Part 4: The Escape
"Have you ever considered that maybe you should get a haircut now? I think it's been years!" Humaira reached up to pull Ayaan's hair but he dodged her.
"No. I like my hair, thank you! And please go away now; I'm playing Call of Duty!"
"You look like a girl." Humaira pouted, putting her hands on her hips.
"Still better-looking than you, Humaira begum!" Ayaan winked at her.
Humaira scoffed. "You wish! Honestly, Ayaan, go get a haircut! There's a very important day coming up and I want you to look good for it."
"What important day?" Ayaan questioned, "Ahh, Humaira! You got me killed!"
"Our - Um. Don't worry about it. I'll tell you after you get your haircut! Just go! Call and make an appointment right now!" Humaira threw him an old phone diary.
"Humaira begum," Ayaan sighed. "The things I do for you..." Ayaan shuffled through the diary. "Okay, I'm only getting a trim and that's it. Girls really like my long hair." He lifted his collar up.
"Riight." Humaira rolled her eyes.
"Kool Kuts for Kids? Hi, I'd like to make an appointment."
Humaira looked up at him in horror. "What are you doing?!" She mouthed, the latter word getting a bit squeaky.
"Yeah, it's for a big kid. Really big kid, actually. Thanks! I'll see you then. Bye!" Ayaan pressed the off button on his phone.
"You went to that barber shop as a kid, Ayaan!" Humaira snatched the phone book from his hands. "I'm calling a real barber's shop."
"They are real, Humaira begum!" Ayaan quipped.
"Yeah, for kids! I'm calling abu's barber and getting you an appointment." Humaira flipped through the pages.
"Um...yeah, that's not happening. In case you haven't seen your abu, there's something lacking on his head. It's called hair." Ayaan seized the book back.
"Haha. Very funny." Humaira reached for the book but Ayaan held it up high.
"Ayaan! Stop being such a -!"
"They give lollipops and model cars too after they're done cutting your hair!" Ayaan grabbed Humaira's dupatta.
"You are such a big baby! And to think, you're legal age to even vote now! No wonder our country's going nowhere!" Humaira shook her head, removing her dupatta from his hands. Humaira got up on the sofa and quickly grabbed the book.
"Humairaaa!" Ayaan called out. "I like my hair!"
"Well, I don't. I'm taking an appointment for 5:30. Please go and get your nasty hair cut." Humaira dialled the number quickly before he could snatch the phone away. Something's up, he felt, Humaira's been acting a bit strange. Her graduation wasn't until another semester. Her birthday wasn't here either. And nobody else's birthday was coming up. What important occasion was she talking about?

Humaira looked down at her bed. She had her clothes laid out and everything was going according else was going according to her plan. She had sneaked out during her lunch hour and bought a pair of body-hugging blue jeans from the mall. The retail girl had ensured her that they looked great on her, but she hated the clingy feeling they gave her. She'd also bought a white V-neck shirt that wasn't as tight, thankfully, but it was a tad bit too short when she lifted her hands up or bent down.
As she wore the outfit, she felt the absence of her dupatta. She felt completely bare without it. She sighed loudly. She had to do this. For Ayaan. She grabbed one of Ayaan's over-sized sweaters from her closet that she'd stolen a while ago and covered her outfit underneath it. She grabbed a black dupatta and covered her head as well just in case. She would creep out the back kitchen door to make sure nobody would see her. She sprayed her hair with Ayaan's favourite hairspray. She's always felt him trying to catch a whiff of the fruity smell when she wore it. She looked at her face in the mirror and applied an extra coat of mascara and a little more of blush than she was used to. And finally, she put a few coats of lip gloss on her lips. Urgh, the things I do for you, Ayaan, she thought but there was still a hint of smile on her face.
************************************************************************************
"Ayaan? Please come to the cafe right now!" Humaira breathed hard into her cell phone. "It's Nadeem! He's -" Humaira turned her cell phone off abruptly and smiled. She'd tried to think of other things but this was foolproof. He would never leave her in danger and as much as she hated to lie to him, she had to get him to get him to come to her somehow. She sighed, sorry, Ayaan. She took her dupatta and Ayaan's sweater off and stuffed it in her bag. Now all she had to do was wait for him.
"Apne bulaya aur hum chale aaye." Humaira felt a hand on her shoulder. Ayaan couldn't have arrived here so fast. She turned around slowly, feeling anxious.
It was Nadeem.
Humaira started breathing in deeply. Her hands clutched her bag tightly. She looked around and sure enough, Nadeem's friends had surrounded her. Think fast, think fast, think fast...But nothing was coming to her.
Nadeem slid his finger from the back of her hand to up to arms. Humaira let out a soft cry. The tears would start coming out soon. But she had to at least pretend to be strong. Nadeem was nothing more than a perverted bully.
"Ayaan will be here soon." Even when she tried to be strong, she could hear her voice crack. What if Ayaan couldn't make it?
"Maybe it's too late for that." Nadeem pulled out a small, sharp knife out of an inner pocket. He entangled his fingers with her's and used his free hand to place the blade's at her carotid. "Just get up and walk towards the car and nothing will happen to anyone." Humaira edged away from the knife but Nadeem's hands has clasped her shoulders now. Finally, a tear escaped and rolled down her cheek. Where are you, Ayaan?
Humaira got up slowly and carefully, avoiding the knife's edge touching her skin. She walked slowly to the white car that Nadeem's friends were standing beside. She felt Nadeem's hands slide down from her shoulders to her waist. She could feel his rough fingers on her bare waist. Why did she have to wear this in a public place? As they approached the car, she caught of glimpse of his dishevelled hair. He was here. It took all that it had in her but she screamed his name loud and clear.
"AYAAANNN!" She smiled. Even if Nadeem was to plunge the knife into her, she would be fine. Because Ayaan was here.
"Humaira?!" Ayaan yelled back. He saw the white car but that didn't look like Humaira to him.
"Ayaaan!" Ayaan shook his head and ran towards the car. Why wasn't Nadeem ever alone? Always with his stupid posse.
Humaira felt a liquid droplet roll down her neck and hoped it was just a bead of sweat forming. She straightened her back and tried to get her hairspray out of her bag without Nadeem noticing.
"Let her go." Ayaan was sweating all over. Humaira realized he must have been very worried for her and probably had to run to get here. She bit her bottom lip down hard in guilt.
"Get lost Ayaan. She's only lost a drop of blood so far. I will use the knife." Nadeem still sounded calm but Humaira could tell that he was getting worried now. She reached down to the bottom of her bag and felt the sharp edges of her keys. She heard a slight clank of the keys hitting something metal. It was her hairspray. Suddenly, one of Nadeem's boys kicked Ayaan from the back.
Humaira screamed his name in fury. She shook her hairspray as hard and as fast as she could. She threw the metal top off and threw it at the boy who had hit Ayaan. She shrieked into Nadeem's face and sprayed it as close to his eyes as she could. Nadeem swore loudly at her while blinking his eyes furiously. She had escaped his clutches at last.
"Ayaan!" Humaira approached Ayaan, trying to hold him up while spraying any of Nadeem's boys that came in front of her. Nadeem finally got up and started making aggressive patterns in the air with his knife, searching for Humaira. "Ayaan, get up please!"
"Humai-" Ayaan opened his eyes.
"Ayaan?! Look at me. Try to get up! Please!" Ayaan shook his head vigorously and pushed Humaira down to the ground just as Nadeem's blade hit the corner of Ayaan's mouth.
"AYAAANN!" Humaira screamed out as she saw blood on the knife's edge.
She heard the familiar siren of the police. Someone from the cafe must have called the police. She turned around to see Nadeem's friends running back to the car. Nadeem stopped for a minute to look at Humaira. She gave him a look of pure loath.

"Um...yeah, that's not happening. In case you haven't seen your abu, there's something lacking on his head. It's called hair." Ayaan seized the book back. 🤣 I completely laughed out loud at this.
Great part! I loved the whole hair thing! And all the dishum-dishum reminds me of the actual show! Humaira and Zoya might as well be sisters. One's in love with her pepper spray and the other with her hairspray!
