The youngsters will come up though. You have to give them some time. The 45+ folks have built this kind of popularity over 20 years of work. The new folks are only about 5 years old max. It's unfair to them to expect them to have that kind of popularity already.

The Khans/45+ folks can't go on forever...and there will come a day when the audience will stop accepting them as 25 year olds too. So they really need to be more careful about the kind of films the choose, the roles they play to extend their careers. AB Sr survived because he finally accepted that he needed to do something else, Rajesh Khanna did not and that's why he didn't work till the day he died.

Nobody has mocked young actors, they can take as much time as they want, but if u gonna mock Khans, kumar, devgn, then comparisons will be drawn between them n young actors.

Salman in just 5-7 years given 2 ATBB, many Hits, Srk also 1 ATBB n many Hits, plus Aamir also... now if u gonna mock them at this age, whereas Young actors have not been able to give 1 SOLO MEGA HIT on their own... Only Hrithik is somewhat got reasonable success, rest all has done in either Multistar or just smaller films...

Also mocking of Big B, Rajesh Khanna has been for very huge age difference, i mean they were almost 65+ when they did films like Nishabd, Waffa.

While Saif-Bebo has just 10 yrs age difference, still harsh mocking is done like they r father-daughter.

@chillmahaul- watch his 'diamond necklace' or 22 female kottayam.
He was a doc in the first one and a pimp in the next
he is jokingly called emraan hashmi of malluwood these days.

I am sure u know about the Disney series Hannah Montana...My daughter used to watch it and so sometimes I used to watch it with her...Now Hannah's older brother played the role of a High school teenager...So one day my daughter asks me...Mommy do u know how old he is ?? He is 30 years old...My jaw dropped...from that day onwards he always looked older to me...I just couldn't accept him as a High school kid...so I don't know...maybe our mind plays this trick on us too sometimes...

What?! Is it true?

Maybe awareness does have its role. We know Amitabh's 70 and a grandpa in real life, so we perhaps judge him accordingly and the bias might come in mind when he attempts younger roles or is presented as young.

But at times even actor doesn't come across as young. Like that Dilip Kumar film, Bairaag. I still don't know how old he was when he did that film. Yet whenever I've watched it, I've felt he looked odd as the young, cool lover boy. He played his own father in it. And looked more believable as the dad than the son (though at that time he wasn't even *that* old so to play dad to a grown man). He looked like Leena Chandavarkar's uncle in Saare sheher mein aapsa koi nahi song. I didn't know ages of either actors yet I could sense considerable age difference between them when I'd first watched the film on TV.

Kamal usually plays a 30+ role in his movies , a class actor and never makes me cringe.
Im myself a huge fan of Venkatesh, he is 52 and usually plays a 30+ role and never a college gng guy sorta roles and him being aged is usually addressed in his movies as a joke that he is aged and nt married yet.The roles that they choose arent cringe worthy ..

And dint ppl accept a Sanjay Dutt as a medical student in Munnabhai?? Aamir as a student in 3I . Both fitted properly to their roles .

Rajani is notworshipedfor his movies, basically he has helped the poor too much and their is a reason forworshipinghim so much in the south which no other actor gets it. His movies are sually taken as pure entertainment with no logic..

Sanjay Dutt's age etc. were all shown to be faked in Munnabhai MBBS. He did not play an actual fresher. Aamir was 45. Unlike an actor like Rajini or Kamal who seem to get acceptance as conventional heroes even after/around 50/60.

Amitabh had to begin playing dad in Bollywood once he hit 60. And his hero attempts after 50 are all flops cum jokes.

A hero in Bollywood seems to have comparatively early expiry date...

In Kerala we do mock mammooty & mohanlal a lot when we see them act with young girls. Now a days most of their movies have flopped (other than a very few which had brilliant scripts.)
but yes,in TN, they have been known to build temples and its easy to win an election if u r superstar

I should have made it more clear. But I do know TN doesn't represent whole of South.

You guys do mock Mohanlal and their films flop? Okay.

The way media projects it, every star in every state down South seems to be this invincible god-like figure. So maybe I was influenced by that impression.

This is why I had invited firsthand views from people well versed with ongoings there to make stuff clearer. Thanks for response.

I wasn't just talking about mockery on account of age. But more about audience accepting a hero irrespective of age. The trend is not for all actors in every state then so it means the difference in audience response in North and South is not that stark as I'd thought it to be.

We may sometimes mock at our films which feature a 40+ actor romancing a just 20+ heroine, yet we accept them as the Kings of Bollywood. A fact which cannot be overshadowed!
This is a striking feature of all the industries all over the world. The older the star, the greater is the stardom!
The audience accepted Cheeni Kum as a film because the actors were all graceful for their age and so was the story. But of course a film like Nishabd will be dismissed for it brings forth the bad cinema, and not because it showed an elderly man romancing a 16 year old girl!
If film-makers make films with oldies, who minds watching them? But of course, as long as they offer us good cinema.

@Radhe

It wasn't about why mocking happens. It was supposed to be about why Bollywood's reigning stars aren't accepted as conventional heroes as long (age-wise) as some actors down South. Just wanted to know difference in mentality.

Now some respondents here said that the actors do play 30+ even if they are past 50 (or in Rajini's case, 60+) in real life and they don't mind as long as they "look" good enough. Same doesn't exactly apply to Bollywood. I wasn't bringing young stars in discussion. Rather wondering why, an iconic and much-loved star like Amitabh can't get acceptance (if they make him look good enough) as hero among Bolly audiences. He's worshipped but after a point he was also compelled to change tracks.

@Gunjan

Nishabd was also protested against because of age difference and whole concept. It was bad cinema but it's still a butt of jokes as a love story of a "tharki buddah". Most people were aghast at the idea of a 60 year old falling in love with his daughter's friend. I don't think this concept would've received acceptance even if it was handled better.

Cheeni Kum was more acclaimed and accepted. Guess audience could stretch their "acceptance levels" this much and also presentation, sensitive handling of subject worked for it. Still, Bachchan has to play his age in such films. Unlike some others he couldn't get away with playing a 30+ guy, regular hero, replete with conventional masala of typical love stories or potboilers. He still has to keep his age in mind.

The cause of this difference was something that intrigued me.
