PART 7

Blood was beginning to pour from the wound, pooling on the grass. I stood there, in shock. What the hell had they done? What did they do...?

"Stand up, Maan," I said, my voice coming out all cold and detached. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't be. He was fine. Of course he was fine.

If he died...I think I might die a little as well.

But why did I care? Why the hell do I care so much?

I collapsed at his side.

"Get up, Maan." This time, my voice broke right in the middle of his name. He was dead, wasn't he? He was gone.

I was gone as well. My body was empty, hollow, soulless. This is what Juliet felt when Romeo died, wasn't it? Pure nothing. Everything was over. It was the end. I closed my eyes, trying to stop the tears that would come

But it hurt so much, my tears wouldn't even flow. Crying right now would be too clichd. Too...unexpressive. It didn't show how much right now, I actually hurt. How right now, I was cold. How right now, there was nothing left in this world apart from me and his dead, empty body -

"Get off my hand. You're kneeling on my hand."

I opened one of my eyes. Oh. He was still alive. That was nice.

"Couldn't you even cry for me, just a little? I mean, I could've been dead," Maan said, wincing as he pushed himself up. "Damn, they got my shoulder."

His shoulder. His f**king shoulder. I started to laugh, and tears did come to my eyes.

"Why are you laughing?" he said, frowning. "It's not funny. My arm hurts."

I clutched my stomach, still laughing.

"Hold you hands up in the air!"

Oh crap. I'd forgotten about the cops.

"You still got the gun?" I whispered.

"Yeah," he replied, still looking kind of disgruntled at the fact I didn't crying over his "death".

"Let's go with Plan A again."

"What was it again?"

"Use my body as a shield for bullet, while also holding a gun against my head and threatening to shoot my brains out."

"Oh. That one."

"Let's go."

***

?Maan's monologue...?

"Put your guns down, or I'll shoot her!"

The cops were obviously amateurs, who were only here to get the reward money. They were probably the type of cop who gave out speeding tickets. The bullets the idiots shot at me were probably the first bullets they'd shot in their life.

"Calm down," one of the cops said. There were five of them, not including the one we'd knocked out. "We don't mean any trouble."

"You tried to kill me!"

"That was for a laugh!" the guy tried. "We weren't aiming for you, we swear."

"Just drop the gun." I had a headache, and every word was killing me. The cops complied, and dropped their weapons.

I walked towards them, slowly. My vision blurred and my temple pounded.

"What are you doing?" Geet hissed. "Keep walking!"

I forcing myself to carry on, blinking to try and clear my hazy vision. Concentrate, Maan.

"Gather up the weapons," I ordered Geet. The cops all watched her, and she knelt down slowly and, fumbling, picked up the guns from the grass. "Now follow me."

"What are we going to do?" she whispered.

"How many years d'you reckon stealing a cop car might get me?"

***

{Geet's monologue...}

"You realize you could've just left me, and gone with the police," Maan said, arching an eyebrow.

"I couldn't leave you," I laughed. I was driving. Apparently, he knew a place where he could get his bullet wound looked at.

"After all, we're all in this tog-"

"Don't do the song. Please don't do the song."

"It's true though. We're all in this together, once we know, that we are -"

"All in this together, my butt. You laughed when I got shot."

"Well, it was a very funny situation."

"No, it wasn't. I got shot."

"You're 'dead' face is really hilarious."

He glared at me.

"I think I'd be a little happier if you cared just a little."

"I'll be a little happier if I wasn't currently being extorted, but we can't always get what we want."

"Like this is extortion anymore," Josh snorted. "I'm not even driving. You are literally driving your kidnapper to a hospital." There was silence for a minute. "Why didn't you cry when you thought I was dead?"

I shrugged.

"It just wasn't very sad."

I'll never let him know how scared I was for him. I won't let him know how much I wanted to squeeze into a little ball, and cry. I will not let him know I care.

This was just extortion. It didn't mean anything.

***

?Maan's monologue...?

"You can't carry on like this," Geet said, staring at my wound worriedly. "We can't keep on driving. You're losing way too much blood."

I'd wrapped the bullet wound with my jacket, but she was right. My head was all woozy, and I felt pretty faint.

"No," I said. It didn't even sound like my voice. It was strangely detached from my body. Was this an out-of-body experience? "I don't want to."

"You're not going to last much longer."

She looked strangely cute, even though her forehead was all wrinkly, and her eyes were wide.

"Why do you care?"

"Of course I care!"

"I didn't ask did you care. That was obvious. I asked why?"

She shut up, and bit down on her lip hard. For a moment, there was nothing but the sound of the engine humming as she drove.

"We should just go to a normal hospital."

"No!" I yelled. "You're just going to leave me there, aren't you? You want to escape!"

Geet looked at me.

"If I really wanted to escape, I would have done it when the cops almost caught you. Josh, you aren't thinking straight. You've lost so much blood. We have to get to a hospital now."

Her voice was so calm, so normal, it annoyed me like hell. How could she stay like that all the time, behind that stupid mask of hers? I wish she could act like a human being for once, and just -

She's right. I'm not thinking straight. I'm being paranoid.

"Alright," I muttered, my voice very faint. "Let's go." And then the world turned black.

***

My eyes opened, very slowly. The ceiling was pure white.

I was lying in a hospital bed, with about a hundred needles stuck in random places. Machines bleeped next to me, and screens flickered.

Then head turned, and I was facing Geet.

If I wasn't incredibly ill, I would've screamed. She looked...awful.

Her hair was messed up, her eyes were red, and her clothes were...disgusting.

"Don't they have showers here?" I croaked, then suddenly realizing my throat was incredibly parched.

She looked up at me, and her whole face lit up. Even though she was a mess, somehow she was still prettier than any other girl I'd met.

No. That's wrong. Stop thinking like that.

She passed me the water (how did she know I was thirsty?), and smiled.

"They have showers. This is just my disguise."

"Oh, I get it. Creepy homeless lady."

"Yep," she said, proudly.

"You play the part very well."

She scowled, and playfully punched me, but it still hurt.

"I'm a patient, Geet."

She grinned.

"So?"

I glared at her.

"I'm kidding! You don't have to go all stroppy teenage girl on me!"

"You are a horrible person."

She laughed.

"No, really. You are a horrible person who didn't even cry when their friend was shot."

She raised her eyebrows.

"We're friends?"

"Aren't we?"

***

PRECAP~~~ "Hello, Mr. SQUIGLE, are you reaady for your meds now?" Nurse asked.

"Yes" He glared at her. "Mr. SQUIGLE?"
