Woman gang-raped, dumped in south Delhi

By Raj Shekhar, TNN | Dec 27, 2012, 09.54 AM IST
NEW DELHI: A 42-year-old woman was gang-raped allegedly by three men in Uttar Pradesh who then dumped her in the Kalkaji area south-east Delhi, police said on Thursday.

The brutal incident came to light even as 23-year-old gang rape victim Nirbhaya was being flown to Singapore for treatment on Wednesday night.

As per initial information made available by sources, the victim has reportedly suffered injuries and has been taken to AIIMS Trauma Center. An official statement on the incident is awaited.

The prime accused has been identified as Dilip Verma. Three teams have been formed who are working on different leads and raiding places to arrest the culprits.

Delhi police received a call at around 9.15pm from a passerby.

The woman is a native of Jaipur, police said. She had come to Vrindavan (UP) on December 22 and was returning home on Wednesday.

On December 26, she went to Goverdhan area there where she met Verma. The accused Dilip Verma reportedly befriended the victim.

Police said she boarded a cab from Vrindavan to come to Delhi in the evening and Verma was accompanying her.

As per victim's statement, police said, that Verma's two other friends joined them on the way.

The woman was reportedly sexually assaulted by all the three men who took turns to rape her after gagging and sedating her.

They even performed the act as they drove the vehicle and took her to an undisclosed place. They later dumped her in an isolated place in Kalkaji area of south Delhi and fled.

The woman was later found by cops who were informed about her by a passerby who spotted her.

The woman was conscious and police took her to the hospital where she was offered medical help. The medical examination has confirmed rape, police said.

The cops registered a case of gang rape under section 376(G) at Kalkaji police station in southeast Delhi late night around 2am.

Senior police officers have swung into action and launched a manhunt for the accused and efforts are on to identify and trace the vehicle.

The incident has once again raised a question mark on the safety of women in Delhi.

The police really needs to come down heavily on everyone who harasses women including rapist. Most importantly society as a whole needs to shame them. Only then will such incidents reduce.

make strict rules man- this is just insane

arrest these rapists, torture them so that they pray to be dead and then hang them to death! death is a small punishment for them- they should be treated in such a way that they pray to die. Enough is enough!

No they cant...India still remains a democracy. 😆
At best they can put a temporary ban due to the law and order situation.

This is beyond unreal. What makes these people think that this is an acceptable way for them to treat women?

I back the calls for stricter punishments but IMO, increasing the severity of the punishment rapists face does nothing if no one is there to enforce it - which seems to be the biggest problem police officials have.

And really, how can anyone seriously expect a more severe punishment if the policy makers (MPs, MLAs of affluent political parties, etc) themselves hold a rap sheet with violence against women, assault, battery and murder charges? It's a f**king disgrace.

The patriarchial attitudes and the attitude to blame the woman so deeply ingrained that people dont even realize it. Here are so samples of Congress leaders inadvertently slipping:
14:08 'Freedom at midnight, doesn't mean women can go out at night': Another more appalling misogyny from a representative of the Congress party.
On Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana on Monday opened his mouth to put his foot right in, saying women are asking for trouble if they venture out at night. Worse, he described the assault on the physiotherapy student as a "minor incident" for which party president Sonia Gandhi had reached out to agitating people.

"Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark. They should ensure that they do not board buses with few passengers," Botsa said to the shock of reporters at a press conference at Congress headquarters in Hyderabad. Read more
12:59 Prez son: Protestors highly painted beautiful women: President Pranab Mukheree's son Abhijit Mukherjee who is a Congress Lok Sabha MP from his father's seat, Jangipur, has put both his feet right inside his mouth with his remarks on the anti-rape protestors in Delhi.

Speaking to the Bengali news channel ABP news, Mukherjee said, "What is happening in Delhi is like a Pink Revolution. The people who are on the streets have no idea of what the ground reality is. Walking on the roads of India with candles, going to discotheques...

"We have also been students, we have also led the life of students. We know what the character of students should be.

"Those who are on the streets saying they are students, are beautiful women "highly dented and painted", those giving interviews on TV, as if they are there to show off to their children etc. Are they really students, I have my doubts. Because women of that age are not students, generally."
13:03 Abhijit Mukherjee set to trend on Twitter for those remarks...

Shiv Aroor: Dear Abhijeet Mukherjee, W*F does 'dented' mean? Please clarify and give the soundbite again. Sincerely.

Suhel Seth: Pranab Mukherjee should hide his son in one of the many rooms in Rashtrpati Bhavan. He is capable of collateral damage!
13:17 Abhijit Mukherjee: Women students have to look a certain way: Abhijit Mukherjee's take on the anti-rape protestors to ABP News. Watch

Mukherjee attempts to clarify to CNN IBN. He says he was misquoted. "I was talking about students only. The person I was talking about was at least 35 years old, she was not a student. Whom I saw, giving an interview on TV, my comment is based on that. I was asked about whether it was a student movement. She was not a student. She was not young. But if I have hurt anyone, I apologise." (Quoted verbatim)

He insists his comment was only that it was not a student movement. "Professionals dress a certain way, students dress a certain way. They were not students. A student does not go for make-up," he says for good measure.

"Go to the Calcutta university campus or the Delhi university campus or Jadavpur campus (in Kolkata) and you will know what I mean. I have certain ideas, I have seen how students look," he says. "Why you dragging from one question to another. No more. no more," he tells CNN IBN's Sagorika Ghosh.
13:36 MP Abhijeet Mukherjee withdraws the statement 'dented, painted women', but refuses to apologise for his remarks.
And yes, he still hasn't explained what exactly 'dented' means.
13:20 Abhijeet Mukheree made it worse for himself by telling Sagarika Ghose that "professional people wear make-up and go to work and students don't wear make-up." That's a member of Parliament from West Bengal's Jangipur, who also happens to be President Pranab Mukherjee's son.
13:55 Prez daughter: Abhijeet's statement shocking!: Sharmishtha Mukherjee, President Pranab Mukherjee's daughter, speaking to CNN IBN, says she is shocked at what Abhijeet said. "Any sensitive man should not have made this statement. It shows a shocking degree of of insensitivity. My father would be so embarrassed; I haven't spoken to him about this, but I know my father. I know I am embarrassed and shocked. I can hardly believe he made such a statement.
"Whether my father is the president or not, he has a daughter and he would be disappointed like I am. I humbly apologise on his behalf. Abhijeet should unconditionally apologise."

They won't do anything! They'll blame the victim for befriending the rapist and inviting the rape upon herself. And dismiss rape as a routine happening!

I tell you reportage of rape or other crimes never instills fear in perpetrators! It only encourages them to think they can do anything and get away with it!

What to talk of victims? They bark even against protestors calling them dented, painted beautiful women who have no idea of reality and hold candles in protest because it's fashionable for them to do so! Take a bow Indian politicians!

I read this piece and I was so shocked...

I am so so so disgusted by the statements made!! they are callous and reek of indifference!

This man is obviously educated and yet the chauvinism in his statements is evident!! Even if a 35 year old lady did protest-I don't see what is wrong in that- even if a 70 year old man is protesting it is ok. Because those people are raising their voice against a cause and last I checked there are no requirements which exist to be able to participate!!

I honestly hope that this doesn't die down like the anna movement did!

And I pray that the girl recovers soon!!
