They had Azad through IVF surrogacy. If they wanted a kid, couldn't they have adopted one? Surrogate mothers face extreme exploitation in India, there is not even a proper law to ensure their rights and security. Many are kept in inhuman conditions, made reproductive machines (sometimes they don't even allow them to recover after a delivery...and go on to give a new implant within 2 weeks!), they face so much social stigma, many are underpaid, under-fed, kept in isolation for sake of their, kid's and client's privacy.

One should watch Savdhaan India episode on plight of surrogate mothers in India. It's spine chilling and makes the viewer uncomfortable.

One can choose sex of the child in this. Aamir-Kiran (for all their so called liberal outlook) seem to have chosen a boy. So much for show off social messages on sex selection!

I am not implying that the surrogate who bore Azad must've faced same exploitation as surrogates in India usually do. I feel Khan family must have taken care of her. But by making this public, they popularised this IVF surrogacy and nowadays several couples in India are opting for the same and many clinics offering this treatment have mushroomed. God knows how ordinary surrogates are treated...

I don't think they did the right thing by popularising it that too in a country like India.

IVF surrogacy is a very controversial issue. It makes a business out of motherhood. I don't think it should be allowed until and unless there are strong and detailed laws in place for security, health and rights of a surrogate (which India lacks).

All respect to people like Sushmita who choose to adopt a child and give a family to a child who needs it.
