Part 5
Priya made sure none the turmoil of what happened earlier was visible on her face before going back to the conference room to resume her work. Everyone looked at her with varying expressions as she walked in to take her seat.
"Priya good you are here," Sameer stated then pointed to file on the table, "Shree and Chottu found one common link between Kanak Mehta and Sweta Tiwari, take a look."
Priya picked up the file to read and sat up straighter when she read the first line on the paper. "Fortis Hospital?" Priya asked.
"Yes," Shree replied, "both women visited the hospital around the same time at the beginning of the month. I checked back for the last couple of months and found that both women has had regular visits to the hospital for last few months."
Priya was wondering if she should say something to Sameer now or wait to see if they could find more clues regarding the victims' visits to the hospital. She is sure they would have to visit the hospital to dig deeper but would Sameer go to the hospital himself to investigate and what are the chances of him and Swati running into each other at a big hospital?
"Priya are you with us?" Rathore asked to get her attention. Priya snapped out of her thoughts to see Sameer, Chottu and Shree look at her in concern while Arjun was observing her closely. "I am sorry Sameer, what did you say?"
"Shree is looking for more information to see what they were being treated for and if they were seeing the same doctor." Sameer wondered if Priya was still worried about the phone call earlier regarding Sikandar. "Is everything okay Priya?"
"Yeah everything is okay Sameer." She smiled but it looked unconvincing to Sameer and Arjun who was watching her closely.
Arjun wondered what Priya was up to now. She had looked bit worried when she read the file and now she also looked tensed. "Why do you care Arjun if she looks worried or tensed?" I don't but if it affects the case then they all needed to know Arjun replied back to his inner voice. Arjun cursed himself under his breath when he realized that he was having a silent conversation with himself.
Why his protective instincts always came out when it comes to Priya, is a mystery that he has been unable to solve since the first moment he had seen her at the academy.
Five years ago, Maharashtra Police Academy, Nashik
Arjun Suryakant Raute leaned against the wall with his arms across his chest as he waited for his best friend Sameer Rathore to finish shooting his target. They had been in the shooting range for past half hour trying to best each other's scores but it was a futile attempt to see who was a better shot since they were both good.
They both had a competitive streak that is mile wide and they were both too stubborn to give up on what they set their minds on, which is what made them the best at what they do. Only difference between the two is that Arjun is quicker to grasp facts to see beyond the obvious while Sameer only sees the obvious and is quick to jump to conclusion. The two men are opposite of each other but remained best friends despite the differences between them.
Arjun was about to comment on Sameer's shooting when he heard a commotion at the entrance of the shooting range, he frowned but didn't worry until he heard one of the male officers say something about a female trainee that made his blood boil. He instantly turned to walk toward the entrance when he recognized the male officer's voice.
He halted few feet from the five men gathered around a female trainee in black yoga pants and pink t-shirt. Her long dark hair was tied in a ponytail, she had on a small stud earring in her ear but no other jewelry was visible on her perfectly toned body. She was about five feet five inches tall and slender but not skinny. Her stance was relaxed as the men around her threw more insults at her for wanting to be a police officer instead of learning to be a good housewife.
Arjun glanced at her face and was startled to see her face completely devoid of any expressions. He thought he would at least see fear or agitation but nothing was visible until he moved closer and looked into her hazel eyes. Her eyes were speaking volumes, he saw the rage building slowly and knew that her relaxed pose and expressionless face was a front and if the idiot standing in front of her didn't shut his trap soon he is going to see exactly what the woman was made of and he also knew that if the woman reacted in the wrong way she will be in for a very long and stressful training.
Arjun was about to take a step forward when she flickered a glance his way that made him stop where he was, she further surprised him by smiling at the man who was insulting her.
"Are you finished officer Shukla?" She asked with such a sweet voice that it made Arjun wait with bated breath to see what she was about to do.
"I will tell you what Officer Shukla," she continued in her sweet voice, "let's see if I have what it takes to be a police officer before confining me to the kitchen and be trained to be a great housewife."
Arjun was impressed by her confident tone and the way she openly challenged Shukla. Shukla was about to get a taste of his own medicine.
"How do you plan to prove yourself Ms. Banerjee?" Shukla asked making Arjun aware that the two had already met and disliked each other from the start.
The young woman glanced at the shooting range then back at Shukla. "We will both shoot a target one time, six bullets and see who is the best shot and deserves to be here." Her smile grew wider when Shukla looked interested then she went in for the kill. "If I win then you have to promise to never insult me or any other female trainee again and if you win I will quit and go back to where I came from." Arjun frowned at that but waited to see the result of this very interesting challenge.
Shukla and his friends started laughing but the woman only waited for him to accept or decline the challenge. Finally when Shukla failed to get any reaction out of her he grabbed a gun and started loading it. "Prepare to go back to where you came from Ms. Banerjee." He said with arrogance but still she didn't react.
Shukla shot the target with the six bullets then smirked at the woman. Arjun had to admit he was good, two of his shots had hit dead center while the other four were very close to the center.
Arjun held his breath as he waited for Ms. Banerjee to finish shooting then grinned when he saw that all of her six shots were dead center. Arjun saw the woman move close to Shukla and speak in a firm tone.
"Never ever underestimate what a woman can do Mr. Shukla, most especially me. I will trust you to keep your part of the bargain and keep your insults to yourself about the female officers from now on." She stepped back and looked at the other four men daring them to take her on.
Shukla gave her a venomous look before stomping out of the shooting range; the other four men followed him without saying a word.
"You handled that very well but you know he is not going to stop harassing you despite the fact that you won the challenge." Arjun said as he moved towards her. He extended his hand to her as he introduced himself to her, "I am Arjun Raute by the way."
He saw her hesitate before placing her hand in his, "Priya Banerjee," she removed her hand as soon as she finished saying her name. "Yes I know that he won't stop but he will think twice before insulting me again." She looked around the deserted shooting range then back to him. "Anyway it was nice to meet you officer Raute, see you around." She walked away from him before he could say another word leaving Arjun baffled by her haste to leave his company.
Present
Arjun pushed the memories of the past out of his head and focused on the present and the ongoing case. He didn't know what was happening to him but ever since Priya had walked into the office that morning he was being bombarded with the past memories that he did not want to remember. He didn't know what was an illusion and what was reality anymore.
He didn't know which Priya Banerjee is real, the one he met at the academy five years ago or the one he learned about after he met and married Roshni. He didn't even think he cared to know but if he wanted to catch Sikandar then he needed to learn all he could about Priya and her undercover assignment, just how close did she get to Sikandar and his dealings?
Arjun decided to think about the past later and concentrate on the case for now. Priya is here to stay so he will have plenty of time to unearth what happened in the past. "Shree did you find anything on the victim's visit's to the hospital?"
"No sir, nothing yet, I have looked through both of the victims records but didn't find any medical reports or any information on why they were visiting the hospital regularly. According to the bills found in their files it only states that they were treated but for what condition they were treated for is not on the bills." Shree told Arjun.
"Was Kanak an investigative reporter? Priya asked.
"Yes," Sameer answered, "she was an investigative reporter for a weekly magazine as matter of fact. Why do you ask Priya?"
"Could she have stumbled up on something on one of her visits that could get her noticed by the killer?" Priya asked.
"But Kanak was killed after Mrs. Tiwari and how would Mrs. Tiwari be connected to this?" Arjun asked.
"It was just a thought, we can't say anything until we know more about why these two women visited the hospital and if they had something in common that caught the attention of the killer." Priya said absently.
"Okay so we go to the hospital and see if we can get some new information from there on both women and their conditions then we can see if they had anything in common that got them killed exactly the same way." Sameer instructed the team.
Arjun and Sameer were first out the door as usual. "Gods of luck are not with me today." Priya muttered under her breath but Chottu and Shree both heard her and gave her an inquiring look.
Priya saw their look and sighed deeply. "I have to be the most unlucky person in the world guys, I finally get a chance to work with my two good friends, but one hates me and the other is going to be very unhappy with me in short while."
Shree patted her shoulder, "This is just the first day on the job for you and I am not sure how your two friends were in the past, but the way they are now, you might as well get used to days like this from now on."
"Shree is right Priya, you haven't seen them butt heads with each other yet, wait until Arjun sir tries to prove Rathore sir wrong." Chottu added.
Priya's eyes widened in surprise, "Are you serious?" She asked.
Chottu and Shree both nodded their heads in yes, "They have been worse since Riya's death." Shree said with sadness.
Priya gave them sympathetic look, "And you two have had to deal with two stubborn and hotheaded idiots by yourselves." Priya said, "but don't worry most of their focus will be on me now." She smiled at them in reassurance.
The relief on Shree and Chottu's face made Priya laugh and before they could feel bad she started walking towards the door. "Let's hurry up or we will all get lectured about work and wasting time by your samjahe ya samjhau sir."
Shree and Chottu caught up with her quickly, "So Arjun sir has been using that line since before he joined ETF." Chottu said to Priya.
"Yeah he used to say it all the time, but he used to say it as a joke but I doubt that he even smiles anymore." Priya said with a faraway look on her face.
"He did for a while but since Riya's death he hardly relaxes, he just cares about the work; he doesn't care that a very close member of our team is gone forever." Shree said with tinge of anger in his tone.
Priya stopped and turned to Shree she then placed her hand on his shoulder to make him look at her. "I am sure he cares Shree but Arjun has been through so much in the past three years that he has withdrawn from everyone. He doesn't show how he feels so easily anymore but I am sure that he is also missing Riya, he just prefers to keep it to himself."
Shree thought about what Priya said while they were on their way to the hospital. Some things about Arjun sir and his behavior with Riya were starting to make sense to him now as he observed the way he is with Priya. He had a feeling Arjun sir's soft corner for Riya may have had lot to do with Priya and his friendship with her. He wondered what made Arjun sir cut all ties with Priya to extent of hating her. He decided to talk to Chottu at the first opportunity and see if his thoughts on Arjun sir were same.
For two hours ETF team roamed the hospital trying to get as much information as they could on Kanak and Mrs. Tiwari but nothing obvious was found to link them together. Priya thought she had dodged the bullet by not running into Swati as she and Sameer made their way to the exit door, but just as they rounded the corner she saw her friend walking towards them. Before she could say anything to Sameer he also saw Swati and stopped in his tracks.
Swati was still preoccupied with thoughts on her last patient so she didn't notice the two people at the end of the hall until she was right in front of them. It took her a moment to realize that Sameer Rathore was standing in front of her. She recovered quicker than Sameer and schooled her features so none of her true feelings were visible to the man she had loved, still loves, more than her own life.
Swati ignored Sameer's presence and turned to look at Priya but before she could say anything she saw Arjun Raute join them. She was shocked to see how different Arjun looked from the one she had met long time ago. He looked right through her as if he didn't know her, his eyes were devoid of any emotions and they looked blank and cold.
Swati turned to Priya again and noted that the day hasn't been easy on her at all; She stepped close to Priya and hugged her impulsively and wasn't surprised when Priya hugged her back. They had always known when the other needed a comforting hug without saying anything. Swati stepped back, "You knew it wasn't going to be easy so I am not going to ask how your day is going. Call me when you get home and we can talk about your first day with the ETF in Mumbai." She said with a smile.
Swati finally turned to Sameer, "How are you Sameer?"
Sameer couldn't believe how indifferent Swati was being towards him. She acted as though they were nothing more than acquaintances. In all honesty he couldn't blame her for distancing herself from him. He was the one who had broken their relationship because of his own distrust in institute of marriage. "I am fine Swati; I didn't know you are living in Mumbai now."
Swati shrugged her shoulders. "I have been here for past two years now."
Arjun was surprised to see the tension between Swati and Sameer. They were both acting normal but Arjun didn't miss the flicker of pain in Swati's eyes that she was trying to hide and Sameer's expressions were telling their own story. He realized that at some point in the past Sameer and Swati had a relationship and wondered how Priya felt about this. He turned slightly to look at Priya but to his surprise she was looking at Swati and Sameer with amusement mixed with exasperation.
Arjun found himself thinking about the past again and quickly shook the thoughts out of his head. What did he care if Priya was not affected by Sameer and Swati's relationship? A fleeting memory flashed through his mind and he stopped to glance back to Sameer, Swati, and Priya and that's when he realized that Priya had always been comfortable with Sameer but she had never looked at him as if she had been in love with him. Could he have been wrong about Priya's feelings for Sameer? And if she had loved him then wouldn't Swati have known about it? He knew Swati and Priya were more like sisters than friends and he was also sure that Swati would never hurt Priya intentionally so that meant that Priya had always looked at Sameer as a friend and not as a man she loved.
Priya felt slightly guilty for not warning Sameer about Swati but deep down she had hoped that Sameer would stop running from Swati and had counted on element of surprise to work in Swati's favor but judging by the silence between them she didn't think things would ever work for her friends. She decided to give them the privacy they needed to talk. She walked away silently but stopped when she saw Arjun looking at Sameer and Swati intently. He looked puzzled and surprised at the same time. He glanced at her but she looked away and kept walking towards the exit.
Meanwhile Sameer's mouth had gone dry as he stared at Swati, she is still beautiful as ever; nothing about her has changed except for the defeated look in her dark brown eyes. The vulnerability he saw in her eyes made him want to forget everything and gather her petite form in his arms and never let go but he just couldn't take that last step towards her. His fear and distrust always made him hold back every time and that only killed the hope and dreams in her eyes.
Sameer finally gathered courage to speak, "How are you Swati?"
Swati clenched her teeth to keep from blasting the idiot man standing in front of her. "How does he think she would be after he broke her heart and their engagement few weeks before they were to get married?"
"I am surviving Sameer and that is more than enough." She finally said carelessly.
Sameer frowned, "How is your mother?"
Swati blinked back the tears that came to her eyes at the mention of her mother, "She passed away two years ago."
Sameer felt her words hit his heart like arrows and instantly took a step toward her but stopped when she stepped back from him. "I don't want your sympathy Sameer, it is too late for that; nothing can bring her back." Swati turned to walk away but turned back to Sameer. "Sameer if you ever felt anything for me then just do one thing for me please."
"Anything you want Swati." Sameer instantly promised.
"Just look out for Priya, she will never say anything or show any of her feelings but she is not as strong as she looks. She was completely broken from the inside with what happened; you and I may have helped her mend but nothing or no one can bring back what she lost that day." Swati waited for him to acknowledge her words then walked away.
Sameer felt helpless as he watched Swati walk away. He still couldn't bring himself to stop her and tell her that he would make everything alright between them because he still thought that marriage for police officers were doomed to fail. He couldn't give in to his feelings for Swati now only to see the love in her eyes turn to hate after being married to him for few years. He would rather have a broken heart than a broken marriage.
Sameer walked towards the exit unaware that the man standing few feet away from where Sameer was earlier heard the last part of his and Swati's conversation.
