A very special day
The ringing of Shiv's cell phone distracted Anandi. She rushed to pick it up, hoping that she hadn't been too late. The way she was the past few days, it would be no wonder if she had missed hearing previous calls, if any.
It was Maahi, calling up to wish them a Happy Valentine's day. They talked for a while. "Shiv, must have gotten ready by now. Let me go check" she said into the phone and walked towards their bedroom. "Shiv, its Maahi bhaiyya, he wants to talk to you." She said as she entered the room. Shiv was done with his bath but was struggling with the shirt buttons. Anandi rushed over.
His hand still hurt. The brawl with Ratan Singh's goons had injured Shiv badly on his arm. Though he wouldn't admit he was not a hundred percent fit still. Anandi handed the phone to her bewildered husband as she proceeded buttoning his shirt.
"Maahi, how are you?'" Shiv asked. "I'm good. Just a bit sad that my kitty of 500 rs. is dwindling." Shiv chuckled. "But the reason I called was to check on you. How are you bhaiyya?" "Can't complain. After all I am in very good hands." Anandi felt her color rising up, as she sensed Shiv's eyes on her. Why were these buttons so tricky? They kept slipping from her sweaty fingers. His warm presence, in such proximity and the faint overtones of his cologne were already making her go weak in the knees.
"Bhaiyya do u remember what day it is today?" Shiv racked his brains. Now whose birthday, anniversary had he forgotten. "Its Valentine's day bro. The day to celebrate your love. I hope you have something special in mind for my dear Bhabhi." "Maahi I don't believe in all these fads. You love your loved ones every single day. Why should there be a special occasion to display it?" Anandi was all ears, hardly noticing that she was done buttoning up ages ago. All her plans for the day seemed to be in a jeopardy. What was she to do?
"Anandi, if you had left well alone I would have reached the office by now." Shiv's teasing was nothing new. He had caught onto her absentmindedness of late and didn't leave a single chance to pull her leg. Maahi's call was over and he was watching his petite wife lost in her own thoughts, clinging onto the button of his shirt. She was looking exceptionally well today. But when didn't she.
She was wearing a yellow saree, a gift from him. It was lending a beautiful glow to her already radiant face. Her long hair were snaking past her slender waist. His eyes again wandered to her face, to see her eyes still out of focus.
Anandi moved her hands away at the sound of his mild laughter and stood a little apart, her eyes averted.
"And take Pappu's help if you have to. The thing is if today again I have to finish off three tiffins of daal, the second day in row, I might as well call in sick." He gave a cheeky grin as Anandi looked up at him. Hastily she made her way out of the room.
Sometimes Shiv was too much. Anandi muttered as she entered the kitchen. Though she really had to snap out of it. But how could she. Was this something you snap out of?
Ever since that fateful day in the hospital everything between them had changed. Shiv had been jumped upon by Ratan Singh's goons, as he was making his way back from an official visit. The revenge for having intervened on Ganga's behalf and having taken away his son. Ratan Singh had at that time managed to escape the hands of the law, and it seemed he still hadn't come to his senses. The resulting fracas had left Shiv with a severely bleeding hand and some other minor injuries. All the goons, along with their master had been arrested hence, and with God's grace Shiv wasn't in any danger.
Anandi had nearly fainted at the sight of the wound. Her heart had been racing all the time that the doctors were with him. She longed to be with him, and feel his reassuring presence. Those terrifyingly scary moments before she laid her eyes on him, her world had spun before her eyes. The blinding truth hit her then, that she could not live a single moment without him, without his love encompassing her entire being. She needed him in her life, in her heart. She needed him to be there and tell her that things would be better, that together they would ride through all storms that came their way. She wanted to see his wonderful smile, feel his strong arms around her.
All her previous worries, insecurities had melted away in an instant, in the face of the possibility that she could have lost him then, forever. She had been a fool all along and it had taken such a drastic event for her to realise her love for him. Now each and every waking moment her mind kept going back to that one person who had now become her reason for existence.
With care she packed the tiffin and asked Pappu to carry it to the jeep, along with Shiv's office stuff. She had lots of other things to take care of today.
