heyy

Well, a few days back at dinner my family started talking and my dad made the comment that one day I should read the Bhagavad Gita. And though i have read excerpts of it, I never really read the whole thing.

But i do wonder.. will it still be relevant?

It was advice that Lord Krishna gave Arjuna while driving his chariot thousands of years ago. How relevant are they at this time? Things have changed. We have technology, new problems, different approaches etc.

Lets not limit it to the Bhagavad Gita. The Bible. The 10 commandments and all the advice. Are they still relevant?

I'm not saying they are useless or anything. I'm simply posing this question. I do not mean to offend the Hindus, Christians or anyone else.

Sneha.. i think its more of the "Moral Teachings" every religion gives regardless of the events they propose. Morality and its definations are prevelent all the time.. infact i remember writing that "We are ought to come back to our basic morals, ethics, good deeds,etc..it is human nature"..it is a circle.

Will write more.. gonna go 😳

yes times have changed. But some things may seem different on the surface, but are actually very alike in real. The religious teachings dont always work, but at times they do-so one should follow them as best as they can; leaving room for mistakes and improvisations.

How relevant is History... Yet we still learn from it...
The thoughts in Bhagawad Gita can be interpreted in many ways and each of them may be appropriate in today s world...
We may live in a different world but our senses, desires and emotions are the same...

I suggest you read Gita Today by Dr Krishna Bhatta. He uses current events and entities in applying teachings of Gita.

Sneha!!!
Good Topic!!!
Mahabharata,Ramayana are great epics.Bhaghavad Gita is a part of Mahabharata. So I really don't know if all the things happened in it are real. The teachings in Gita are applicable to any person of any age.Its not an ordinary book to understand after reading it once. Each time we read Gita we understand better and in a different manner. So also Holy Quran and Holy Bible.See in Bible we have the prayer "Our father in heaven holy be your name.......Give us today our daily bread....".In this we ask God to give some bread,so people who eat rice, roti need not modify the prayer from bread to rice or roti,so the main thing is food.Similarly, the teachings in our scriptures are relavant to any age.

I think we can still relate out hollybooks and teaching to some extend. Like in Geeta all things that Shri Krishan said to Arujuna can be put in today's life. Even all things that happend back then (real or myth who knows) like brother fighting with step brothers, family fights, pre-maritial kid (karna- Kunti's son) and lot of other things you can still see in today's world and can relate more or less to your life. Also, main message about Krishna saying take side of truth and don't think that you are fighting with your family...think that you are fighting against evil is the similar message they show in "rang de basanti" when one of the guy kill his father who was politician. So i would say Yes, it is still relevant.

These books are relevant to a certain extent, but its relevance depends upon individual views. At my age i think reading holy books is boring, but maybe there will be a time when i turn to them for connecting with indian values and ethos and culture.

and the times maybe different but traits like truthfulness, hardwork, wit, fixed aim etc etc are still as relevant today as they were then, its we who can actually make use of these teachings.

Certain treasures of knowledge are timeless. The ones mentioned in this thread belong to that category. In fact, they are so meaningful and deep, that as you age and become experienced, newer realms of knowledge will unfold in the same ageless wonders.
