***Part 3***
I was telling my Beeji all about my new found love for cooking and baking while walking back to the house. Like I expected that made her very happy. I like it when she is proud of me. It would be nicer if my parents would be proud of me too, but that is extremely unlikely, maybe I should discover a new country or something, like Columbus. But then, I can totally imagine my dad saying "This is so small, you should have gone after something bigger." But my Beeji likes the smallest of the smallest things I do. Sometimes she appreciates things that I don't even realize I do.
I was telling her about the new pet parrot which I had to leave in London because they would not allow it on the plane. "I call it thotha Beeji, I taught him to say so many words. I even taught him to scold Nancy when she comes into my room without knocking." I told her, laughing and skipping around her in circles, as we walked back towards the house through the garden.
"Bas gudiya, save some bak bak for tomorrow also." She chided me. "By the way how is Nancy?"
"I don't know, she is okay, missing me terribly I am sure." I replied with a chuckle.
Nancy was my nanny since I was a little baby. She and Beeji became very good friends though they didn't understand a word of what each of them spoke. I found it very cute. I like Nancy but she is my Mom's right hand, always keeping a tab on things and reporting every little dirt she could pick on me. Once I realized that, I started to fool her into thinking that I am upto something really big. Like this one time, I lead her to believe that I started to smoke and laid back happily enjoying the sight as her with my mom ransacked the whole house upside down searching to find proof against me to that effect.
I appreciate her perseverance though, she still is hopeful that she will find my secret stash one day. I guess she must the one person missing me in London. Her whole life had been about figuring out what I am upto next. She must be pretty lost now.
I became very quiet as I entered the house again. I somehow don't like being around a lot of people, especially when they eye me like I am some kind of trouble. I looked at the kids lazing outside on the porch. I think they are always together, hanging out. I looked at Virat aka Vilu, hoping to get a chance to apologize to him. He looked at me for a second and went back to his video game.
Ignoring me. Like I care...
Dude, Manvi seeks out only once, too bad, you lost your chance.
I followed Beeji to her room. I hugged her from behind as she was looking through her closet fishing for something. "Beeji, I am still your favorite right??" I asked, fully knowing her answer. The old lady adored me to death.
"Haan meri shaitaan!" she kissed me on the cheek.
"I knew it. That idiot Virat was saying that he is your favorite now. I want to see his face when he hears this!!" I laid on Beeji's bed relaxed, hands under my head looking the ceiling.
"Nahi Beta. Don't trouble Virat. He is my favorite too. You don't know what he went through this year. His Beeji died of a heart attack. Virat beta was so close to Sheetalji. He did not leave her bedside during the last month. Everyone tried to take him away, comfort him, but he was relentless. He opened up to me. He said he sees his Beeji when he talks with me. Kitna pyaar hai uss ladke main! Usse tang matt kart tu." she said as my heart sank. I felt bad for saying those things to him to back off from my B and to go find his own Beeji.
"Why don't you wear this? I got this for you last birthday. We will go to the Vadhera house and meet everyone there?" Beeji gave me a gift bag dragging me out of my thoughts.
"Wow! A gift??? What is it?" Arghhh. It was an Indian dress. "Thank you Beeji, but I will wear it later" I said as Beeji made a face.
"What's wrong with this dress????????" I asked as she looked disappointed.
Oh God, the blackmails have already started. Look at her face. "Fine. I will change." I snatched it from her.
Beeji showed me my room. It wasn't bad, it was spacious and it had two big windows. That's probably the Vadhera house I see on one side and the garden on the other side. Jeevika and Tanu came along with Beeji and sat on my bed trying to talk with me. I escaped making an excuse to freshen up. The warm shower felt exhilarating after the long tiresome day. It was almost dinner time and I wore the dress Beeji gave me. I looked at myself in the mirror. It's too shiny for me, a cute pink, but way too large. It totally engulfed my small structure. Did Beeji really think I would have gained 30 some pounds after she left?
Eh! Like I care. Its just for a couple of hours. This will make Beeji happy.
"Wow! You look so nice in this dress." They both looked at me in the mirror as I tied my hair into a piggy tail. I took a second to examine these cousins of mine. There is something in these girls that is upsetting me. Do they smile like this all day? What are they so happy and perky about? I gave them a fake smile and sat beside them. They told me about their college and school respectively. They were going on and on and I was yawning; Tanu about her Barbie doll collection and Jeevika about the new dresses that she recently got.
My phone started ringing. Saved by the bell, I ran away from their chatter. It was my mom. I answered it excitedly "Mom? Could you hold on for a minute?"
"Hey girls, I need to take this." I looked at them. They just sat there and said "Ok" looking at me intently. "Do you mind ???????" I signaled them to leave. Duh!! Their faces fell as they left the room. Jeeez. These people needed Manners 101.
"What's up ma?..." I continued locking the door, but I couldn't talk another word. It quickly turned into a one side conversation. Her highness asked me to behave and not trouble anyone here. "Don't answer back, be adaptable, be pleasant" in short be a freaking dumbo barbie doll. It went on and on. I waited for her call all day and now I cannot wait for her to shutup.
"You know what, I am fine over here, I reached safely, and no I am not missing anyone. Thanks for asking. You have a great life there without me, with you work and friends and fancy parties. Please do not call me back! I WILL BE FINE ON MY OWN!" I screamed at her and threw the phone on the ground.
"Mannu..." I heard Beeji call me at the door. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down to look normal. I didn't want to worry Beeji.
We went to the Vadhera house. The whole monkey gang followed me except Virat. He was nowhere. I met the clones of Chaudhary family in Vadhera house. They both were so similar. I just nodded and smiled as they all commented how much better I look, now that I was out of those skimpy vilayati kapre. I wandered along the halls behind Jeevika, Smitha and Tanu as they excited gave me a house tour. What is there to see? Isn't this the exact copy of their house? Phew! I saw a staircase on my side and slipped out to get a few minutes of peace and quiet.
I hopped up on the stairs, two to three at a time and it lead to the terrace. It was an amazing view. Cool evening breeze, clear starry sky. I started humming a tune and then I realized I wasn't alone. There was a big water tank and I heard someone talking on the other side. I slowly tipped over and peeped to see who it was. It was Vilu monkey.
"No my butterscotch, you look mindblowingly sexy in that dress." I heard him say. I looked at my dress puzzled.
"No sugar, you don't look fat at all." He continued.
Yeah, no kidding. But why is he telling me all these things?
"Eh Hello!!!" I waved at him.
He looked at me and screamed like he saw a ghost. He quickly regained his head and signaled me not to talk. "No baby, I am fine. No I didn't scream. Why would I scream? No, I didn't scream because you said you were going to do the dance thing. No. Ofcourse, you are a great dancer pumpkin. Maybe it's your neighbor screaming. Achha sweetie, I will call you right back. Yes..byeee..bahbye..bye. No you hang up first. No you. No you. You first."
I cannot listen to this parade of a conversation anymore. I snatched the phone and cut it off. "How hard was that??" I asked him.
"Hello? what is your problem?" he asked me, seeming a little relieved for what I did.
"Never sneak up on me like that." He added.
"Kyu? Vilu ko dar lagtha hai ??" I said laughing. I wanted him to know I didn't forget my childhood friend and I remember everything, infact very vividly.
He looked at me shocked. "What did you call me?"
"Vilu, Vilu the langoool. I remember everything. It's not my fault you changed your name. And anyways you should have told me at the airport itself." I said walking past him, looking at the creepers running down; they smelt so sweet. I turned back in a jerk as Virat was laughing holding his stomach, like a drunken monkey. "Bahahahahaahah..." he was rolling on the ground now.
"What's wrong?" I asked looking around. "What's so funny?"
"Viluuu??????????????? Langoool?????" he continued laughing like someone released a can of laughing gas.
"Dude..the jokes on you!" I tried to explain.
"You used to call me Vilu, because...hahaahahahaaha...you ...hahaha..couldn't pronounce 'r' ...oh my god, I am going to die laughing.. He continued hahaha..you thought that was my name??...you used to pronounce all your r's as l's LANGOOL..bahahahaaha
What? Are you out of your mind? That's crazy. Wait it wasn't Vilu?..it was Viru?
Bahaahahahaaha..no my name is Vilat!!
"I did not talk like that. STOP LAUGHING you ape..."
"valna kya????????? Malogiii Manvi???" hahahahahahaha
langoor ke mama...you are so dead in my hands.I stomped my foot and went to squeeze his neck. He stopped me again holding my arm "Chipkali..should I call my bodyguard?" he asked finishing up with his laugh riot.
I remembered the giant devil of a dog and stopped still. I turned away, folding my hands, trying to calm myself down. I have never been embarrassed like this.
He came and stood before me trying not to laugh "tum sabse pange kyu lethi ho? Kutte ko toh chod do yaar."
"Listen, I don't want to fight with anyone here, I don't even want to be here. I hate each and everything in here. I hate you, I hate your stupid dog and your stupid monkey tribe."
"Haan..hum sab tum se bohot pyaar karte hai na?? mare ja rahe hai tum se milne ke liye." "Stop sulking, if you go around with that sullen face. Nobody will even talk to you."
"Karna bhi nahi hai mujhe.."
"Acha? Then what will you do here? Bhajan keertan? Don't you want to make friends?"
I looked at him as he looked at me amused like I am some kind of a pushover. This guy is handing me insults upon insults and I am standing mute and helpless. What is wrong with me? "No, I don't need friends. I DON'T NEED ANYONE!!" I retorted angrily.
He stopped laughing and his face became very grave all of a sudden. "Manvi???? Why are you crying? I was just pulling your leg yaaar. Chill, it's all in good fun."
I turned around. I wanted to vanish from there. But, sadly, there were other people waiting for me downstairs. They cannot see me like this. "Go away! Leave me alone!!" I yelled quickly wiping my tears away and sitting in the corner on the other side of the tank.
He came, sat beside me and blew a long low whistle. Why doesn't he leave me alone? Within thirty seconds, the devil appeared. Seriously? Bas isi ki kami thi!! "Get out of here!!" I screamed at the top of my voice, getting up. But, Virat pulled me down and I sat back with a thud.
He whistled again and Kutta came and sat still, right in front of me as I plastered myself to the wall behind, scared. Virat went over to it, hugged it from behind and said something in its ear and the next second, the stupid dog pounced on me and started licking my face drenching me in its dribble. "Ewww..I just showered, get off me you slimy bas***d! It was making me laugh, ticking with its paws gently. I tickled back his tummy. It rolled on the ground and lifted his paws in the air doing a little dance.
I cracked up loudly looking at his drama.
"We are not that bad you know. As you are stuck with us anyways, you can be our friend. We never let our friends cry. Right K? " Virat asked Kutta and he barked once looking at me with its tongue dangling down.
"I don't cry." I replied right back.
"Right..Ofcourse you don't"
"I have a parrot called Thotha." I continued a conversation which I never started ignoring everything else. I do that. When I find something awkward, I ignore it altogether and move on. I am emotionally handicapped that way.
"Accha? Who names a parrot Thotha? I mean how original!!!! I guess that makes you Manvi the weirdo." He laughed.
"NO it doesn't. The name makes it exotic." I said proudly.
"Kutta would have eaten your exotic in one bite. It's probably safe in London."
"Hmm..Whom were you buttering on the phone? Butterscotch??? Pumpkin??" I nudged him.
"None of your business. Don't you have manners? eavesdropping? Chi!"
"Come on! pretty or s**tty?"
"None of your damn business." " Let's talk about your tattoos. Does Beeji know? By the way, you can have two other people fit inside that dress you are wearing." He kept on blabbering as we walked downstairs where he initiated me into the gang. Kutha followed behind me wagging its tail. Jeevika gave me her new bangles which were totally out of the world. Viren ruffled my hair like I was a dog, big brotherish I guess. Dabbu and Shlok were real jokers, always making jokes and funny imitations of the elders. All in all, it was an okayish group.
So I made friends today. Thanks to langoor! It wasn't that bad a day afterall. I might just survive.
