was the closest to in this world…isn't even in this world anymore…but she was the biggest inspiration in my life…I wish I could bring something close to such a presence in peoples lives..as she did.
9.I would love to do tons of community service, and go halfway across the world, and help those people who can't even earn enough to eat a good meal=(
10.I'd love to learn MANY different languages, besides hindi, Punjabi, Spanish, abit of Bengali, French, and gujarati…except guj doesn't even count..cuz all I can say is "kem che, and mujaama?!"
11.To witness a rainbow after a beautiful rainfall.
12.To become a better writer, to the extent where I myself can be so proud of it…
13.To meet my best friend in heaven, and tell her that I made all of hers and my dreams come true, and to have that five hour conversation with her…which she promised me a long time a go…
14.To become a part-time interior designer somehow, and a part-time amazing wife and mother to my children (when I do get married..which is like kinda far..i hope)…and an amazing cardiologist at the same time…yeah I know, impractical?..indeed..but then again..they don't call the Sohnster an amazing multitasker for nothing :bubblegum: :bubblegum:
15.I LOVE dancing…I've performed at many different shows…on different songs from like Hindi movies and stuff, I've also learned how to tap dance and all those other types of dancing(jazz, etc. etc.)..since I was like four…and in the past two years I learned how to salsa dance really well..now I'd like to also learn different types of other Latin dances.
16.Have absolutely perfect handwriting all the time, and not just when im in a good mood..lol
17.To invent something no one has ever been able to come up with before, even if its just a different kind of paper airplane?=(
18.To be able to do good to someone, when they are really in need, even if when I was in that position they might have just ignored me.
19.To be patient to the extent that people find it annoying.
20.To meet Hrithik Roshan, and tell him I absolutely love his acting, dancing, and just everything about him, and that to me, hes just perfect…not that it would matter cuz he probly gets 39842934389 fanmails a day telling him that, ehh but I'd still like to tell him that anyway, as I'd be doing it for myself ..lol
21.To meet Pulkit Samrat, and tell him that I wish him the best in the world every day, and that I feel he has the potential to do amazing to this industry.
22.To Fall in love, (filmi-style)..but have it be reality, LOL..
23.To see my baby niece shilpoo grow up infront of me, and have a conversation with her 20 years from now, and be able to tell her every childhood story of hers, and be her best friend.
24. To always be able to be honest to myself, and others, at any cost.
25. To buy this amazing silver convertible with my OWN money.

That's all I can think of right now, but there are probly way more..but I think the list was getting a bit too long anyway..

And aww nimster u wanna come to NYC?..hehe sure come…I'll take u to the BEST places around there :P

Love,
A girl with chota mota sapnas...=)..a.k.a Sohniiiii=)
