Dibakar Banerjee signs up with Yash Raj Films

By Subhash K. Jha, Jan 9, 2013 - 10:15 hrs IST

In what could be regarded as a major breakthrough in the alliance between commercial and off-mainstream cinema, avant-garde filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee who has earlier made out-of-the-box films for prominent production houses like PVR (Shanghai) and Balaji Films (Love Sex Aur Dhokha) has now moved into the super-league.

Last week at a hush-hush meeting, Dibakar finally shook hands with Yash Raj's team after weeks of negotiation. He would be directing his next film, a whodunit set in Kolkata, for Yash Raj Films.

Dibakar is part of Aditya Chopra's out-of-the-box talent-hunt for his production company. One learns from a reliable source at Yash Raj that negotiations are on with several other prominent young established filmmakers.

Getting Dibakar Banerjee into Yash Raj was not easy. According to sources, the director, known to make austerely budgeted films, drove a really hard bargain with Yash Raj.

Says the source, "Yash Raj was keener to have Dibakar on board than he was to join Yash Raj. Intense negotiations went on before the deal was finally closed last week. Apparently, Dibakar has agreed to direct a film for Yash Raj at a fee of Rs.5 crores.

Says a source, "Dibakar wouldn't settle for any less. Yashraj requested him to scale down his remuneration. But Dibakar who has openly spoken of how budget constraints cramped his style of functioning to the extent that he couldn't take his entire Shanghai team to the last IIFA awards, was very clear that if he agreed to work with a well-placed production company, he would be paid well."

Repeated attempts to reach Dibakar and the Yash Raj spokesperson failed.

Surprised, Adi likes my kind of cinema

Dibakar Banerjee tells us how exactly he reacted when Chopra signed him up for a three-film deal

Film enthusiasts and the fraternity were taken by surprise when YRF announced that they are signing up Dibakar Banerjee for a three-film deal. Speculations have been rife since then about what could have possibly brought about the unlikely alliance of the maker of LSD and Khosla Ka Ghosla and the production house known for its glossy, high-octane projects.

In a conversation with Mumbai Mirror, Dibakar says that he too was surprised when the alliance happened. "Looking at YRF's filmography, well I must say I was pleasantly surprised when Adi told me he likes my kind of cinema." But he points out that the production house has been shifting its focus. "I have realised that they respect talent immensely. In our first meeting itself, Adi and I realised we were on the same page. We have similar creative goals. We both love cinema, which works also for an international audience," he says.

The three-film deal will see Dibakar work with the production house as a director and co-producer for two films, while the third one will be directed by Kanu Behl. Behl has written Dibakar's LSD.

Rubbishing sceptics who have been speculating on whether YRF will interfere with his creative vision, something Dibakar is fiercely possessive about, he says: "Adi told me 'If we get involved with the creative aspect of your film, what is the point in teaming up with you?' I think I have answered your question."

There have been unsubstantiated reports abut Dibakar driving a hard bargain with the production house, asking for a whopping Rs 15 crore for the three films. But Dibakar laughs it off: "These figures are absolutely wrong. The budget hasn't yet been decided, how do you expect me to quote my fees? I focus on content and quality. I am not in the betting game -itne mein baanaunga, itna business karegi meri picture. Please!" While all this has been welcomed by the fans and followers of Dibakar, here's something that could be a dampener.

Contrary to reports that his next is a whodunit based in Kolkata, Dibakar insists he has not decided on the genre yet, and prefers to ramp up the suspense like the astute filmmaker that he is.

Yash Raj Films And Dibakar Banerjee To Co-Produce Three Films

Wednesday 9th January 2013 13.00 IST

Press Release

YASH RAJ FILMS unveils its plans, for what promises to be a long term strategy of the Studio, by announcing a three film co-production deal with DIBAKAR BANERJEE PRODUCTIONS.

"This is new, promising and exciting. Adi and I have different and individualistic creative visions while sharing a tremendous synergy in our ambition to take Indian cinema to new milestones at home and abroad. We decided to embark on this venture almost immediately after our very first meeting." said Dibakar.

"I respect quality, consistency and true professionalism. YRF stands for that. Given my style of film making and YRF's tremendous presence, reach and experience, this association will merge our respective expertise to create really trendsetting yet entertaining content for a really wide audience. I see tremendous potential in Adi's concerted plans for getting into co-production agreements with diverse, like-minded filmmakers."

While specifics of the slate are still being decided, the arrangement entails that two of the films will be directed by Dibakar and the third by his long-time associate and the writer of the path-breaking Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Kanu Behl.
