It may be the way of people in India but should not be the way of a muslim - Islam requires a dowry to be given my the groom to the bride and that too not an exorbitant amount - the amount would equate to atleast +-5000 rupees (even less if I am not mistaken) . Unfortunately innovations by the ignorant has made it a common practice .

Dowry is clearly not allowed in Islam. I guess this system came from any other religion.

I find the concept of dowry a little confusing. I know in some Muslim communities, the dowry is given from the groom's family to the bride's family. In some other communities dowry is given from the bride's family to the groom's family.
My family comes from Pakistan and as mentioned in a previous comment, I've always been told that a dowry is a gift from the groom to his bride and the bride can do whatever she pleases with her dowry.

That is what I thought too. I attended wedding last year and there was something else that was very surprising that Groom's family had to pay for 100% of the wedding bills. Bride's family didn't pay for anything.

Dowry is not allowed in Islam...but yeah if bride's parents want to gift something to their daughter then they can but it is not dowry!!

In Islam, groom has to give "Mahr"(it can be anything like money, jewelry,a piece of land, etc) to the bride!!
