There are only some stars who gain such a quality where they become such a phenomenon to the extent that everything that they touch turns into gold. Rarely is there a star who has such power to keep the audience glued to his every dialogue, every scene, every song, every little thing he does on screen. There is a star like that today. A superstar. The All-India phenomenon known as Salman Khan.
Salman Khan had perhaps the most miraculous turn-around in his career ever seen. After his very successful 80's and 90's where he delievered many big hits (especially the All Time Blockbusters MAINE PYAR KIYA and HUM AAPKE HAI KAUN), it was in the 2000s when his career graph started going down. He was giving many flop films, and even those that were successful were far and few in between.
I sometimes feel as if it is the Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan personal hatred between the two that made Salman Khan want to be the number one guy in Bollywood (SRK comfortably used to have the number one spot for many years). Because, why is it that a year after their fight in 2008, Salman Khan had the super-successful WANTED a year later in 2009? That was only the beginning though. 2010 onwards, he started giving one All Time Blockbuster after another. DABANNG, READY, BODYGUARD, and EK THA TIGER.
Now, comes Salman's next release, DABANNG 2, the sequel to the immesnsly popular DABANNG. Salman's Chulbul Pandey character became so popular, which is another why the sequel is being eagerly awaited by all.
The big question everyone has been wondering is, will DABANNG 2 cross the lifetime record collections of 3 IDIOTS? Well, the thing is, in order for DABANNG 2 to do that, it needs to have a fantastic word of mouth. How will the word of mouth be for DABANNG 2, is the question.
There are some things I want to say related to what the film's word of mouth might be:
On one hand, it is the DABANNG franchise, and director Arbaaz Khan knows a lot about this franchise as he was apart of the first one as well. So, surely, he probably had the experience to know how to handle DABANNG 2, and it will show on screen. Also, one of the reasons why DABANNG was so popular was because of Salman Khan's acting as Chulbul Pandey, which was loved by many. Through the promos, it seems Salman has gotten back into his Chulbul form, and in that case, the audience will likely give huge appreciation to him again. Also, since Salman Khan is the man of this franchise, he probably have his inputs to Arbaaz Khan and knows what the audience wants. Also, Prakash Raj is the villian in this film, and we all know about the chemistry he had with Salman Khan when they were last seen confronting eachother in the super-sucessful WANTED.
On the other hand, this is Arbaaz's first film as a director, and no one knows for sure how his direction is. Another thing I would like to point out is what I call "the curse of the event film". Let me explain. Since BODYGUARD , every event film (including BODYGUARD) has met with mixed reactions of some sort from the public. Be it BODYGUARD (mixed word of mouth, leaning more towards positive though), RA ONE (negative word of mouth), AGNEEPATH (mixed leaning towards positive Word of mouth), EK THA TIGER (decent word of mouth) or JAB TAK HAI JAAN (mixed word of mouth). Basically, all these major event films had huge expectations from the public, but the word of mouth was not great/not up to the mark for any of them! DABANNG 2 is the next event film, and it will be interesting to see if the curse strikes again or not.
On a related note, it has been seen over the past month that the last few major films (JAB TAK HAI JAAN, TALAASH, and KHILADI 786) did not meet their expectations, according to the public/box office. After KHILADI 786, there have been those that feel that perhaps the film didn't work too well because the audience is tired of seeing masala films. Whether that is true or not, will be seen with DABANNG 2. Also, whether DABANNG 2 follows the same path as the biggies mentioned in this paragraph (in terms of not living upto expectations), or it doesn't follow their path, is also something to see.
The music of DABANNG 2 seems to have caught on, but perhaps not in the same way as DABAANG's music did.
Now, for the box office of the film.
I am sure, that DABANNG 2 will shatter non-holiday records, specifically the record for non-holiday opening day, and non-holiday opening weekend. It will be huge. Beyond that, the film has no competition for quite a few weeks, which will definitely benefit DABANNG 2, especially if the word of mouth is positive (likely, especially amongst the masses).
My Box Office Predictions for DABANNG 2:
Opening Day Collections: 20 crores net
Opening Weekend Collections: 63 crores net
Lifetime Collections:180+ crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: All Time Blockbuster
First 2010. Then 2011. Now, yet another year which will be remembered as the year of Salman Khan: 2012!
Also, I would like to say, Salman Khan is truly DABANNG (fearless) for releasing DABANNG 2 on the day the world is supposed to end (Friday, December 21, 2012) 😆
