TV personalities were asked to comment on the portrayal of women on screen.

Surekha Sikri: The kind of people who did this don't sit around watching serials. How they have been brought up plays a bigger role than anything else. Do you think if these men had a better upbringing, went to school and had good role models, they would have been like this? The society is rotten and these people are a reflection of it. There is a certain callousness that has crept into our system. Kids aren't taught to be kind, considerate and respectful, but to be competitive and make money.

Anoop Soni : What is shown in serials is 99 per cent a reflection of society. We show traditions that are being followed since years. We need to change our mindset and teach our kids not to treat women like second-rate citizens. In our show Balika Vadhu, we have not shownwidows as outcasts. Next week in Crime Patrol, we will feature the Delhi gang-rape victim's case. We need to create an atmosphere where people are scared of committing a crime, and on other hand, teach kids how to respect women around them.

I agree with Surekha ji that upbringing plays a major role here..

Still I feel there should be a control on what is shown on TV and in Movies as the youth these days is very much impacted by television..

VIP

Thanks for posting this article.

I agree with Surekhaji about the upbringing part.

Since we do not have control on what is being shown on tv and media because they are reflection of what is happening in the society we can only provide a counter view to our children and youngsters so that they grow up to be adults with balanced views and attitudes.

To counter the influence of media we have to ensure that they develop their own thought process which help them to accept or reject what is being shown.

I wish people would look at the real problem... the lack of education! It starts at home and then at schools. If you teach about sex, parents get upset about the fact their children are being corrupted. If you teach about various cultures, they talk of corruption. Its the small minds that need to be fixed first. And this can only happen with an constant social and intellectual education. Rape is about POWER... not lust. Rape myths exist and hardly any one I have come across even knows what those are... sad.

Appy I agree that we do not have control over what should be shown on TV..
According to me to some extend the potrayal of women is not proper, In most of the serials women is either shown as victim or a vamp..how could we expect ppl to respect women if we show them like this 😳

thank u sooo much for sharing it..

i think these kind of crimes has a big relationship with poverty too..
we always say about good education..but in some places people's r so poor that they can not afford good education for their children..for them, survival at any cost & daily bread are more important than education..so they prefer sending their child at work bcoz this will at least help them in earning some money..they thinks that it is better than wasting a whole day in school earning nothing!...that is why mid-day meal and some other schemes r there..but still people don send their kids at school..bcoz midday meal will feed one, what about rest of the family! now, who will convince them that education is more important? 🤔

also, many a times educated people has done such crimes too..i felt that education and good upbringings r very much needed...but the mentality towards women needs to change in this society first! every school should start a separate class to teach students to respect women!
