Tamil is a 25 year old graduate student at the same University as Thulasi who is 22. Both are in different programs of study but met at an event and started to get to know each other eventually leading them to be together in a relationship. They have been dating for 5 months now and told their parents about the relationship and received their approval.

Part 1

It was a cold winter evening with snow lightly falling from the sky waiting to join the packed snow already on the ground. Thulasi was waiting outside impatiently with her winter apparel on. She looked at her watch every few minutes. She was supposed to meet Tamil over thirty minutes ago at the movie theatres. They planned a movie date tonight but Thulasi was waiting outside the doors for him. She tried calling him again but there was no reply. Getting fed up from waiting outside in the cold, she walked towards her car. She was about to open her car door when suddenly she heard someone call out her name.

Thulasi!

Thulasi!

She turned around knowing exactly who it was. It was Tamil running towards her.

Ta: "Thulasi...hey sorry I'm late. Come let's go..."

Th: "You are late...again!"

Ta: "I said sorry. I was caught in traffic."

Th: "How is it that you are always caught in traffic?!"

Ta: "What do you mean?"

Th: "Tamil, you've been late many times before leaving me waiting for you..."

Ta getting angry: "Like you've never been late before!"

Th: "I admit I have been late but only a couple of times and never for thirty minutes! You're late much more often than I am."

Tamil was getting impatient now.

Ta: "Are we going to watch the movie or stay out here talking?"

Th: "It's too late. The movie started already and plus the tickets are sold out..."

Ta: "What!? Sold out? You should have got the tickets first."

Th was shocked: "And wait here outside not knowing when you will get here!?"

Ta: "Just calm down Thulasi!"

Thulasi shook her head. "I'm tired of waiting for you. I can't even trust you. You're not committed in this relationship!"

Ta yelling: "Don't tell me what I am committed to! Yeah, I was late big deal. Why do you make a big issue over little things? I hate it."

Th: "You know what Tamil, I'm tired of this! I don't need to hear this. It's over!!"

Thulasi turned around and walked back towards her car.

Ta: "Fine! Get lost!! I don't care!!"

Tamil kicked the snow on the ground out of anger then walked back towards his car.

Part 2

Thulasi drove home frustrated, confused and annoyed. She hated the way he spoke to her. She pulled into the driveway and parked her car. Thulasi opened her car door in anger. Not looking down, she stepped on a patch of ice and went falling hard on the icy pavement. She scraped her arm and cheek on the cold ice.

"Aaahh!!" she screamed feeling her skin rip and blood coming out. It took her a few minutes to process what had just happened. She turned and slowly got up, using her car as support. She saw drops of blood in the white snow.

"Aaarrgghhh!" She let out a groan starting to feel pain in her body. She forced herself to get up and held her car door.

"Great! Some day I'm having..." she grumbled.

Not wanting to scare her parents she covered the drops of blood with snow and hid her face with her jacket hood and ran inside to her room quickly telling her parents she's home. She went to the bathroom and cleaned off the blood. She grabbed some medicine and bandages from the medicine cabinet. While applying the medicine to her wound she felt herself shivering and in a lot of pain. She decided to take a hot bath to warm up.

Twenty minutes later, she came out of the bathroom and wore her pyjamas and a sweater. She was tired and hurt both psychically and emotionally. She was walking towards her bed and saw on her table the gift she bought Tamil for Valentine's Day tomorrow. It was a gold Rolex watch and a card. She looked at the card and remembered the day when Tamil expressed his feelings to her. It was a day she would never forget. Tears started to roll down her cheeks stinging the bruises on her left cheek. She then went to bed crying...

Part 3

Meanwhile Tamil was telling Lavanya everything that happened in his room.

Lav: "It's your fault for being late na."

Ta: "Lavanya, don't support Thulasi."

Lav: "I'm just saying the truth. At least you should have texted her or something if you were going to be late'Girls don't like irresponsible guys you know."

Ta: "So what should I do?"

Lav: "You should call her."

Ta surprised: "Now?"

Lav: "Yes na. And go meet her tomorrow and give her the ring you bought for Valentine's Day. Understand?"

Ta shook his head: "Yes yes I got it."

Lav: "Good. Make sure you talk to her. I'm going to bed now. Good night."

Lavanya left the room and Tamil turned his lamp off thinking about what to do...

Part 4

It was the next morning and Thulasi was fast asleep. Her alarm went off hearing music play waking her up. She turned it off and decided to go back to bed pulling her bed cover over her head now. Her grandmother knocked the door and came inside her room.

Gran: "Amma Thulasi. Wake up."

Thulasi moaned, she didn't want to get out of bed or let her grandmother see the wounds on her.

Th: "Paati, I'm really tired. I'm going to sleep longer."

Gran: "Did you have a good time yesterday?"

Th: "Huh? Yeah...I did..."

Gran: "Your parents and I are going to see visit a family then do shopping today. Do you want to come?"

Th: "No Paati, you guys go..."

Gran: "Okay. Mohan and Pavitra are also coming with us today so you'll be alone."

Th: "Okay paati, don't worry I'll be fine'"

Gran: "I'll see you later then." She patted Thulasi's hair unable to see her face then left.

Thulasi slept in for a few hours then finally woke up. She went to the bathroom and took her toothbrush and applied toothpaste on it. She looked into the mirror and suddenly dropped her brush into the sink. She let out a big gasp. Her cheek had turned a dark purple and it was swollen. She turned her elbow and gasped again. Her scrape was also swollen and it looked infected.

"Aaarrgghh gggoooddd!!!" she moaned.

She touched her cheek and elbow and it started to hurt. She wasn't sure what to do. She didn't want to tell her parents as they would get worried. She took a shower then applied some cream to it. Her body felt sore and she put on an extra sweater to keep warm. Dressed in sweat pants and a hoodie, she went to the kitchen after everyone left and made herbal tea from the recipe her paati had taught her. She turned on the kettle and took a mug out. While waiting she went to her room and cleaned it. Seeing again the gift and card on her table, she let out a small frown and went back to the kitchen. On her way back, she heard the doorbell ring. She opened the door and was surprised to see Tamil there.

Part 5

Th: "Tamil?"

Ta: "Oh my god Thulasi what happened!!??"

Th: "What?" she wondered.

Ta: "Your cheek!" Tamil put his hands carefully on her cheek.

Th: "Ooouuuwww!"

Ta: "Sorry...Tell me how you got this..."

Thulasi was hesitant to tell him. "Why are you here Tamil?"

Ta: "Thulasi, what happened?"

Thulasi just looked at her arm now.

Tamil knew she was hiding something. He went closer to her and carefully took her left arm. He lifted her sleeve up and was surprised to see her elbow and arm bruised. He gently touched her arm but she shivered at his touch. He put his fingers on her cheeks rubbing them gently.

Ta: Tell me how you got these Thulasi."

Thulasi let out a breath. "I fell on ice last night..."

Ta: "How?"

Th: "I wasn't looking where I put my foot then suddenly I just fell down."

Ta: "Are you okay? Did you hit your head or anywhere else?"

Th looked down: "Nnooo..."

Ta: "You should get this checked out from the doctor, it looks infected."

Th pulled the sleeve down from her arm. "It's fine really..."

Ta: "Come on Thulasi. I'll take you there. Put on a jacket."

Thulasi knew there was no way getting out of this. She changed her clothes and got ready. She came back downstairs and saw her coffee mug ready to go.

Ta: "I made you herbal tea from the water in the kitchen. It will help you feel better."

Thulasi let out a small smile thinking she was going to do the exact same with the water.

Th: "Thanks..."

Thulasi took her mug and bag and followed Tamil out the door locking it. They were going down the stairs of the front porch and Thulasi wondered what Tamil was doing here. She hoped they were not going to have a fight again like last night.

All of a sudden she missed the second step on the stairs and was about to fall again! Thulasi closed her eyes but realized she never hit the cold ground yet. She opened her eyes to see what happened then saw how Tamil caught her in time and was holding her. Her heart skipped a beat as she looked at him.

Ta: "It's okay, I got you."

Th: "Thanks..."

Ta: "Here hold my hand, it's slippery outside."

Thulasi held Tamil's hand and moved closer to him, automatically feeling warmer and safer inside. They got into Tamil's car and drove to the nearby walk in clinic.

Part 6

At the doctor's office...

Doc: "It's good you came in Thulasi. That cut is pretty bad and it will get infected if we don't clean it properly. The doctor took out her stethoscope. Thulasi was sitting up on the hospital stretcher bed while Tamil was standing by the door.

Doc: "Ok Thulasi, I need you to take off your sweater."

Th: "Take off my sweater? Why?"

Doc: "I can't hear your heartbeat over that thick sweater and I need to clean your arm properly also."

Thulasi glanced at Tamil.

Tamil understood what she was thinking.

Ta: "I'll wait outside." he said.

Thulasi nodded her head then took off her sweater leaving her tank top on while the doctor followed Tamil to get a few things.

The doctor came back inside the room with a needle and was ready to give Thulasi her shot. Thulasi saw the needle and gulped. She hated needles!

Th: Is there any oral medication I can take instead doctor?"

Doc: "Don't worry, it won't hurt, it's a small needle and you need it to make sure you don't get sick."

Thulasi moaned.

Doc: "Just stay still and it won't hurt I promise."

Thulasi's heartbeat increased and she started to budge and quiver on the hospital bed.

Doc: "Thulasi be still."

Th: "Okayy..."

Doc: "Your whole body is moving. I can't give this to you if you move or else the needle might scratch you. Is it okay if I call the man you came with to hold you?

Th was surprised with what she heard. "Who? Tamil?"

Doc: "I guess if that's his name."

Thulasi thought for a minute. How embarrassing she thought, she can't even get a needle at this age. She looked at the doctor then finally nodded her head.

Doc: "Alright hold on."

Tamil was sitting in the waiting room checking his phone.

Doc: "Excuse me Mr. Tamil."

He looked up: "Yes doctor. Is Thulasi okay?"

Doc: "She's fine. Can you come here for a second?"

Tamil put his phone in his pocket and followed the doctor down the hall.

Doc: "I just need to give her a needle but she won't stay still."

They entered the clinic room and Thulasi looked at Tamil a little awkward and embarrassed.

Doc: "I need you to hold her still; can you do that for me?"

Ta confused and puzzled: "Uuhh...sure." He looked at Thulasi and she put her head down avoiding eye contact.

He took off his jacket and left it on the chair then went over to the bed and held her carefully.

Th avoiding eye contact: "You don't have to do this Tamil if you don't want to."

Ta: "Ssshhh Thulasi" he whispered. "You need this injection'..and I want to. Here squeeze my hand. He let out his left hand for her. Thulasi looked at him and smiled back. She put her left hand in his arm while he held her still. Her heart beat was going faster being so close to Tamil. There was a sudden rush of warmth flowing down her body and she just gazed into his beautiful light brown eyes. She was so close to him smelling his fresh scent and feeling protected in his arms.

Doc: "Done!"

Thulasi blinked realizing she just got a needle. "Done? Really?"

Doc: "Yes it's done. You can go. Here's the prescription for the ointment for your face. It will heal the bruise faster and make the mark go away. Be sure to put it twice a day."

The doctor handed over the prescription to Thulasi.

Ta: "Here doctor, I'll take it. I can buy it now."

Tamil went to buy the medicine while Thulasi got dressed. She looked at him as he went out the door.

Doc: "That's quite a guy you got there Thulasi. He seems to care a lot about you. You're lucky."

Thulasi smiled.

Doc: "Now take care of yourself and remember if you have any pain or if the wounds get worse come and see me."

Th: "Thank you doctor."

Thulasi got off the bed and put her jacket on. She took her bag and went outside seeing Tamil coming from the pharmacy.

Ta: "Here's your medication."

Th: "Thanks. How much was it?" and took out her purse from her bag.

Ta: "Don't worry about it. Get inside it's getting cold." He opened the door for Thulasi while she got in. He then got inside and turned on the heater and the music player. It was Valentine's Day and the song playing was Maanipaya.

Thulasi closed her eyes and was listening to the soothing music. Her mind was bringing pictures of the times she spent together with Tamil.

Part 7

Suddenly the car stopped and she opened her eyes. She arrived home. Tamil opened the door and took her to the porch. Thulasi took her keys and opened the door.

Ta: "I guess I better go, you should put the medicine on and rest your arm."

Thulasi didn't want Tamil to go.

Th: "Wait! Come inside...please."

Ta: Aaahhmm sure." Tamil came inside and took off his jacket wiping the snow off his boots.

Th: "Do you want anything to drink?"

Ta: "No no I'm good'thanks anyways."

Tamil and Thulasi just stared at each other letting the awkward seconds pass by. Thulasi wanted Tamil to say something and she wanted to apologize to him also. Tamil wanted to talk to her about everything. Both were moving around the living room slowly.

"I'm sorry." both said at the same time. They looked at each other surprised and let out a small laugh.

Tamil took the lead now. "Sorry about yesterday. It's my fault. I know I've kept you waiting many times before also. I feel bad that you got hurt. I didn't mean what I said yesterday...I was just angry I guess..."

Thulasi moved closer to him. "No no I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. I've been late also a few times."

Both looked at one another.

Ta: "Don't be sorry. It's all good'."

He took Thulasi's hand and pulled gently to hug her. Thulasi hugged him letting tears run down her cheeks.

Th: "I love you. I hate when we fight. I'm scared one day I might lose you like this..."

Ta: "Ssshh Thulasi you won't lose me. I'll always be here for you." Tamil hugged her tighter now then brushed away her tears.

Ta: "Here bring the cream the doctor gave, I'll put it on for you."

Thulasi nodded and took the cream from her bag. Both went and sat on the sofa beside each other. Tamil gently rubbed the cream on her left cheek looking at her. Thulasi looked at him and felt happy inside. He carefully put her hair aside and made sure she was okay.

Ta: "There all done."

Tamil stood up and Thulasi wondered what he was doing.

Ta: "I have something for you."

Thulasi was surprised and didn't know what to expect. Tamil took out a black box from his pocket and opened it.

Ta smiled: "Happy Valentine's Day Thulasi."

Thulasi was shocked and stared at the ring. It was a beautiful silver ring with a jewel in the middle. Tamil took the ring out and placed the box on the coffee table then took Thulasi's right hand and put the ring on. Thulasi started to quiver lost for words.

Th: "It's beautiful'thanks. I have something for you too. Hold on." She quickly ran upstairs to her room and brought the card and box down. Then came running back down.

Th: "Ok close your eyes."

Tamil smiled at her cheerful childish behaviour and closed his eyes. Thulasi took his left arm and removed the watch he was wearing before. She took the gold Rolex watch from the box and put it around his wrist. Tamil opened his eyes and was surprised to see the new watch.

Ta: "Wow it's beautiful."

Th: "Do you like it?"

Ta: "I love it!" Tamil took Thulasi's face in his hands and kissed her forehead then right cheek.

Thulasi then showed him the card and both sat down and read it together.

Valentine's Day reminds me
of the smile I smile

Ta: "It's nice Thulasi thank you." He hugged her on the couch and took her in his arms. Happy Valentine 's Day! Thulasi hugged him wanting this feeling to last forever.

The clock struck 2 pm on the wall.

Ta: "How about we catch the movie we had planned yesterday then go out for dinner tonight."

Th: "I would love that. Hold on. I'm going to text my dad and let him know then I'll get ready."

Tamil smiled. "Let me go home and change and I'll make reservations for tonight."

Th: "Sure."

Ta: "Okay then. I'll be back in about an hour and we'll go."

Th: "Yup" she smiled back.

Tamil made his way to the door and looked back at Thulasi and smiled then left.

Part 8

Thulasi jumped up and down and ran to her room to pick out what to wear. She rummaged through her closet then found the perfect outfit for today.

She quickly freshened up and put on a red dress that went just above her knees. The sleeves were long and went to her wrists. She put on thick black tights and an extra pair of ankle socks before putting her black boots on. She wore a black cardigan on top and did her hair in elegant waves tied back with a silver clip. She looked at herself in the mirror and frowned looking at the scar on her cheek. She put on a bit of light makeup and sprayed some perfume. She was ready. Just in time Tamil rang the doorbell.

Thulasi went to open the door and let him inside. He was dressed in black pants and wore a grey v-neck sweater on top with the new watch on his left arm.

Ta: "Wow Thulasi...you look beautiful."

Th: "Thank you" she blushed.

Ta: "I booked tickets and made reservations for tonight. We can leave when you're ready."

Th: "I'm ready just give me a second."

She put on her black pea coat and beige scarf around her neck followed by her beige mittens. She took her black clutch bag and put it across her shoulders. She was ready to go. Tamil and Thulasi hugged each other and Thulasi kissed Tamil's cheek walking out the door for an evening of love and magic together.
