Salman Khan had a remarkable comeback with Tere Naam in 2003 and all those who were questioning his box-office status became quiet. He further consolidated his standing with hits like Mujhse Shaadi Karodi, Maine Pyaar Kyon Kiya and No Entry. During that time, Aditya Chopra was expanding Yash Raj productions big time and he was on a golden run with successes like Bunty Aur Babli, Salaam Namaste, Veer Zaara, Dhoom and Hum Tum behind him. Aditya planned 'Chak De! India' with Shimit Amin who was fresh with the stupendous acclaim for his debut directorial venture 'Ab Tak Chappan'. Chak De was written by Jaideep Sahni and it was based on Indian women hockey triumph. As Salman and Yash Raj Productions had never worked together, Aditya was very keen to have Salman playing the main lead 'Kabir Khan' in the movie. Repeated meetings and talks happened between the two parties but they both could not come on common terms with each other.
