If you notice the deep reverent sighs of his when he sees her and averts his eyes shyly...you know he fell in love in that moment. That's why everything Zoya does hits so close to home for him. He searches for her at home when she's not around. He's in a can't live with her, can't live without her situation already.
Zoya on the other hand, is attracted to him only after moving into his home. She thinks he's attractive, physically. He's also a homebody which she is learning slowly. Now she's into him. She likes pushing his buttons and flirting with him because it is so easy for her to ruffle his feathers. Whereas, she can't be bothered with the creep that is Ayaan. He's too young and never crosses her mind.
Ayaan on the other hand, not really into Zoya. Got infatuated in the first meeting but lost it right as she voiced her opinion of him. He can't love her. The pair is already made with mutual attraction before he comes around.
That is my theory. What do you think?
I have to disagree with the people saying the first meeting was just attraction for Asad. Firstly though, thank you! I love how we are discussing our interpretations of the show. Now...my argument...Gul's shows are very layered at the beginning. I have seen the scene many times and noticed that Asad gets teary when he sees Zoya at the mazar and then there is the kalma tere name ka song in the background. His expression is says, there she is! I have found her! That is what I think of as love at first sight. It is not fully realized love but it is not just attraction either.
I think Asad looses the first love feeling as soon as she fights with him and tells him that men here just stare at her. It embarrasses him and he forgets about the feelings he just felt. It simmers down to just attraction which is where they are now.
Let's continue this discussion, I am liking this. It is so important that this show does well. A Muslim social rarely lasts more than 3 months in India, I hope this breaks all records and shows the open-mindedness of the Indian audience.
