'I won't do Jhalak again'

Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Sanjay Leela Bhansali remains unperturbed by his personal favourite Shveta Salve's defeat on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. "Why should I take Shveta's defeat or for that matter Mahesh's ouster personally? People presumed Mahesh was a favourite because he's a fellow filmmaker, but it doesn't work that way. Did you see any partiality in the way we gave marks to Mahesh? I'm no great friend of Mahesh.

We have a mutual respect for each other's work. I'm there to do a job. I'm not concerned with the profession of the dancers, only their performances. Not just me, even Farah Khan and Shilpa Shetty gave more 10s to Mahesh than any other contestant. That's because he was absolutely entertaining and he never missed a beat."

Khatta meetha

But as far as skills go, Sanjay refuses to rank Shveta and Mona one over the other. "I was sad when Shveta didn't win.

I think Shveta has all the qualities of a big screen heroine. The last of the
truly great dancing heroines was Madhuri Dixit. But I also love Mona. She's so spontaneous, spunky and all there. I'm very happy for her."

Sanjay confesses that he's had the time of his life on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. "I was very sceptical about doing a reality show. A lot of people felt I was too intense to be on the home medium and that it would affect my public image. But I don't have a public image!

When I took it up, I enjoyed it immensely. I truly enjoyed the company of Farah and Shilpa, and Archana and Parmeet Sethi's anchoring. Now that it's come to an end, I feel a little sad. Watching the contestants come and go, climb many steps and then fall, it was quite an experience."

Not again

Sanjay reveals that the only bitter experience on the show was Akashh Deep Sehgal. "But we shall not discuss it anymore."

Farah and Sanjay share a very special bonding. She would insist on digging into his wallet each time she wanted to reward a contestant.

Laughs Sanjay, "We've shared something special for a long time. We've struggled and achieved something in our respective fields. And in spite of our huge differences of opinion along the way, we've reached a comfort level where she can dig into my wallet! I wouldn't allow anyone else to do it."

Given a chance would he judge a television contest again? "No," comes the terse reply.
